If you have access to crushed walnut shells, that works very well also.

I just got some crushed walnuts for pincushion filler. I got it @ Pestmart in the bird department. It is supposed to keep your pins & needles sharp . I have only been using it for a few days and so far I like it better than sand.

daughter has real chickens. A nice gift would be some pin
cushion chickens. Much easyer to deal with.

I have also seen these used as 'book weights'. Place on cookbook to hold the page open, so even if they don't use a pin cushion, they could always use a book weight.
