My last jelly roll quilt.

I have officially sworn off buying jelly rolls. I had 3 and laid out some from each to make a jelly roll race quilt. Luckily before starting I noticed that some of the strips were 2 1/2" and some others were nearly 3". So I sorted them by size, made two race quilts that will go to Quilts for Kids and this larger one from the 3" strips. Next time I'll cut my own strips so I will have some uniformity.

Anyway here is the larger one.

Great colors. Sorry you had trouble with strips. We purchase jelly rolls to
save time. :). Your quilt turned out great

Pretty quilt, I very rarely buy the precuts because of this....

jenOSU 02-15-2014 05:24 PM

I like to prewash my fabric so don't really like precuts. Your quilt is still gorgeous.

Diane007 02-15-2014 05:59 PM

very nice quilt

Monika 02-15-2014 06:01 PM

very pretty! What a drag to have to deal with sizing issues, but glad you caught it before sewing things together.

GrammaNan 02-15-2014 06:34 PM

I have never purchased Jelly Rolls and now I may never after hearing about your problems. Do you think you should contact the manufacturer? I would be upset if it happened to me. Good for you for figuring out a way to "make lemonade".

I love jelly rolls - I usually only purchase Moda, Riley Blake or Robert Kaufman - I've never had problems with any of them. Now my new addiction is Moda Scrap bags - they have jelly roll strips but some of them are 2 1/2" and others are up to 3" - just a grab bag of stuff - but its very inexpensive

JuneBillie 02-15-2014 06:50 PM

It sure did turn out pretty.

Really great job!

Quiltngolfer 02-16-2014 06:13 AM

Your quilt is beautiful! I use Jelly Rolls all the time. So far, I have not had any problem with them. They are so handy for me. If you cut them , then you will know they are straight.

pocoellie 02-16-2014 07:47 AM

A great looking quilt!! The reasons for not buying jelly rolls is the main reason that I don't buy pre-cut fabrics. I have received a couple jelly rolls as gifts, and had to trip them all down to 2".

QUILTNMO 02-16-2014 08:31 AM

great quilt!!!!

CherryPie 02-16-2014 05:04 PM

Beautiful quilt. I bought my first jelly roll in December but haven't done anything with it yet. I really like how you did your's. Thanks for sharing!!!!

Gannyrosie 02-16-2014 05:15 PM

Sorry about the issue of different sizes, but so happy you caught it. I've never bought jelly rolls, but could see the time saving point, especially with framing blocks. It still came out well and such a beautiful job with the colors.

heather1949 02-17-2014 03:29 AM

Sorry you had trouble but it sure looks great , well done.

Moonglow 02-17-2014 03:32 AM

twinkie 02-17-2014 04:09 AM

I have had a similar problem.

2manyhobbies 02-17-2014 04:45 AM

Turned out beautiful

GrammieJan 02-17-2014 07:03 AM

Beautiful quilt! Sorry you had problems with the strips. I have to use precuts because of a back disability and they are perfect for me. However, I am particular about brands and have not had a real problem. The only minor complaint for me is the pinked edges...a straight cut would be nicer.

Jingle 02-17-2014 09:19 AM

It turned out very pretty. I have one jelly roll and think I will use it by itself.

jaly3162 02-17-2014 10:17 AM

Where do you get the Moda Scrap bags from?

Caswews 02-17-2014 10:23 AM

Very very nice and a great idea to cut one's own strips for uniformity .. Thanks for sharing

MargeD 02-17-2014 10:57 AM

Great quilt, sorry you had such a big difference in the strips. However, I agree with jenOSU - I prefer to prewash my fabrics before using in a quilt, and I haven't been happy with the few precut strips and squares I have purchased in the past. I have so much fabric in my stash I can generally find what I want and cut it up - if I don't, oh well, a road trip to the fabric store is in order.

wraez 02-17-2014 03:10 PM

I've not purchased jelly rolls but have heard that the cuts can sometimes be 'off', you did a great job with this quilt, love it!

tessagin 02-17-2014 03:24 PM

Really nice looking quilt. love the colors. I cut my own strips because of this very situation happening to me in the past. Some were wider than others and some not as long varying from 1-3 inches. That was before pre-washing. I usually take a safety pin and pin 4-5 strips together end to end by folding then put into lingerie bag. They don't tangle up.

caspharm 02-17-2014 03:33 PM

Very pretty quilt. I have had issues with the batiks, since they are handcut. I didn't realize other fabrics were an issue. I've bought Moda jelly rolls and honey rolls with no problems.

Poakie 02-17-2014 03:38 PM

Very nice quilt. I love the jelly rolls. Just finished one in the black and tan batiks for my nephew and love it.

MtnMama1955 02-17-2014 03:41 PM

Love the bright colors!!

Auntie Em 02-17-2014 05:45 PM

Very nice....GREAT job!!!

wannaquilt1 02-17-2014 09:57 PM

I would call them to let them know. They might send you a new roll to make up for it tho.... ha ha! Just what you need is another Jelly Roll!

Purpleprint 02-17-2014 11:50 PM

The colors are Wonderful.

Sunnie 02-18-2014 05:40 AM

Thank you all for your very nice comments. I do have to confess that I unwrapped and threw away the ID info almost 6 months ago so I have no idea what brand these strips were. <Lesson learned!> I think 2 of the 3 were one brand. Interesting that batiks can be more problematic and all 3 of these jelly rolls were batiks.

ItsJustMe 02-18-2014 08:21 AM

So sorry your experience wasn't positive. I no longer purchase pre-cuts for that very reason, and I too pre-shrink my fabrics before using.
