I thought with everyone posting photos of their trusty older machines, I would do so likewise. She is a 1950 Singer 128-23 whatever that means. She runs like a dream, but is NO FEATHERWEIGHT!!! She has a vibrating shuttle bobbin case with long, skinny bobbins. I am still learning to wind one correctly. She belonged to the great grandmother of my daughter-in-law. DIL doesn't sew. I probably should take her to have her checked out and see about getting new wiring that is safe.

I like your old lady. I think I have one in a closet somewhere. I must dig her out to check out her condition.

Susan, do you suppose that might make her willing to learn to quilt? Neither of my DILs sew, but #1 did a little sewing before she married into this wacky family. #2 DIL doesn't have time to sew. She's too busy reminding DS to take care of himself - he's a brittle Type I diabetic who has seizures at the drop of a hat. The machine was her great grandmother's. What I really wanted was her treadle, but couldn't find any info about it 10 years ago. I wanted to buy it from her GF. I can't remember the brand, but not a familiar one and the internet just wasn't what it is today. It was Beatuy something or something Beauty. The top opened to the side & had a chain attached that pulled the machine out & up. Was all in tact. GF died right after we moved to New Mexico & DS forgot that I had been interested in the treadle. I guess it wasn't meant to be.

absolutely, getting her checked out and wired so you can enjoy this beauty. Don't take any chances! Your DIL is wonderful to let you have this.

My mother has one of those in her attic, she says I can have it. It is the machine I started sewing on. I have to talk to her, soon. Do you plan on using it?

Yes, I have used it several times, but not to do an entire quilt on. I have been winding the bobbins by hand as I can't figure out how to get the thread to stay put before I start to wind. It's probably something so very simple that I'll laugh so hard I'll wet my undies! :)

I don't have the case key, but there are several (actually lots) for sale on Ebay. I have a Singer fix-it guy around the corner from me. I'll be taking her to him and will ask about more bobbins and a key.
