Hapy Birthday.
Way to go with your new sewing machine.

purplefiend 08-11-2011 01:30 PM

The thrift stores near me have lots of clothing and kitchenware and not much else. Happy Birthday, I'm so happy you found her. I love my featherweights, I currently have 4. :-D

I don't think it is a centennial. This one was made in 1953. Seems like I read somewhere that the centennials were made in 1951.

NUTMEG10 08-11-2011 04:05 PM

You will love her they run like a charm. What a great find, your DH is a keeper.

Yeah, just haven't decided on a name yet. Waiting for something to come to me.

chris_quilts 08-11-2011 07:09 PM

Happy Birthday and lucky you. I came across one recently in an antiques place that wanted $375.00 for it. Pretty but not that pretty. She stayed there!!!

Dee 08-11-2011 07:30 PM

Very nice to yourself gift.

QM 08-11-2011 07:40 PM

You never know what you will find in a thrift shop. Obviously, you made out like a bandit.

Years ago, a friend of mine was singing a concert. Her DH was headed towards a thrift store as she went in, She said, "Bud, don't buy anything unless you find a New York Martin (a very valuable antique guitar) for $5." When she came out, that was exactly what he had. The thrift store owner thought it wasn't worth much because it was stringless and looked kinda beat up. Thrift store may just have junk...or may have real treasures.

JEM65 08-11-2011 07:41 PM

Happy Birthday to you! What a wonderful present for you!

d.rickman 08-11-2011 07:48 PM

Congratulations, she is a beauty - now you need to join the Featherweight group on Quilt Board.

lue 08-11-2011 10:39 PM

Congratulations! Any reason you're not telling us how much you paid for her (other than it's none of our business). I want to know so that I won't lose heart that I can find one at a great price!

deplaylady 08-11-2011 10:46 PM

Well, happy birthday to you! And congratulations on your new toy!

Enquiring minds would like to know but also understand if you decide not to tell us.

Not really any reason not to tell, I just haven't done it yet. I paid $150 for it - not exactly a great thrift store bargain price but it sure beats most of the prices I've seen. I was happy with it and think I got a good deal.

Got a great deal for a FW. Lucky you again and Happy Birthday!

BSKTLOFR-QUILTER 08-12-2011 02:38 PM

Great pick. I never run into anything like this darndaluck. Enjoy it.

sylviasmom 08-12-2011 03:33 PM

For medical reasons, I am restricted to lifting no more than 25 pounds. A Bernina probably weighs more than that. A FW weighs about 12 pounds. Ideal weight to carry to a class.

carrieg 08-12-2011 03:47 PM

I think DH may have shopped in thrift stores before! He knew to take a pic LOL

Happy Birthday to you! Enjoy your new toy.

It also sews a perfect straight stitch. I have a Bernina 330 for a travel machine and it isn't as light as a FW, but not too heavy, but let me tell you...my 830 weighs about 38 pounds!

Since he retired, I think he has learned the locations of lots of thrift stores. He loves yard sales and flea markets too. He is getting to be pretty "thrifty".

I cleaned it; oiled it; and it runs like a champ. Case is in need of some repair, but there are lots of attachments with it and the original manual. Monday was my birthday so this is my present to myself.

What a beautiful B-day gift. Wishing you many many more Happy B-days and many years of sewing on your new toy. Aren't these FW's just the neatest things to work with!! I have two and love them both. I made an entire bed quilt, including the quilting on my 1937 FW in May for a graduation gift. Just bought my 1936 a couple of weeks ago at a moving sale for $100 - with orig. book and loads of attachments.

I've seen some at a quilt store for appr. $400.00 but can't bring myself to spend that much. You hit the jack pot with this one.

Have you tried shopping on Ebay? Sometimes there are some good ones and you never know what price you can get them for.
