This is my first attempt at FMQ (stippling) and I have to say.... I really suck at it! My stitches are so uneven. I need much more practice. It was kind of fun tho.

I think we are all our own worst critics!

From here, it looks great!

erstan947 06-30-2010 12:32 PM

As I write this I am doing fmq on my sewing machine for the first time on a real quilt. I'm like you. I need much more practice. We won't get good at it unless we do it! So I'll make a pact with you to keep on trying! Happy Quilting.

LadybugPam 06-30-2010 12:45 PM

I love FMQ and I recommend lots and lots of practice ... and no deprecation allowed!!
Your quilt looks wonderful - and anyone who can make time to look critically has no life.

Farmer Girl 06-30-2010 12:48 PM

I am so bad at FMQ I don't even suck at it. Sucking would be a step up. And I know that it would still not look a fraction as good as what you did. It's pretty and fun.

old quilter 06-30-2010 03:34 PM

It looks great. I can't believe that is your first try. You did great. I have not been able to make it look that nice.

Ditter43 06-30-2010 03:41 PM

I love the fabrics and is that rickrack I see inside the border? I can't really see the quilting anyway!!! Good job!! :thumbup:Love your avatar picture too!

QUILTNMO 06-30-2010 03:42 PM

looks good to me you did a good job

mzsooz 06-30-2010 06:47 PM

Thanks everyone! It feels so good to finish up a project. I worked today on another topper and it is almost done. Just have to hand sew the binding down and I'm done! Tonight I'm going to make a dust ruffle for my coming soon granddaughter's crib. Just found out she may be born in the next couple of weeks! EEEK! I've got so many things to sew for her!!! And need to finish her baby quilt too. :-D

MissM 06-30-2010 07:36 PM

Don't feel bad, I've tried it and haven't had the nerve to go past the practice sandwich. At least you had the courage. :-D

watson's mom 06-30-2010 08:14 PM

Looks fine to me. Very nice quilt.

kbiederman 06-30-2010 08:36 PM

Okay, someone else was brave enough to show their stippling in a close up picture so here is mine. My question is... did I do the stippling too small? I had no idea how close together the stitching should be. It is a very small topper so I assumed the stippling should be smaller too.

And yes, I see where I crossed over lines :( Darn it.

Thanks!

jljack 06-30-2010 09:51 PM

Ha-HA!!! I did notice there was no close up!!! Go ahead...be brave...let us gawk at your "horrible" stitches!!! LOL   We have all been there, done that!!!

no1jan 07-01-2010 12:39 AM

I've never done FMQ but it looks nice to me!

manyana 07-01-2010 12:48 AM

I have not even tried this. I am chicken. I would be very pleased if my first attempt turned out half as good as yours.
Love the whole quilt

amma 07-01-2010 05:41 AM

Cute quilt :D:D:D

Polly C 07-01-2010 06:27 AM

I didn't have the nerve to show my first attempt! It really does get easier & better w/practice. Just keep at it.

mytwopals 07-01-2010 07:24 AM

And yet, the quilt still looks very nice. Don't be hard on yourself and keep practicing.

Pineapple Princess 07-01-2010 07:30 AM

Very nice!

littlehud 07-01-2010 09:18 AM

I think it looks wonderful. Keep working at it.

mimee4 07-02-2010 07:32 AM

Very neat quilt - like the scrappy look, even in the border. Keep practicing, even though this one looks so good.

LadybugPam 07-02-2010 08:10 AM

mzsooz .... you funny! Your stippling is fine. You'd find a few toe catchers on my quilts too. Slow you hand a touch.

PS I have crossed the stitches when I free motion "giggles" - they are the shape of little balloons.

KathyAire 07-02-2010 10:52 AM

I love the fabric in that quilt. Can't really see the quilting but I bet it's better than you see it.

Rainbow 07-02-2010 01:00 PM

NICE !!!! I may just get my next quilt done in FMQ...I have put it off long enough, it seems.

Yep, the more you practice the better you get. A tip I read some where.....if you are new to fmq use thread that blends with the fabric. It will hide the boo boos

anicra 07-02-2010 03:16 PM

Don't be so hard on yourself- it looks great!

QUILTNMO 07-02-2010 03:17 PM
