this is my Mexican Star I made as a Christmas gift 2015. I loved it ...the receiver wasn't thrilled ...don't know why.

ManiacQuilter2 06-19-2016 04:38 AM

That is so sad that she didn't like it. You can certainly enjoy it instead.

QuiltnNan 06-19-2016 04:48 AM

nicely done

Tartan 06-19-2016 04:51 AM

Pretty Mexican Stars. So sorry it was under appreciated!

I guess I should have stated it was given to my own daughter. Five months later and she still hung it up. Maybe I'll just make myself one, instead. oh well!

I'm so sorry your daughter didn't appreciate all your work. It is beautiful.

loisf 06-19-2016 05:42 AM

I think your quilt is very pretty. Maybe your daughter is like mine and just doesn't like quilts, beautiful or otherwise. It is so disappointing when your efforts aren't rewarded with appreciation. I made a very pretty lap quilt for my brother-in-law's wedding and never even got a thank you note. You'd think folks in their 60's would know better.

JenniePenny 06-19-2016 06:53 AM

It's very pretty! Maybe it hasn't been hung up yet because your daughter lays it on her bed, or lays it across her lap while she is sitting? You did a great job on it and we quilters are happy to admire it here.

greencat 06-19-2016 08:11 AM

Great looking wallhanging- I like the colors you used!

What is it with that these days? Good etiquette has sure flown by the wayside. Graduations, showers, weddings. I can't remember the last time I got a " thank you" note.

Oldpiglady, your quilt is absolutely beautiful. Don't let it get you down. When I was much younger I didnt appreciate things as I do now. Perspective is often found in age.

Jordan 06-19-2016 10:27 AM

I think your quilt is lovely. Too bad the recipient didn't appreciate it. Possibly a non quilter does not appreciate what work and love goes into making a quilt!! :(

dunster 06-19-2016 11:43 AM

People who don't quilt often don't understand that quilts can be hung on walls, as art. Or perhaps she does understand that, but doesn't have a wall that's suitable. I think it's beautiful too.

Terricat 06-19-2016 01:39 PM

I made a handkerchief quilt for my mom a couple years ago, using hankies that were her mother's or grand-mother's and a few unknowns. I personally thought it was pretty cool. It wasn't my idea; my mom had seen one in a magazine and had asked if I would me one like that if she provided the hankies? I said sure, but there was NO timeline, so I planned it for her 90th birthday. On her birthday when I surprised her with it, she said "OH!" And that was it. Didn't say she loved it, didn't say 'oh it's nice', nothing, and I didn't get the feeling that she was speechless, it was just ---- nothing. Months and months after the fact she has expressed gratitude---- a little bit. :) So I understand how you feel. Your quilt is lovely, you did a perfect job on it!

QUILTNMO 06-19-2016 04:11 PM

very pretty sorry she didnt like it!!!

redquilter 06-19-2016 04:43 PM

It's lovely and since it's your daughter, I wouldn't hesitate to tell her "if she's not crazy about it, that's fine, but I love it so can I have it back?"

absolutely! I have given both my kids a number of quilts and really don't expect that they will use or have all of them displayed even. My DIL refuses to use the table toppers I've given her on the table--says her boys will mess them up so uses them (if seasonal) on the wall as decoration--I've said I'll do wall quilts too if you would like, but... my daughter's house is very nicely decorated but because of that, she doesn't want many quilts displayed--she uses one on the bed and her husband has a lap quilt I gave him, but otherwise she has one that hangs over the rail of her loft--and they have several. She does switch them out, again more seasonally. I have to admit that even I don't have all the quilts I've made displayed--usually just one on the back of the sofa and one on stair rail!

You did well. BrendaK

pocoellie 06-19-2016 05:23 PM

It's a beautiful quilt, oldpiglady, so sorry that your daughter apparently doesn't like it. Maybe you could ask for it back, and let her know you'll make something else more to her liking.

go read my story (search on ""so ashamed") if you want to see what MY Daughter did. Just ask for it back and go from there. It is a great quilt. Jane Quilter

It's a little heartbreaking when we pour time and effort, and usually much love, into our quilts, only to have it not appreciated. I'm sorry your beautiful quilt isn't appreciated as it should be. It's beautiful. I made a baby quilt for someone, who did thank me, but there was no enthusiasm behind it. I later learned that this woman is very status-oriented, and my quilt did not have the magic designer label. I know how much work and love went into it, and I am still glad I gave it. I won't worry about the gift's reception. Besides, everyone has different tastes, and that's all right.

zzmom 06-19-2016 06:33 PM

I love the Mexican Stars pattern. Yours turned out great!

lscho4jm 06-19-2016 07:03 PM

It has been pointed out to me by my own (adult) children that I am an olde timey quilter. :) My daughter now guides me to what the next generation is in to. LOL

QM 06-19-2016 09:06 PM

It is a fine quilt. The only thing I can think of is maybe your daughter prefers more value contrast? She obviously did not hate it or it would not still be hanging.

twinkie 06-20-2016 02:54 AM

Jill, you did a great job and you definitely know how your daughter is. Please don't forget to send me the pattern or link to your China Girl quilt (I think that is the name of it) You go girlfriend and don't let that get you down. You have definitely been through worse. GOD Bless

soozieQ 06-20-2016 03:20 AM

We love it!. I like to surprise but with my young people it seems better to let them be involved in the pattern fabric decisions, they get more satisfaction. It is disheartening when you get nothing in response.

maviskw 06-20-2016 03:31 AM

Maybe she just procrastinates, like I do sometimes. Someday she'll get around to it. When you are there, perhaps you could point out a spot on her wall that would be just the spot for it. And maybe she has no "spot".

jhoward 06-20-2016 03:31 AM

I'm sorry it wasn't appreciated. I'm sure if you offered it up.....there would be a long line of takers. It's really nice.

dinlauren 06-20-2016 04:57 AM

AWWWW! That's a shame...I have a feeling your daughter probably doesn't care for quilts like you do. That would make me sad too. But happy I got to keep it! It's a beaut! I made all of my siblings a quilt one year for Christmas and no one "disliked" them at the time, but I have no idea if they actually ever used them.

mojo11 06-20-2016 06:25 AM

You made a beautiful quilt. I have no idea why someone wouldn't be thrilled to receive it..???

Taughtby Grandma 06-20-2016 08:22 AM

I think it is beautiful!

NIICHMOM 06-20-2016 08:50 AM

I have some family members like that also... Just yesterday I had a sister-in-law say she didn't want a quilt as she can't see why people cut fabric apart just to sew it back together ... I didn't answer anything to her but decided there & then I definately, didn't have to make her a quilt... But I definately do like yours, and I have often looked at that pattern several times...

Jingle 06-20-2016 01:14 PM

Very pretty and great colors and pattern.

LindaMRB 06-20-2016 03:08 PM

And they let you know they were unhappy with it?
Too bad they could not muster up some enthusiasm for such a nice gift.

There's no response for folks who do not appreciate artistic endeavors or the creative spirit.
Yeah, she doesn't need a quilt…

nunnyJo 06-20-2016 04:54 PM

This is gorgeous

ccthomas 06-20-2016 05:10 PM

Nice Mexican Star.

heather1949 06-20-2016 09:01 PM

In that case I would have kept it and said sorry :)
