My Grandchildrens wedding quilts!

1 Attachment(s)
Keep in mind my grands are 17, 11, & 6, we went to a friend of our sons wedding and he wanted a quilt, so I got to thinking what would I be able to do in 10 or 15 years when my grands started getting married. So I've started making their wedding quilts and putting them in a closet for when they take that step. I know I'm OCD!

Jingle 07-11-2012 05:56 PM

That is a beautiful quilt and will make a wonderful wedding gift.
Good idea to plan ahead. They will keep you busy for a while.

sew_Tracy 07-11-2012 05:57 PM

I love that and I love the idea. Great, now my family will starve and wear dirty socks while I am planning for the future!

PaperPrincess 07-11-2012 06:01 PM

Beautiful quilt!

debcavan 07-11-2012 06:06 PM

No you are very smart. And the quilt is gorgeous.

My husband's grandmother made quilts for all her grandchildren and gave them to the Mothers of the grandchildren. I met the Grandmother when we first started to date but sadly by the time we were married, she had died. My Mother in Law forgot about them. She was cleaning a closet and found them after I was married for five years. That is what got me interested in quilting. I had never ever seen a quilt. I was fascinated.

That quilt is just absolutely beautiful! And what a wonderful idea! You're not being OCD... you're staying one step ahead in the game & I admire you for it! My DD just got engaged & I wish I had her quilt already made & put in the closet... LOL!

coopah 07-11-2012 06:31 PM

Gorgeous! Thinking ahead is good. I have three finished baby quilts (one totally done by my mom, the other two the tops were done by me and Mom hand quilted them) hanging in my sewing closet just waiting for the announcement that I'll be a grandma. We never know what life might bring, so these are insurance that family quilting talents aren't forgotten.

joysewer 07-11-2012 06:39 PM

Gorgeous quilt!

Annaquilts 07-11-2012 06:52 PM

No I think it is a great idea. I am still in the midst of making quilts for my children but I have already thought about making extra baby quilts fr when I can't make any for grand children.

Diane007 07-12-2012 04:29 AM

You made an excellent point .. what can we do in 15/ 20 years.
Stock pile is always good.
Don't forgot to add college quilts to that :)

Very nice quilt

fivepaws 07-12-2012 05:14 AM

What a smart idea. I love making quilts and my husband always says "so what are you going to do with this one?" sort of takes the fun out of it. Make aheads are a wonderful idea, nothing OCD about that. That is just smart.

BeckySt 07-12-2012 06:06 AM

Love your quilt, great planning ahead. I need to learn from you. My daughter is 16 in a couple weeks and I have had the fabric for 6 months and I just got it pieced in the last couple days, now to finish the rest in time for her big day.

NIICHMOM 07-12-2012 06:09 AM

I know how you feel, I am also starting to work on Wedding quilts for my grandchildren.. Oldest to youngest grandchildren is 21,19,16,16,15,13,6,1 & expecting #9 in Oct. I started by making baby quilts, then twin size quilts, then queen size and now plan on making king size for wedding gifts. Also I am planning on making 4 king size quilts for my 4 children. I think I started at the wrong end of the list...LOL Plus I love making smaller items such as table runners, christmas gifts and etc.
So keep on sewing Alice/and I would love see all your quilts as you make them.

Lady Jane 07-12-2012 06:10 AM

A CERTAIN MAGIC
by Marcella Bechtel

Forty or more long years ago,
A lady I never knew
Lovingly pieced this quilt top,
And added the border, too.
Each curve fits in exactly,
It's made so carefully,
But she died ere she could quilt it
For her great-grandson, you see.
She made quilts for all her children,
And all their children, too;
But there wasn't time to finish
All that she meant to do.
So this lovely top was left behind
After she'd gone to rest;
It was handed down to his mother,
And stored in a cedar chest.
It stayed in perfect condition,
Though forty years it's been
Since she made it for my husband--
He was just a baby then.
Now it is stretched out before me,
And my needle moves to a tempo,
Quilting the top she made
So many years ago.
I feel as if I know her--
This lady I never met;
For the cloth holds a certain magic
Of love that is living yet.
I know it makes her happy
That at last it's being done
By someone else who loves him--
Her gift for her great-grandson.

This comment also reminds me of another poem that has been posted on this list before. Sorry I have forgotten where it came from, but enjoy!

Addicted to Quilting

She learned to quilt on Monday.
Her stitches all were very fine.
She forgot to thaw out dinner.
so we went out to dine.

She quilted miniatures on Tuesday.
she says they are a must.
They really were quite lovely.
But she forgot to dust.

On Wednesday it was a sampler.
She says stippling's fun.
What highlights! What Shadows!
But the laundry wasn't done.

Nine patches were on Thursday -
Green, yellow, blue and red.
I guess she really was engrossed;
She never made the bed.

It was wall hangings on Friday,
In colors she adores.
It never bothered her at all,
That crumbs were on the floors.

I found a maid on Saturday,
My week is now complete.
My wife can quilt the hours away;
The house will still be neat.

Well, now it's only Sunday,
I think I'm about to wilt.
I cursed, I raved, I ranted,
Cause the MAID has learned to QUILT!

Kitsie 07-12-2012 08:26 AM

Beautiful colors! A very special quilt!

laceybritt 07-12-2012 09:04 AM

Not OCD at all unless we all are lol!!! Mine are 16 & 18 so I need to borrow your idea instead of waiting until the last minute!

Kimkankwilt 07-12-2012 09:41 AM

Thanks for the reminder...one of my kids may be getting close so I should probably get started.

lollygagging 07-12-2012 10:29 AM

Well organized, not OCD! Pretty quilt. You'll be glad you did them. It will leave lots of free time to make quilts for the grands! Thanks for sharing.

Krystyna 07-12-2012 10:34 AM

The quilt is just beautiful. What a wonderful treasure for your grandchildren!
As for being OCD ... I've been collecting fabric and designs for baby quilts.
My son isn't married yet ... not for another 9 months ... but hope springs eternal that I will live to see grandbabies!

Scraps 07-12-2012 10:41 AM

Very pretty quilt! My good quilting friend is making wedding quilts for her 12 grandchildren!!! Ages 20's to 5 yrs old. She has six done and some of them had input as to the colors. That is a loving project ---- enjoy!

Rose_P 07-12-2012 11:05 AM

The quilt is a treasure! Since when is it OCD to plan ahead?

Peggy Jeanne 07-12-2012 11:18 AM

Smart lady, love the quilt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Helen S 07-12-2012 12:24 PM

It's beautiful, and I'd much rather think of you as being fully prepared! lol

redquilter 07-12-2012 12:35 PM

Beautiful and you are one smart lady. Never hurts to be prepared and look ahead.

stitcherlady 07-12-2012 12:38 PM

Wow, that is thinking ahead. Really pretty quilt.

carolaug 07-12-2012 12:50 PM

I love, love this idea...I am about to have my first grandchild any parents have 15 grandchildren and my MOM use to make incredible crochet blankets. She no longer can make them and wishes she had made more baby ones for the future great grandkids. I love you idea of wedding quilts for the future...I am going to do the same...

char634w 07-12-2012 12:51 PM

Beautiful !!!!! How are you going to keep the grands out of the closet? They may be rushing into marriage just to get such a beautiful quilt - lol. Just kidding but something to think about....

Quilt Novice 07-12-2012 12:56 PM

It looks great! Just be sure to label the quilts that you make ahead so you don't forget!

red-warrior 07-12-2012 04:00 PM

No I say smart and ambitious!

noveltyjunkie 07-12-2012 04:04 PM

This is an extension of the tradition whereby young girls would make items for the own marriage before they had even started dating. It is a good idea for time consuming projects!

I am knitting a textured cotton baby blanket for no one in particular. It is taking me so long that it might turn out to be for my grandchild- I reckon I have a bout 20 years to get it done- should be nearly enough!
