We had a water leak in our family room so we had to remodel it. In the process I got a new corner just for my sewing. I'm pretty excited about my new space. The rest of the room has not quite been put back together yet but my area is almost done. Just thought I would share with you. The only thing I don't have is a design wall, I need to somehow figure out how to manage that one

My cutting table. The other side opens up to make it bigger. It is on wheels as well as my sewing desk so I can move it all around

More, if you don't mind. The cabinet above the purples is all back size pieces. I fold all my pieces over 2 yards a little different so I know at a glance that I have enough for borders etc. My fat quarters are in the rolling drawers under the cutting table.

Jim's Gem 09-08-2008 08:43 PM

Yes Izzy, the whole thing is for all my sewing stuff. Unfortunately it didn't all fit. I have about 10 or so large rubbermaid tubs in the garage with all my flanels, christmas, fall, homespun and misc fabrics and UFO's and scraps and stuff. It is a light and bright room. Especially during the day. I need to get some new blinds on the window. We had a couple of halogen lights installed into the ceiling over my sewing machine.

Izy 09-08-2008 08:51 PM

So how long have you been stashing......I can only DREAM of EVER having that amount of fabric to play with...

Jim's Gem 09-08-2008 08:53 PM

Um..... you should see my DH's face right now after he read your response. He says "you're not helping" I have been quilting for about 8 years or so, but did some crafting before then. I got the fabric collecting down pretty fast and pretty good. I am fortunate to have lots of places to shop for fabrics close by and have gotten some pretty fantastic buys on my fabrics.

Izy 09-08-2008 08:57 PM

Tell DH I could relieve you just a little bit, have you seen those TV makeover programmes where they de-clutter for you...I could offer my services in your very nice sewing room, THEN whats left would all fit into your cabinets - AND save your legs going to the storeroom where your rubbermaid's are

jbsstrawberry 09-08-2008 09:00 PM

all I can say is OMG how awesome!!! The cabinest ROCK!! and all that fabric!!! How fantastic!! I love your sewing machine cabinet too!! Heck I love the whole room!!! Cool beans!!!

Celeste 09-08-2008 09:08 PM

I gotta admit, as I scrolled down the first picture, my attention was riveted by the canine in the corner!:mrgreen: So glad you included those beautiful baby's pictures!

Your new sewing room is FABULOUS! Those cabinets are beautiful closed or OPEN!

tlrnhi 09-08-2008 09:22 PM

OMG!! Can I go shopping in your space?
I think you have a great sewing space there and your helpers are just adorable!!

CissyQuilts 09-08-2008 09:23 PM

:shock:OMG!! Gayle, your stash is to die for!!! And I just love your trio of helpers. :D

Jim's Gem 09-09-2008 07:37 AM

I have friends that come over sometimes to find that "perfect" piece that they need in their quilts. I love to share with my friends!!! I have also handed over fabs for friends to make quilts for Home of the Brave. It took two of my friends to help me unpack and put all these in the cabinets. One of them I went shopping with on Labor day and she remembered better than I did what I already had in my stash.

Knot Sew 09-09-2008 07:41 AM

Oh my gosh, so much so neat that is wonderful. I'm at a loss for words

Jim's Gem 09-09-2008 07:45 AM

Ruth, it won't stay so neat for long!! I try to keep it somewhat neat so I can find things, but these cabinets are new and of course I wanted to start out organized!!

Quilting Aggi 09-09-2008 07:53 AM

ooooooooooooooooh Gale!! Now THAT is a stash to be proud of!! What a beautiful sewing room you have!!! I just love your Cabinet set!! You certainly put them to good use I see!! you can view most of your stash at a great glance!!! I have a sewing cabinet very similar to yours only mine is brown. Unfortunately it has been in a U-Haul storage unit for the last four years.... I am still saving for my house.... hopefully this year or early next I will have a home for my sewing cabinet... You have inspired me on how I want to design my sewing room!!!

Elizabeth A. 09-09-2008 07:53 AM

Wow Gayle that's beautiful! Did you allow yourself any room to grow?

Jim's Gem 09-09-2008 07:57 AM

Elizabeth, this is in my family room. I share the room with a couple computers, a fire place, treadmill(glorified quilt hanger) a couch and tons of books. Actually, at the moment because we had to remodel, most everything except the computers is still in boxes in the room. I don't have a whole lot of room to grow. I'm not sure where to put a design wall! But I like being where my DH and kids (if they are ever home) are when I am sewing. I do have quite a bit of it in the garage, stuff that I don't have to get to all the time. (the garage is the door you see on the other side of my sewing table) If I can ever get a long arm machine, which I would love to do, it would probably have to go upstairs in one of the bedrooms.

Craftybug 09-09-2008 09:01 AM

Gayle, I love it, so spacious and neat and organized. And all fabrics that don't fit in the cabinets you don't have to keep them in bins you can send them my way and I will put them to use right away.

justme 09-09-2008 09:07 AM

 I am green with envy.... first thing I said when I saw all your fabirc, was man I could go shopping there!!!

It is a great room.... enjoy!!!! I like the idea of being close to family while enjoying your quilting.

GailG 09-09-2008 03:44 PM

Oh, my Gosh!!! You are so fortunate! That open cabinet shot is making me drool!! That is my dream! Out of curiosity, how much fabric do you have in each one of those pieces. Are they fat quarters? Looks like much more. Congratulations!! That is really "uptown."

mary quite contrary 09-09-2008 03:55 PM

I'm jealous. I think I need to go shopping. Nice room.

beachlady 09-09-2008 03:56 PM

Very impressive! I love to show my DH other's stashes - I have a fraction of what you do and he thinks I have a lot. Thanks for making life easier for me!!!

Great room! Nice job!!

Jim's Gem 09-09-2008 04:08 PM

Gail, the larger folded ones have over 2 yards. The others are from 1/2 - 2 yards. My fat quarters are stored elsewhere. The one cabinet, over the purples is my collection of quilt backs, they are from 5 - 10 yards. I might add the the backs were all bought for anywhere from $1 (the majority) to $3.00 per yard. All are good quality fabrics I just happened to great deals on them. I used to have many leaning towers of fabric, fairly organized but deffinately wanting to fall over. My DH got tired of looking at my leaning piles and when we had to redo the room because of a water leak (directly over my fabrics, which did not get wet) he wanted me to "put them away" so....

Dorothy of Kansas 09-09-2008 04:14 PM

Gayle, that room is fantastic! I love the floor to ceiling with drawers! I'm getting such good ideas from all the ladies on this board. One day, I'll have my room together...meanwhile, need any help making more room for your fabric????? ;-)

Chele 09-09-2008 04:27 PM

Great sewing room! And I love your stash! Can I come play?

This looks really organized but if I turned 180 degrees it would be a whole different picture. There are boxes still unpacked, empty rubbermaid bins my fabrics came out of, a broken chair and you can't even see the fireplace because of all the boxes yet. I am hoping that I can keep this part of the room fairly organized for a while. I needed to start that way!!

Lucky Patsy's 09-09-2008 09:03 PM

OOHH! I have an acute case of sewingroom envy!!!

Fabulous stash and cabinets!

zyxquilts 09-09-2008 09:15 PM

Beautiful room!! I've done pretty good at keeping my "fabric shop" tidy since my sisters organized me...now I need to get my sewing area cleaned up too - and you've given me a great example!!

gcathie 09-09-2008 11:06 PM

Oh my gosh .....what a stash...can I come and play....

Marcia 09-10-2008 06:41 AM

Fanning myself and trying to catch my breath!!!! WOW!!! I looked at the cabinets in the first photo and thought--"that is REALLY neat". Then, I scrolled down and saw all your fabric inside and my jaw dropped and I gasped!!! I had to call my husband in to see!!!!! He is as impressed as I am-with your cabinets AND your stash!!! Oh, you must be in HEAVEN!!!! How wonderful for you-enjoy it.
