I thought with everyone posting photos of their trusty older machines, I would do so likewise. She is a 1950 Singer 128-23 whatever that means. She runs like a dream, but is NO FEATHERWEIGHT!!! She has a vibrating shuttle bobbin case with long, skinny bobbins. I am still learning to wind one correctly. She belonged to the great grandmother of my daughter-in-law. DIL doesn't sew. I probably should take her to have her checked out and see about getting new wiring that is safe.

wow, cool machine

Very cool machine!!
But towards the end ---I thought you were going to take your DIL in to get checked out!!!!!! |
I like your old lady. I think I have one in a closet somewhere. I must dig her out to check out her condition.

absolutely, getting her checked out and wired so you can enjoy this beauty. Don't take any chances! Your DIL is wonderful to let you have this.

My mother has one of those in her attic, she says I can have it. It is the machine I started sewing on. I have to talk to her, soon. Do you plan on using it?

I don't have the case key, but there are several (actually lots) for sale on Ebay. I have a Singer fix-it guy around the corner from me. I'll be taking her to him and will ask about more bobbins and a key. |
Very pretty and you are so lucky to get it.

Cool machine, my husband bought me one at a garage sale. It works great.
|
SHE REALLY IS BEAUTIUFL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bopeep |
My mother used to have one of these.
|
My DH brought me one from a garage sale last year. I still haven't sewn anything on it yet, maybe it'll be a good winter project. The sale price was $10, our neighbor only wanted $5 since it was going to a good home.

I have an old lady too!! Mine dates to 1949 and I got her from Craigslist.

She's lovely.

Wow she looks brand new.
I have a treadle that has those kind of bobbins and vibrating shuttle. The only way I could figure out to wind the bobbin was to start it by hand and wrap the thread around the spindle of the bobbin several times before putting it on the machine. Yes, there was much swearing and cussing and fussing about before I successfully wound the bobbin. So if someone does have an easier way I would love to hear it. I have yet to sew on her because I must not have put the leather belt on tight enough so winding the bobbin stretched it just enough that it isn't grabbing any more. I also need to get needles. I used a standard needle in it and it would not pick up the bobbin thread, I think the needle is too short. Just haven't taken the time to fiddle around with the old girl. I do want to make a quilt top on it though and learn how to treadle. |
Holy old thread resurection, but i cant resist, it came up when searching for 128-23's ( i have 2 and parts of a third)
easiest way I have found to wind the bobbin it to position the thread leveler lever all the way to the right and then just capture the thread between the winder and the bobbin, when you insert the bobbin into the winder....... that way it starts all the way to the right and winds even and smooth for the entire spool! good luck, I love mine! |
very sweet lady. and you are a lucky one!!!!
|
Love the Old Lady!!
