My Hexagon Masterpiece

1 Attachment(s)
Here it is. My masterpiece project.
I started this July 2008 and I finished the piecing last weekend. It is all hand pieced using the English Paper Piecing method. The hexagons are 1" on the flat side with the size being 95" x 112". It is larger than I expected but I love it. I designed this quilt in rounds starting with the center star, I didn't work on the next round until the previous one was complete. I used lots of hexagon graph paper and colored pencils to design this project. The papers were all hand cut from scrap computer paper. I know lots of tedious work, but I loved all of it. It may take me another 5 years to get the quilting done and since it is hand pieced it will be hand quilted - and that is my least favorite thing to do, but I will do it.
The papers are still in it at this point. I don't want to remove them until I am ready to layer it for quilting. My plan for the edge is to keep the peaks and valleys of the hexagons by using a hexagon facing method I have practiced on a small wall quilt.
Oh and for those that are curious it has 4257 pieces in it.

Masterpiece is the current term! You should post a picture of it to Bonnie Hunter over at www.quiltville.blogspot.com. She is a big fan of Hexagon PP quilts.

Your design is gorgeous! I've not seen one even similar before. You've done a wonderful job so far and I know the hand quilting will be the perfect finishing touch - even if it does take "forever"!

QuiltnMyra 10-11-2013 06:48 PM

I am in love Kathy, with your quilt. It is stunning. I am working on a half inch hexi star at the moment so I know how much work you have put into it. Are we hexi mad? Or just enjoy a challenge!

You are right, you probably have never seen one like it. I did see an antique one on the Illinois State Museum website that was made in a similar fashion.
I love doing hexis but didn't want a Grandmother's Flower Garden and this is my result. My GFG is still in a box as a UFO, and probably will remain such for a long time, I love the colors and fabrics - just not the design. Maybe I should take them apart and do something not GFG! ;0

dilyn 10-12-2013 03:53 AM

That is the most unique and beautiful hex quilt I have ever seen! I've wanted to do one for some time but didn't want the usual GFG. You have nailed the most UNIQUE way to piece it that I have ever seen....absolutely stunning!

J Carol 10-12-2013 04:06 AM

tessagin 10-12-2013 04:39 AM

stunning and love the colors! You have more patience than I!

CharlotteO 10-12-2013 04:46 AM

The patience of Job, the talent of a master quilter. That is absolutely stunning. I will revisit this often to view, because I think it is just beautiful. The talent, the patience, the design and the finish. Can't wait to see it quilted.

Jackie Spencer 10-12-2013 04:57 AM

Oh my! Your quilt is gorgeous but you are awesome! I just dont think I have what it takes to see something like this through to the finish. You must have a lot of patience. Beautiful design too! Congrats on a great finish!!

mighty 10-12-2013 07:11 AM

Wow, really nice!!!!!!!

josie bass 10-12-2013 07:17 AM

That is truly a work of art. It is beautiful, I am sure you did it by hand. I have never seen one like it and I am sure I will never again. The design and color scheme are just perfect.

tucsonquilter 10-12-2013 07:18 AM

Beautiful! I am in the process of making a hexie quilt diamond shaped. It is a long process but I also enjoy it.

DebraK 10-12-2013 07:26 AM

The hand quilting sounds like penance. Beautiful quilt. It deserves no less. Look forward to seeing it again in 5 years ;-)

Sheilz 10-12-2013 07:39 AM

It is beautiful! You must have an awful lot of patience and determination to complete such a large quilt by hand. I struggle to hand sew binding never mind a whole quilt! Congrats on such an amazing achievement

fred singer 10-12-2013 07:55 AM

wow amazing quilt

Vivian Ketron 10-12-2013 07:58 AM
