So I'm FINALLY getting back into finishing my son's quilt ( my very first quilt too) and am at the point of putting borders on it to make it bed size. The edges of the quilt are slightly off (all squares don't line up evenly), so I tried folding it up and cut it to make it even with my June Taylor slot ruler.

I sewed on my first border, then second before I realized that there was a section where the first border didn't catch my squares....So I undid the borders and cut the main part of the quilt again and reattached my border. Now the last blue square is too narrow and the quilt its angled inside. My husband says its not noticeable, but I know he's just being nice and wants me to just hurry up and finish.
There has to be an easier way!! Please help me!! What can I do in the future to not have the problem?? Is it the ruler? Maybe I'm folding it too many times when I want to trim the edges? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What can I do to fix the quilt? Should redo the side squares? I'm afraid to touch it now. I know when I'm tired and working on it I tend to make more mistakes. I'm so close to finishing the top, have one more border...yet so far away.....

That's your first quilt???
It's wonderful!!!!!!!!! I really can't see anything wrong with it!
I'm with hubby on this one :D
You did a GREAT job!

sueisallaboutquilts 01-11-2011 06:03 PM

double post!

ssnare 01-11-2011 06:04 PM

It is not that noticeable. Finish it the way it is. Then you will be free to start on something new. One of the instructors of a class I took, said she puts at least one mistake into every quilt to make it personal. Then she does not tell anyone what that mistake is. Usually no one notices.

Up North 01-11-2011 06:06 PM

It sure looks good to me!! Keep on keepen on!

Lindsey 01-11-2011 06:08 PM

there is a saying about a galloping horse. No I wouldn't change it. we are all our own worst critic. You really can't notice it..

Stitchnripper 01-11-2011 06:09 PM

It's fabulous for your first quilt!! I think the experts will weigh in, but I don't fold my quilts when I am squaring them up. You could also google squaring up a quilt. Keep on quilting. You are doing a great job.

deema 01-11-2011 06:10 PM

I only noticed it because I was specifically looking for it! It looks great!

cjomomma 01-11-2011 06:20 PM

I think it look great. If you didn't mention it I would not have looked for it. Go ahead and finish it as is. Your DH is right!!

sewingsuz 01-11-2011 06:20 PM

It is great. there is always a mistake in every quilt somewhere. Dont do anything else to it. It is darling.

I read that the Amish do this on purpose because God is the only perfect one. Anybody else hear this?

purple_butterfly 01-11-2011 06:28 PM

Great first quilt  . Finish it as it is then you can look back on it in years to come and see how much you've improved. It's not that noticeable anyway. Well done, be proud. :D

oma66 01-11-2011 06:30 PM

Nothing is perfect and if you are looking for P E R F E C T you will kill yourself trying to acheive it. We are all trying for perfection, and that is not the same thing as PERFECT. I say let it go, put on the third border and stand back and admire your first quilt. Your son is not going to be looking for imperfections, he is going to be loving the quilt his mom made for him. Isn't that what is most important? The quilt is wonderful and the colors are great...you have done a beautiful job on the quilt.

Perhaps it was the folding that caused your problems. Are you squaring up each square as you complete it? Are you pressing each square before you square it up? These are steps that help me so much.

Well said. Totally agree.

Yes, in fact I love reading quilt history and it was not only the Amish who did that.

JulieR 01-11-2011 06:38 PM

Oh this quilt is just darling! Congrats on your first!

(Psst - I still can't figure out what you're talking about, so I vote to keep moving forward. ;))

Vicki W 01-11-2011 06:40 PM

Nice job, enjoy it and don't stress. :)

liviamarie3 01-11-2011 08:06 PM

Thanks for the advice, this board has really helped keep me grounded. LOL I think I tend to zone in on something trying to be the perfectionist and forget the whole reason for making it in the first place! I need to hurry up and finish so he has something warm to sleep with! Thanks again for giving me the push I needed to keep going forward!

kathdavis 01-11-2011 08:11 PM

Awesome job! Some little boy is going to be very happy. You did a great job. Finish it up and get started on #2.

raptureready 01-11-2011 08:17 PM

Years from now your son won't remember a mistake, only that you made a quilt for him. Don't agonize over it, that only takes the fun out, just finish it and let him play with it, sleep under it, roll up in it, and love it.

akrogirl 01-11-2011 08:51 PM

I have to agree with everyone else. I think you did a great job with your first quilt

Jim 01-11-2011 08:54 PM

LOOKS like it was made with lots of Love...Id finish it the way it is...its not a noticeable mistake

jemma 01-11-2011 11:19 PM

oma66 said it well--a quilt made with loving care is a treasure

AnnieH 01-11-2011 11:25 PM

What a fabulous and personal quilt, particularly for your first. Youtube is amazing for tips on squaring up etc (for next time). It looks amazing to me.

BrendaK 01-11-2011 11:41 PM

 Looks great. You should be proud I know that your son will be. My first quilt was for my grandson and I felt that there were many mistakes. I also tied it because I have trouble getting the quilt in my machine and he loves it. He also loves touching the ties. He now thinks that I am an awesome quilt maker. (I am not but I'm working on it and I will not tell him anything different).

I think it was on this forum I found a mention of using a carpenter's metal square. I have one of DH's and did like suggested, washed it well and can now use it to help square nearly anything, wood or fabric. It covers a lot of the lap quilts
and would sure help a bigger one.

Homespun 01-13-2011 04:32 AM

It looks great to me.

rootyr 01-13-2011 04:33 AM

Awesome!!

thequilteddove 01-13-2011 04:37 AM

I agree, it's not really noticable. Slap on that border, quilt it up so your son can love it to shred :)

ddrobins1956 01-13-2011 04:42 AM

It's great! You know, everyone is allowed a mistake or two on a quilt. The Amish do it on purpose, as nothing here on earth is perfect. I love it and I know Tommy will too.

GrammyX3 01-13-2011 04:44 AM

looks great your son will love it because you made it and when hes older he'll love it even more. So finish it and let your son have a hug from your heart to sleep under every night.

ITotally agree also! I think you did a great job for your first quilt!!

I can't tell anything is wrong with it. I like it and think you have done a great job. Your son will love it and be none the wiser. It was made with love-he'll love it. :)

craftyone27 01-13-2011 04:53 AM

It is really not as noticeable as you think! The quilt is adorable and your son will love it!! Just a suggestion, I would not fold the quilt when you square up in the future. Happy Quilting!

shopaholic97 01-13-2011 05:28 AM

Looks good to me

eimay 01-13-2011 06:02 AM

I think it looks great, and so will your son.

Looks good to me--and I bet it will to you in a day or two! It is amazing how our "mistakes" seem to just disappear "overnight". We are always our own worst critics.

Poakie 01-13-2011 06:45 AM

I think it looks great!

Yes, in fact I love reading quilt history and it was not only the Amish who did that.

This was a tradition by lots (most?) quilters in the 1800's and early 1900's. Even the best, most experienced quilters would put a mistake----usually a pretty obvious one----in their tops because only God is perfect. Somewhere I have a picture of a beautiful quilt that's about from 1870 or so---it's bunches of grapes, perfectly appliqued on blocks with some green stems and leaves, and all of the bunches are the same deep blue-purple except that ONE grape is bright red.

sidmona 01-13-2011 06:49 AM

Looks great to me - just finish it up. I have a sign in my sewing room that reads "Remember only God is perfect, our quilts don't need to be."
