My Little Brown Bird Project

2 Attachment(s)
I received the pattern book for the Little Brown Bird quilt yesterday and couldn't wait to get started. I will have to buy new fabric for the background and backing because I don't 8 yards of anything in my stash, but most of the other fabrics will come out of my cabinets. I had to google a couple of the techniques that are mentioned in the book so I will have to do a few practice squares before starting on the blocks with things like Broderie Perse (sounds like a French wine to me) or Scherenschnitte (which sounds like it would be good cooked in an oven). The two together would make a pretty good meal, lol. Anyway, I hope to finish at least one block a week so this quilt is going to take a while. I hope to post progress pictures on this thread for anyone that wants to follow along on this journey. Here I'll post Margaret Docherty's vision of each block, then my fabric choices and finally my finished blocks as they are completed. Please feel free to offer advice on color selections or any other area that you feel might help to bring this project to completion. Heaven knows I need all the advice I can get.

I had to look up those terms (to see how long it should be in the oven).

Persian Embroidery & German Scissor Cutting - with blocks like these you will have a whole new repertoire of skills by the end.

It will be a lovely finished item but also a fun journey. I can't really comment on color choices - I find it difficult to work with batiks - I end up with a muddy mix of mid-range material (say it 3 times quickly). : )

I look forward to seeing the blocks you post. Thanks for sharing.

This will be one beautiful quilt! It looks like it will take a bit of time to complete. It also looks like it will test the skills of a good quilter. I look forward to following your journey.

This quilt, when done, will be a gorgeous masterpiece! Please do post pictures as you make this journey. What type of applique will you be using? Needle turn, machine, etc? We had a member doing this quilt top and posted as she went along. Beautiful blocks and so much work. Haven't heard from her in a good while. I needle turn applique but not to this degree. I will be waiting for a picture of each block as you complete them. Very proud for you. Maureen

I've heard of those techniques but can't remember how to do them.
That's a beautiful piece! Can't wait to see it.

Looking forward to seeing your progress on this! It's a project in my bucket list, but need to find a book first.

That is going to be absolutely gorgeous & a heirloom quilt when finished. I can't imagine making something like that in a million years. I really like applique but can only do simple applique. I'm looking forward to following along with you as you post blocks that you make.

I finished block 1 today. It didn't take me long to figure out that I really am no good at appliqueing anything as small as 1/4" so I did a little modification on the 2 little birds. I don't think it detracts from the overall block to much. The 1st picture is my finished block, the 2nd picture is from the pattern for one of the birds. As you can see the pieces are insanely small and I just couldn't get the tail turned enough that I thought it would hold up. So I changed birds and the 3rd picture is the one I used. Now I'm off to find fabric for Block 2.
