My Grand Illusion - The Mighty Pink Flamingo
2 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone! My name is Ivy and although I am new to this posting stuff, I am not new to the Quilting Board. I am confessing to being a Lurker. I Love this Quilting Board! I look forward to my 20 minutes each and every day. Y'all are a talented bunch and I have learned lots from each of you. I have only been quilting the past 6-7 years although I have always loved looking at quilts. I did not come from a family of quilters or seamstresses.
I love doing the Bonnie Hunter mysteries. Not only are they exciting but after making the same block/component over and over then By George I've Got It! That said my first one was the Grand Illusion from 3 or 4 years ago. I have heard many talk about how they didn't like this pattern of hers but have really enjoyed subsequent ones. I mentioned on another thread that after some inspiration I tweeked this quilt to make it my own and finished it earlier this year. I had the components made but after the reveal I was ... well ... uninspired to put it together. However this spring I dug it out and my husband found a whimsical fabric in my stash and together we thought "why not?!". You see I've liked pink flamingos since before pink flamingos were "in"! Most of the rooms in my home contain a small flamingo here or there as they are good luck to me. If I can figure out how to put a few pictures on here I will show you this happy quilt. Actually just last month it won 1st Place Viewer's Choice in the quilt show at the local Library!! Isn't this our goal as quilters? To make others happy with our quilts? I even backed it with itty bitty pink flamingos on a white background. I hope this encourages many to make the quilt your own! I named this quilt The Mighty Pink Flamingo. Enjoy! |
Welcome, so glad you introduced yourself. I like your version of Bonnie's quilt.
very nicely done
Welcome to the board.
Your quilt and quilting is absolutely beautiful, colors are too. |
Wonderful fun variation! Are you going to do the new mystery?
Very vibrant - I like it!
I really like it. Welcome to the board.
Ivy, this is a beautiful quilt! You were very clever to think up this neat sashing solution. I like how the blocks don't blend together. It really sets off your cute flamingo fabric!

How fun & festive! Really like the sashing and the flamingos :) Looking forward to pics of your other BHMQs (comments from your other post on the ORL thread!) Please do share!
Welcome! I love how you added the flamingo fabric and a unique sashing to this quilt. It is wonderful!
what a beauty
You worked out a wonderful way to get your quilt finished and looking vibrant! Congrats on the win at the library! Pink flamingos are a favorite of mine, too, but they aren’t in the house. A friend and I used to joke that every house in Florida needed a pink flamingo in the yard. You have them in the house...I’m glad you enjoy them and they bring you good luck. Enjoy making quilts and welcome to the Board as a contributor.

Wow, that is pretty!

Happy birds! Happy quilt!
You did a great job making your quilt unique. I love flamingos too! |
Welcome, Ivy! That quilt is gorgeous!
Oh that's really so beautiful! I love the colors and pattern!
Love the way it turned out. I, too, was uninspired by the final project, and my pieces still linger in the dark, growing older and older. LOL

WOW Ivy...love that quilt and the colors. I have to admit I am a lurker too and love to read this board almost everyday that I have time. Sometimes I don't know what to comment on, even though I love every different post, from the pictures, recipes, little sales, trades, and even the vintage machine pictures. I go back and forth from quilting to beadweaving. Right now I am back into quilting and have been doing this for over 15 years and sewing for 47 years. Glad you posted a picture of your quilt and soon I will post some of mine. Thanks...

amazing quilt

Hello Ivy! Your addition of the flamingos, and the neat sashings really make the quilt your own! Great ideas, and congrats on the win!
Very nice!
Nice to "meet" you, Ivy. I was one of those who tried BH mystery for the first time with Grand Illusion. And like you, after the reveal, I was uninspired to keep going. It was just too busy of a pattern and I gave up. However, I like your interpretation. Setting off the blocks and fussy cutting the center and whatever else you did to it, certainly is easier on my eyes. It's delightful that you infused your personality into it with flamingos.

Awesome quilt! Welcome to the board from Arizona!
Beautiful quilt, colors are great, congrats on your win
Ivy, we’re delighted you snuck out from behind the curtains. Your quilt is spectacular, no doubt you got 1st place in viewer’s choice award. Congratulations and we hope to see more of your quilts. Are you going to participate in BH’s mystery this year? Ringo Lake...I think it’s called.
Beautiful quilt. I really like your color choices and sashing treatment. Really great quilt.
It turned out beautiful. I started it and quit!
Welcome to the board, Ivy. Your quilt is very pretty. That pink really makes the whole thing "pop".
How do you only spend 20 mintues on the board? It takes me at least an hour to work through it all. LOL |
What a happy quilt! Great job!
Those straight lines are so well done!
You've inspired me to finish my Grand Illusion...you did such a GOOD JOB on your tweak with the flamingos...welcome to the board..

How very pretty! No wonder it won the viewer's choice at the library. I bet you are so proud, I would be!
