My Jewel in the Curio Quilt

3 Attachment(s)
This is a pattern from the Moda Bakeshop I made with Moda's Coquette fabric. I really liked the quilt from the pattern but decided I wanted to scatter the colors/fabric more so I did not group the four patches and HST together as instructed.

I attached the 3 borders for each side together first (leaving an incomplete seam at the ends of border 2 and 3) and then attached to the quilt top. Not sure this was a great idea but I still don't have a set in table machine and I dreaded feeding the quilt through 3 different times to attached each border. I was a bit frustrated at the time but having the 3 borders does finish the quilt off nicely.

This is one of only maybe 2 quilts out of many dozens I've made that has white solid fabric in it (Kona Milk I believe) and I'm just not sure I am a fan. I think because the white fabric just don't seem as high of quality as the other fabrics--thin and loose weave. It looks fine from a distance, but I am more of an up-close and details kind of gal. I've got several other quilts planned that use a white solid so I think I am going to have to shop for some white on white fabric instead. Maybe after this is quilted the white spaces won't bother me as much. Hopefully.

The last photo shows my backing fabric. This was my favorite print in the Coquette line.

Beautiful bright quilt. I understand what you mean, about the quality of the white fabric, but I think the colour works very well in this quilt. Hopefully it will not shrink up when the quilt is washed. I have learned to get extra when I find a cream or a white that is good quality.

Love this....from the pattern to the fabric choice - to your beautiful piecing. It's a winner.

I am making a Faceted Jewels quilt with a white background. I feel the same way that you do about the Kona, lots of threads and loosely woven. I am trying the bleached Legacy Premium muslin from Joann's. I prewash and I am making small blocks without the "threadiness" of the Kona. I loves the way this muslin feels and sews. It is priced well especially with coupon. Try it!

What a beautiful quilt! The white really makes the colored fabrics sparkle! The quilting will really show up on the white, I think you will love it after its quilted! Hope you will share more pictures then!!

Beautiful quilt, I know what you mean about the white, I have made a couplevof quilts with white, and I think the white looks 'crumpled' not as crisp as the other fabrics.

triplerosa 04-11-2014 01:39 AM

beautiful quilt, fabric choice is great

IrishgalfromNJ 04-11-2014 02:05 AM

Beautiful, beautiful quilt.

leatheflea 04-11-2014 02:41 AM

Love your quilt! I too agree about the white Kona. I buy it by the bolt because I'm a lover of white backgrounds. My thoughts on the "threadiness" of Kona is that maybe the all the extras that are added to print fabrics help it to not be "thready". Starching Kona white helps but not all that much.

abdconsultant 04-11-2014 02:52 AM

Yummie, makes me think of sherbet, beautiful!

Really great job!

Yes, I agree your quilt looks beautiful and the white sets it off. I have a hard time using solids for the very reason you expressed. I hope I don't offend anyone, but I think they are blah. I will go for a blender before using a solid. White on white is a good choice. When using white, that's what I pick. With all that said, I admire quilts that have solids in them. Go figure.

Jordan 04-11-2014 05:26 AM

Love your quilt. Bright and cheery!

AngelinaMaria 04-11-2014 06:46 AM

Thank you all for the nice comments. That white fabric did and still is driving me crazy. I starched it 2 times (once before cutting and then again as I was doing the final press after the borders) and it still is wrinkled looking. I know after it is quilted and washed that it will blend with the rest but it just doesn't look as crisp as the other fabrics.

Homemother--I think you and have may have similar "eyes". Something about a solid just doesn't look right to me as there is no "texture" or "depth" to it. I have some Moda and Kona solids in a few bright colors and I can see using them in small pieces will look okay to me but for anything more extensive I would use a tone on tone. Unfortunately, I purchased at least 7 to 8 large cuts of Moda and Kona whites or creams in the past year to use so I will be using them up somehow. I think the cream ones will look better but most of my current fabric really calls for a white instead.
