I finally found the crushed walnut shells at the pet store in the 'reptile' area ... its used as litter.

Your hens are just so adorable. Nice job. I saw these on a Georgia Bonesteel quilt program a while back and I think she said she uses her "dog-ears", the little corners she cuts off triangles, but I think I would use the plastic pellets, as they are heavy enough for a "setting" het.

Walnut hulls is the way to go. You can purchase them very cheap at pet stores. Also, I have been very happy with "clean" sand. I make sure my hens are made of close woven fabric to make sure there is no seepage/leakage of any kind.
