There is a little story behind this quilt. My first one was a log cabin for my mother and then I started this one in a class I was taking. It is Eleanor Burns Jewel Box Quilt. When I bought the fabric for this I wanted it to be for my son and didn't choose "jewel tone" colors. When the instructor saw my colors she made a comment that crushed me. So I tried to finish this, but just couldn't knowing I had not followed the rules. I ended up not working on this one for 10 years... actuallyI quit making any kind of quilts.

Now that I am quilting again I decided to finish this one...and you know what I really like my colors! So there teacher!!! Glad I got past that one!

Neena 07-04-2011 03:00 PM

Beautiful quilt! So glad you finished it!

sarahelloyd 07-04-2011 03:00 PM

She was obviously not a good teacher. I just love the colours in your quilt.

Jingle 07-04-2011 03:05 PM

Beautiful, I like the colors. Please keep making quilts, you have a knack for it.
A real shame people say things to quilters that keep them from making quilts. Some opinions should not be written nor said aloud.
I am glad you finished this up. What a shame you didn't quilt for 10 yrs. You just need to make up for lost time.

farscapegal 07-04-2011 03:05 PM

She was not a very good teacher at all.

The quilt is lovely.

Very pretty whether you followed rules or not. I love it. I love
that pattern.

Linda71 07-04-2011 03:07 PM

I like the colors

BeckyL 07-04-2011 03:10 PM

I really like your colors too and your quilt. Some people were never meant to be teachers.

stichinluvr 07-04-2011 03:13 PM

I love the colors! And who made her the quilt police?

Sassylass 07-04-2011 03:16 PM

Wow...think she was jealous of your colours..they are just perfect!!!Glad you started quilting again!!! Thank you for sharing.

quiltsRfun 07-04-2011 03:32 PM

I love jewel box. Yours is beautiful!

Vivian Ketron 07-04-2011 04:00 PM

I love your colors. Glad you finished it. It is beautiful.

arkansasquilter123 07-04-2011 04:00 PM

It's your quilt.....you can use whatever colors you choose. I love your colors. Anyway, who wants to be like everyone else?

debcavan 07-04-2011 04:08 PM

Gorgeous. This may not be what the instructor had in mind but it is gorgeous and not a carbon copy but an original. I love your colors. Yes a little pink for a man.

And shame on that teacher who couldn't handle a student who thinks independently and creatively.

jeaninmaine 07-04-2011 04:08 PM

I like your colors, some teachers can't handle it if you use a little imagination and come up with your own interpretation of a design rather than doing a carbon copy of theirs. I didn't think it would be Eleanor Burns because she likes it when people do their own colors.

fatsewcat 07-04-2011 04:12 PM

I think it looks great. . . Don't worry about what others say and do what makes you happy!

irishrose 07-04-2011 04:14 PM

Jewel Box is only one of the names of that pattern. Eleanor Burns' online video start out by showing a stack of quilts in this pattern made in a variety of fabrics. She calls them all Jewel Box. Some are quite pastel. I'm thinking of the one in the 30s fabrics.

Yours is lovely. Mine is coming along. It's my job for this week. Nothing is ever too pink. Keep it and make your son a new one.

Mariposa 07-04-2011 04:21 PM

Lovely quilt! Am glad that you rose above the comment from the teacher. :)

watson's mom 07-04-2011 04:30 PM

Love your quilt, love the colours. your changes to the colour scheme make it unique. Thank you for sharing.

isnthatodd 07-04-2011 04:41 PM

How boring it would be if everyone used the same colors! Yours is beautiful.

Teddybear Lady 07-04-2011 04:43 PM

I guess there really are "quilt police"! Who cares, it looks just lovely.

SewingBee 07-04-2011 04:44 PM

Well done--apparently your "teacher" never heard the rule that if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it! I think it turned out quite well!

laurlync 07-04-2011 04:49 PM

Sorry your teacher made you feel so bad. I think your quilt is very pretty! Glad you finished it.

grandmajuki 07-04-2011 04:55 PM

I love it too... the very reason I'm not a thimbleberries fan is how many quilts do you think are out there EXACTLY alike? and, i'm not much of a county fan... that happened to me once to.. .mystery quilt...hate them because I just don't like not knowing what fabric to choose.. then at a retreat once a lady told me after looking at my fabric that I didn't know how to choose fabric... so I said... that's exactly why I'll never do a mystery quilt again.. guess what it was the prettiest one there!!!! She didn't apologize but she did tell me it was pretty.. sometimes we need to remember to say something nice or nothing at all!

peaceandjoy 07-04-2011 04:58 PM

Might not be jewel tones, but it's beautiful. There's nothing that says jewel box quilts have to be done in jewel tones. I think the other name is buckeye beauty?

emerald46 07-04-2011 05:38 PM

Teacher should have kept her mouth shut!! The quilt is gorgeous!

joeyoz 07-04-2011 05:38 PM

Your attempt looks pretty awesome to me. :D :D

bisseau 07-04-2011 05:55 PM

beautiful quilt!

redquilter 07-04-2011 06:16 PM

I love the colors. She was out of line to make any kind of negative comment at all. Good teachers encourage - not discourage. Glad you finally got back to it. It's beautiful.

sisLH 07-04-2011 06:42 PM

It may not be the 'bold' colors she wanted, but jewels come in all colors -and your quilt is beautiful. Hopefully after 10 years, you are at a point in your life where you make what you feel and disregard poor manners.

Tweety2911 07-04-2011 06:46 PM

Beautiful quilt and so happy you decided to finish your quilt. I look forward to seeing more wonderful quilts.

Cottontop 07-04-2011 06:52 PM

What rules. There are no rules, just pick what you think will be nice for the person who will receive it. I say, very lucky son.

rushdoggie 07-04-2011 06:55 PM

Its a beautiful quilt!

QuiltnNan 07-04-2011 07:15 PM

the colors are wonderful.

connie d 07-04-2011 07:50 PM

I love your quilt and the colors are great. I'm so sorry you went through that with that teacher. Sometimes people don't know how to encourage the ones they are teaching unfortunately. I am so glad you are back at it. I'll be looking forward to seeing more quilts. Have you decided on a quilt for your son?? :):):)

Yep - working on that!!! I have made quite of few quilts since the beginning of this one. It was interesting to finish an earlier quilt - I can actually see that I have improved my skills. I didn't fix any of my mistakes either. I think I will keep this one for me. A good reminder of a lesson learned.
