If you remember, these hexagons were given to me by my boss. She and her mom cut them out in the 1970's. This was supposed to be her one year aniversary gift, but Mom never made it. Anyway, I was asked to put it together for a Mother's Day gift without being given a pattern. My first few tries were a disaster. This is the 2nd pattern.
It still needs borders, but at least I'm finished with the hexagons. I have such respect for those of you who piece with hexagons. This was really difficult for me. So... borders... I was thinking brown and then red??? top without borders |
WOW! You worked really hard on this! Nice!!!!
WOW  GREAT Job  Love the way you put the colors  They owe you big time
Nightmare or not, it looks like it came together well!
And such courage to take on something without a pattern... Good job!!! :D |
WOW! You've got them together already?? WONDERFUL JOB! I started a hexigon project a year or two ago and have left them sitting so long I wonder if I'll remember how to do it.
wow great job. And so 70's...lol fabric design has come a long way.
yeah I think you are right a brown border and then red would look good. And |
Wonderful job for such headache handed off by your boss. That's some pressure and expectation. You really pulled all those stray pieces together.
I feel that there is enough red in it but if you use red make it the 1st border and a brown border last... and the red border should be narrow i.e. 1 inch....
That turned out wonderful. I love the ideas for the borders. Go for it.

blue borders, and great job. Penny

Great job!
Maybe light blue and then brown. I don't see any other light blue other than in the middle, so that would pull that color out to the edges.
I agree with the small yellow border and then brown. The colors are busy and this would calm the project. Make sure you take a photo and let us see the finished project. Congratulations on a job well done.
Beautiful work! Give yourself a pat on the back for this one!!

I decided on 4" Tan as the first border, 1" Brown as the second border, and a 9" Red drop. Her favorite color is red and loved all the bright colors. I'm using all solids because I can't find these fabrics anymore (of course), but I remember them well. They were some of my favorites in the 70's too. Thanks everyone for your help. |
Beautiful work!!! I love doing the hexagons...my favorites! Is the entire quilt a hexagon or did you square it up. Are you going to applique the hexagon onto the borders?

The top is finished - finally. I think I am going to sew the hexagons end to end to created the binding with those fabrics. I certainly have plenty left over to do that... or maybe not! oooo that would be way too much, the red is enough. So binding? Red, Brown or Tan?

 Looks GREAT  You should be very proud of yourself

Gorgeous and you did a great job. So bright looking, good for you.

Red binding is my vote.
It turned out well. I think the brown would be nice.
I thought you did a great job!
The quilt is beautiful, did you hand piece it? I made a grandmothers flower garden and hand pieced then appliqued to a 16"sq and made a quilt as big as a bedspread. Love it
It's just lovely, I know your boss is going to love it.
Oh my goodness. You did a fantastic job. It is beautiful.
you did a good job. I have tried to do this by just templates and sewing them together, and never got far but have you ever tried the old English way? You trace around your template on paper. then you cut the material 1/4 inch around the paper. then with a running stitch turn the edges over and baste them down to the paper. then stitch them together. its easier and more acurate to cut the papers. when you have them all stitched together, rip out the papers. this is the method I used and it went together great. of course it's done by hand.
You did a beautiful job on this. If it were me, I would only use one color for the border, but whatever you decide, it will be beautiful.
You did a wonderful job placing the colors and retaining your sanity. I love it. I think your idea for a brown and then red border is perfect. Would the brown be wide and the red narrow?
great work, I started a charm quilt about 10 years ago and said I might be done when I was 60, I don't think I'm going to make it before then, that's only 3 years away.
I suggest some color for your inner borarder that is not exactly any of what you have or something will disappear into the boarder. How about some kind of off white and then a darker color like your red and/or brown. |
