My Jelly Roll Rug

2 Attachment(s)
if you are on Instagram, you may have seen the new craze called the Jelly Roll Rug. This rug takes just one jelly roll (40-42 2.5" strips), scraps of batting and lots of thread. Pattern is from Roma Quilts on Etsy or fatquartershop. It's fun to make and goes together quick. Here's mine. I am already making a second rug. If on instagram, follow the hashtag #jellyrollrugalong. Lots of tips and tricks for making your own.

thimblebug6000 02-23-2018 05:02 PM

Very cute! Do the rows get sewn together by machine or hand? If by machine... what type of machine do you have?

mucky 02-23-2018 05:40 PM

I like it very much

fred singer 02-23-2018 05:50 PM

We had someone post awhile ago about having to cut many yards of 1 1/8" batting strips......is that what you used in this project?

Jingle 02-23-2018 05:57 PM

Ariannaquilts 02-23-2018 07:17 PM

Ooh that's awesome I need a couple of them! Seriously I think they would also be great used in the bathroom, I have to try to find out how it's made. Thanks so much for sharing could we possibly encourage you to do a tutorial for us?

sewingsuz 02-23-2018 08:31 PM

Love your rug. This turn out really great.

Mariposa 02-23-2018 08:51 PM

Nicely done!

Suzanne in VT 02-24-2018 03:25 AM

I have been saving pins on Pinterest in order to do one of these, so thanks for pointing us in the direction to the pattern.

I would love a long oval or rectangle for my hallway. Would it be easy to figure out the size to begin with?

Thanks again!

Really cute rug. Intriguing idea. What size is it?

lindaschipper 02-24-2018 06:30 AM

I was on MSQC site a few minutes ago and they have a pattern to make on. Seems like the price was less than $10, which isn't bad, but you still have to add the shipping cost. All your left over 2 1/2" scraps could be used to make a really scrappy one.

obie2 02-24-2018 08:57 AM

That is very nice.

Here's a link to the fat quarter shop which has a downloadable pattern for $10. No shipping :)

Oh my gosh, I used to do the crochet rugs with the fabric scraps. I'll have to try this! Thanks for sharing your cute rug.

Make I ask one quick question please?

Did you put a non-slip backing onto it?

Love the rug and great use of a jelly roll.

CookieZenmilk 02-24-2018 12:30 PM

not sure why it posted twice. sorry about that. It didn't call for a non slip backing. It is not meant for a high traffic area. I spose you could put a non slip backing on it.

One jelly roll made a rug measuring 30" x 44". I cut 17 strips of batting just as the pattern stated. The pattern is just $10 and it is a download or u can purchase the pattern from Roma Quilts on etsy or get it on the fatquartershop. The entire rug is machine stitched. It is beginner friendly. I ironed my rug every time i changed the bobbin. Some people on instagram suggested using Maryellen's Best Press when ironing it. One of the tips on the pattern is to let your machine do the work. Just guide it through, don't pull it. If you pull it, you risk stretching the fabric and your rug will end up bowl shaped. Mine did curl a little bit and I joked that I would throw a blanket over it and drive my car back and forth over it. I believe you could change the shape of the rug by how much you fold the first strip. I just followed the directions on the pattern for my first. I am now making a second rug. These binder clips are very handy. I bought mine on Amazon for under $10 for 100+ clips. It was definitely worth it to me. I suppose you could use clothespins too. A friend of mine voiced concern that the rug would get dirty to which I said, i would throw it in the washer and air dry it. You can get inexpensive jelly rolls on Craftsy for under $20. i used a cheap all purpose thread from Joann's. Any other questions, just holler.

Also the pattern called for stitching the batting strips together. Some instagram people stitched them with a zigzag stitch and some used a batting tape. I just butted the strips next to each other and kept sewing. When all was said and done I couldn't tell where one batting strip ended or started.

JanieH 02-24-2018 01:11 PM

That is so neat - and you could really personalize it to your decor. Thanks for all the information!

2011wannaquilt 02-24-2018 01:50 PM

What a great looking rug. I've been considering making one to match scrappy quilt in guest bedroom. Nice to know that I can make one with only 40 strips.

jamsbuying 02-24-2018 02:08 PM

Very cute!

ccthomas 02-24-2018 06:01 PM

Nice Jelly Roll Rug.

Rose Burnett 02-25-2018 09:43 PM

I have lots of batting (warm and natural) scraps. How wide did you cut the batting?

CookieZenmilk 02-26-2018 11:06 AM

same as width of the strip

weasier22 02-26-2018 05:32 PM

Very nice rug ... Will have to look into making one. Thanks for sharing.

ArtsyOne 02-27-2018 11:37 AM

Love your rug - you did a great job keeping it flat and the strips perfectly straight. I'm impressed - and now I want to make one too.

I know how frustrating it is. Mine is doing the same. And nothing I've tried will fix it. It will end up as a dog mat as it would be too dangerous to use as a rug (as well as being darn ugly).

This is a Cozy Quilt design. Jordan Fabrics has a tutorial on how to make this. There is also a rectangle rug. I have all the materials to make one just have to get it done. BrendaK
