My little girl has Autism and was terrified of the sewing machine. I had bought her a tiny Barbie sewing machine last year, but she was afraid of it. Today she took it out and said mom can we sew today. I ran to my stash and pulled out and cut a small square for a pillow. The first 3 side were not pinned, I just helped hold as she sewed around. She turned it and stuffed it herself. The 3 pins on the end almost ended her sewing, but she overcame to sew the end shut. If you know anything about Autism, then you know my little girl climbed a mountain today (fear of sounds and fear of sharp things)

This is absolutely inspiring. I'm so proud of your little girl, and you are a terrific mother for encouraging her! I'm sure she'll treasure that pillow for years to come.
How wonderful,we are all so proud of her.Not as much as mom though
Fantastic!
I can tell you are so proud of her! This was a huge obstacle she overcame and did a wonderful job at it. You both should be proud!  Here's to more sewing and reaching the top of more mountains. HUGS! |
Oh how exciting for her! What a wonderful joyful memory for you! and an awesome pillow she made!!
Absolutely beautiful! What a GIANT step that was! My grandson has Asperger's syndrome (mild form of autism). He has had a lot of social problems and fine motor movement impairment. He's almost 18 now and working on his GED (school was not working with him). I hope your little girl will continue to make those giant steps. Autistic children are often very talented and very smart in particular areas.
Thanks for sharing this with us! |
Awe, she's so cute! Great job on the pillow, tell her!
This was a great step! Wonderful! For you both!
She is a doll and I am so proud of her. It is a big step. I worked with an autistic young man and there were some things that were so hard for him to try. We all cheered each time he overcame a hurdle. Her pillow is wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

My 12-year old DS has severe autism, and I know how much these milestones mean! Good job Isabelle for overcoming her sensory issues to make the pillow, and good job Mom for your love and patience!
BRAVO!!!!!!!!! It is not easy to have a child with autism to get over fears. I also have a 17 year old son with autism and a great nephew who is only 4 and has just been dignosed with autism. CONGRATS

very exciting for her.
Wow, I can totally understand what an acomplishment that is!!!
That is sooo great!!! My 17 year old daughter has a developmental disability, she has never shown much interest in sewing. When she was in middle school she took a Living Skills class and had to make a pillow and a pincushion. She missed a few days and had to complete the pillow at home, I helped her with the foot pedal and she used my Bernina. I was very proud of her for trying something new and scary, so I can imagine how very proud you are of your little girl. Congatulations on the milestone!!

Thank you for the wonderful comments. After she was done sewing I had to walk out of the room so she wouldn't see my tears and think something was wrong.
Awww, that is great and I bet she is soooo proud!
Great achievement. Hope your day is repeated often.
That's a great accomplishment! She (and you) must be very proud!
Shes beautiful! What a special girl!
I'm happy for you both!!
What a great mother/daughter moment!

She is so pretty and she has eyelashes to die for. What a great milestone she mastered today. Hooray for her and hooray for you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can I see a little hint of a proud smile in that third picture? Her cheek looks more rounded, I think she was happy to be on the home stretch! Congrats to Isabelle and her proud momma. Almost like when she took her first steps I bet!
Sorry about the double post. Didn't go at first, and I got impatient. |

How old is she? |
Congratulations! I'm so happy for both of you. A day to remember.
Double wow for both of you! My DGS has mild to moderate autism. Mostly evident in social interaction, speech delay, fixation and lack of focus when not fixated.
I am so happy for you and understand your feelings of joy.
Next time, try a little of the school glue non acid glue stick instead of pins. It works great holding seams together, and NO PINS! Keep up the wonderful work and encouragement, the love is already there! |
What a milestone for this precious child. I bet she got a huge hug for her accomplishment in facing a fear, and doing such a beautiful job. Way to go little one.
She is a beautiful little girl. This brought tears to my eyes (tears of joy) to see how you love and encourage her. So many don't know the struggles of someone with Autism. I used to work with the physicially and mentally challenged young people. They are so precious. Their love is so real. She will treasure that pillow. I love the picture of the kitty, too.
She is one of our future sewing or quilting enthusiasts. Tell her she did a great job and we are so proud of her. |
She brought tears to my eyes. This is so special!
God love her little heart!!! That is so sweet and what a blessing!!
I'm in tears here for the happiness you both experienced today
Please tell her she made a Beautiful Pillow and we are all so proud of her and you .. :-D :-D  |
Thanks for sharing. Remember you were right there with her as she climbed that mountain. I am proud for both you and her.
She did an awesome job. I hope she is very proud of her pillow.
oh, good for her!!! i have two autistic children and i know how hard it is for them(and the families). my daughter is 11 and hers is in the form of aspergers. she has been so afraid of the sewing machine that she leaves the room if she sees me going near it. that's a big step for a little girl!!!
Congratulations on overcoming a hurdle for your pretty little daughter. I know you must be so happy and I bet she is too! Hope more good things continue for her and your family!
