My Half Strippy Scrappy Lappy - My Own Idea! - instructions are @ post 74

:)I got all 49 blocks made in Oct. but haven't decided the alternating blocks yet. Think I will use black for that. (btw, I like to see a pic of the blocks all stacked up when finished! It's a motivator for sure!) I really loved making this quilt! I have more strips than anything else and needed a solution for all those little pieces and long strips. There's lots of movement setting it on point. Sometimes I made the whole block and then halved it in order to have a duplicate and other times I used up singles doing half the block. There's no name for this block. I haven't seen anything like it anywhere and can't wait to do another to use up more strips (as soon as I finish this one). So I just call it My Half Strippy Scrappy. The block is 5" and is 48" wide right now. It either becomes horizontal or vertical depending on which way you look at it on the bed. From the top down, it's vertical. From the sides of the bed, it becomes horizontal and resembles a kite! Oh, what fun this is! Hope you enjoy seeing it like I do! Thanks for looking!:D

Thanks everyone for your nice compliments!! Thank you lpsewing! I will show some close ups as I get this together. Just took quick pics today. There are some fun and beautiful fabrics in this quilt! This is one quilt with 2 different views! Amazing, isn't it? :)

I love using up the scraps. I do this and I do a flip and sew on muslin making blocks any size you want. The muslin can be the batting and then all you need is a backing and binding. I use up left over binding that way as well. Great work.

raedar63 01-18-2012 08:15 PM

I love this . You can't beat scraps in my book! Did you use a foundation and then slice and resew?

earthwalker 01-18-2012 08:21 PM

It's brilliant! This will be a stunner when it's done. I too love to see the blocks stack up :) as I love the quilting and binding aspect of this craft the best. Thanks so much for sharing this with us.

Marilynsue 01-18-2012 08:26 PM

That just looks like tooo much fun!

You have a GREAT idea! I've done this before but have always added the batting too as I like it heavy and puffy! ha. Never thought of letting the muslin be the batting but I'll try that some time since batting has gotten expensive. Thanks, pilgrim!:)

Yes, I did a slice and resew number but no foundation as I was using crumbs of all sizes, shapes and wanted some lopsidedness to it or a little wonky. I eyeballed the pieces I was using so I could chainsew bunches and offset each strip so that it fit my cardboard template perfect (5.5"). It worked great that way. Then slice the block in half on the diagonal in opposite corners from your strips. Resew to another 1/2 block. However, if you want your strips all perfectly spaced, cut exactly right, then I suggest using a muslin foundation if you don't want that slightly wonky look. I forgot to say when you get done with your block, place the template on top of your sewn strips and cut out the block and then slice it in half. This method will use up lots of strips and we sure get inundated with strips!

If you don't want to eyeball it, then separate your strips in 3 piles: longest, med. and short ones. Lay the strips on top of your template to make sure your base is all covered and then sew them together. Voila! It was fun and easy strip piecing these! It's a no brainer, non-thinking task. Have fun with it! :) Thank you, raedar! Great question!:)

breezyquilts 01-18-2012 09:07 PM

Great idea for using up all the extra strips, it is going to be an amazing quilt!!

cowgirlquilter 01-18-2012 09:08 PM

That is a true beauty! Looks like its was really fun to put together!

The 2nd pic turned out dark. I found 2 to give you an idea. I quickly threw these on the design wall. Will take better pics in the morning. The first pic is a good example of putting together really busy fabrics in your block; the busier, the better. Thank you, Janet!! :)

cindy4857 01-18-2012 09:33 PM

Great quilt. I really reminds me of the quilts from the 1800's early 1900. Can't wait to see it finished.

QuiltnNan 01-19-2012 04:18 AM

I love the look of the top picture. you did a great job. had you given any thought to alternating the blocks vertical and horizontal? just a thought. i think the black background blocks will work great

Chicca 01-19-2012 06:35 AM

Thanks for sharing such a great way to use up scraps. The quilt is beautiful.

Lady Jane 01-19-2012 07:42 AM

Thank you, QuiltnNan! No, I had not thought about alternating the blocks. I believe it would lose its effect if I did. All blocks vertical shows the depth and dimensions better. I did, however, rearrange the blocks to be upright and it looks awful that way. As it stands, this quilt has 2 looks. You can get both looks in the quilt by the way you view it for now. This quilt would also be very pretty done with all solids. Another good idea would be to have each block half-black and half-multi. Sometimes I see Japanese lanterns when I look at it; other times, kites. Yes, I believe the setting squares should all be black and background squares too. There are many ways to set the blocks in various positions that could be interesting! Thank you!! :)

QuiltnNan 01-19-2012 10:11 AM

you're welcome. can't wait to see a pic of the final quilt :)

MdmSew'n'Sew 01-19-2012 01:34 PM

Kewllllll!! I think the black will make it really shine. You can also turn blocks in alternating directions, see if that makes it even more interesting? Anyway you do it, it will be spectacular.

PS - Just saw that QuiltnNan had the same idea about turning the blocks ... great minds????

char634w 01-19-2012 01:49 PM

I love it, so happy. thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Mdmsew'n'sew! You're both on the same plane today! Now I want to try your's and QuiltnNan's ideas:thumbup:! Will post a pic so we can see....think I might be missing a great lay-out plan for the blocks!

Here's what it will look like alternating the blocks horiz. and vert. as suggested by QuiltnNan and MdmSew'N'Sew:

p.s. notice the block in the top right corner on the navy fabric -- it's position was changed from its position in the 2nd pic! The computer switched the position I had it in originally!!! Eeeeewww, I've never had that happen before. Comp is playing weird tricks tonight!

BETTY62 01-19-2012 09:36 PM

Very nice. Love all the colors.
