I typically hang a flannel sheet, using worn out sewing machine needles, on a wall and work on that. My problem is my dogs and their tails coming along and knocking my pieces off the wall. It is one way to have a design wall that's portable and storable although the tri-fold board is a good idea for runners and smaller pieces.

I like your idea. I have a permanet Wall, but like last week I was working on another quilt and I still had my last quilt top on the wall so I covered that quilt with batting and started putting up my new quilt blocks...Your idea would have worked for me then... so it's something to keep in mind..Thanks
