I have finally created a quilt from the large print of Corvettes that I have been puzzling over. Now I am wondering what type of border to put on it. I thought I would go with black, but now I am not so sure. And what size??

This quilt will be auctioned off at a charity auction at our next Corvette car show. My last one, a baby quilt, sold for $240. I am still a beginning quilter, and that quilt looked like a beginner did it. I want this one to end up looking much better. All of the folks at the auction will be Corvette owners, not quilters, if that makes a difference.

Any suggestions? Thanks. (I think I have attached the picture correctly. You will have to ignore the quilt examiner. He just would not be moved, and I was too soft hearted to forbid him to be there, as he is part of all my projects. :) )

It looks great. I think I would go with two border, gray and then black.

nwm50 11-20-2010 04:26 PM

i agree with grannyW5....that is a nice corvette quilt !

Tippy 11-20-2010 04:28 PM

I agree.. a narrow gray border then a wide black border. perhaps with the word corvette quilted into the border repeatedly. Or maybe the word corvette alternating with chevy logo..

Ramona Byrd 11-20-2010 04:37 PM

What about a tiny black streak between all the squares? Seems to me it would make them pop!! Then gray and then black all around the quilt itself. Perhaps a thin black and thicker gray.

It's a lovely quilt and I'll bet some owner of a much loved Corvette will outbid anyone else and take it home and love it forever.

Neat quilt. My husband and I love corvettes and belong to a corvette club. Where did you get this material? I agree with the others, narrow gray border and wider black.

julia58 11-20-2010 04:54 PM

Nice quilt, and a huge inspector you have. Both are so pretty.

ccb2200 11-20-2010 05:08 PM

I agree with everyone else. A Grey and Black borders. Nice quilt.

amma 11-20-2010 05:11 PM

I am going to go a different way... blue and then black :D:D:D

redvette54 11-20-2010 05:14 PM

How about checkerboard, like the racing flags?

Dina 11-20-2010 05:17 PM

I appreciate all of the responses. JT, I got my fabric on ebay. I actually found it with red and gold backgrounds, as well as the black. I bought all three, as I will be the "quilt lady" for this yearly auction for years and years. :)

I actually have some blue fabric, Amma, so that might work as well. I have gray and black too, so tomorrow I will do some experimenting and see what I like best.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I wouldn't mind more, if anyone else has an idea.

Yes, my quilt inspector (named Hot Rod) is a big cat. He weighs 16 pounds. Once upon a time he was a feral cat, but no more. He makes my 50 x 70 inch quilt top look small.

I agree!

Your quilt is awesome. I love the pattern you went with. Sets them off perfectly. I agree with a gray and then a black border. Great job.

sandyo 11-20-2010 07:39 PM

I also think some blue will bring out the cars.

Dani 11-20-2010 07:39 PM

I agree with Amma! I think a touch of blue would just set it off so well.

piano keys in black and white, with an orange sashing.

isewhappy 11-20-2010 10:39 PM

I didn't read all the replies so this might be a dup. What about three borders - the first black, the second black and white to look like the white stripes on a road, then the third black. So it looks like a road??? Well, it looks nice in my head...LOL

irishrose 11-20-2010 11:00 PM

Narrow black, then wide blue with a black binding. Gray doesn't do it for me. You could do a checkerboard just before the binding with the red, blue, gray and black + white? I did one on the quilt I just posted because the quilt came out too small. It wasn't hard and adds a nice touch.

joann hussey 11-21-2010 03:54 AM

I would do 1 inch blue, than black outer boarder, a sharp quilt

joyce888 11-21-2010 04:59 AM

How about the checkered racing flag fabric? It comes in both wavy checks and the straight checks. You can find it at JoAnns and Hancocks. Then a second border or binding of one of the main colors in the quilt.

Pegleg 11-21-2010 05:09 AM

I would add a thin red border and then to make this really pop I would make a black and white checkerboard border. It would look great with squares no larger that 2 inches. Make 3 rows of squares for the checkerboard. Sometimes you can even find this type of fabric if you don't want to actually piece the checkerboard.

I have used black and white checkerboard borders around a number of quilts and they have always turned out special.

sandpat 11-21-2010 05:59 AM

I totally agree with Pegleg...I was reading and thinking...why has no one said Red??? I think that would make it explode with life and then the border that Peg suggested would be great!

You seem to have gotten enough suggestions that you can make several quilts and try them all

Dina 11-21-2010 06:56 AM

You are right! I have many ideas floating around in my head right now! I love this. I can't wait to have time to play with all the ideas. Thanks everyone!

CarrieAnne 11-21-2010 06:57 AM

Very nice quilt!

Chasing Hawk 11-21-2010 07:56 AM

Where is the quilt? All I see is cat......LOL

I agree with several here, a nice grey and black border.

Quilter Day-by-Day 11-21-2010 10:45 AM

I agree grey and then black but also the race flag of checkerbord would be good too.

IBQUILTIN 11-21-2010 11:19 AM

How about a narrow border in either the blue or red, and then another of the checkered flag?

kriscraft99 11-21-2010 11:23 AM

that is exactly what I was thinking!

This is what I was thinking also .... why not use a narrow border of red (maybe red piping instead of flat strip?) to make it all pop? Or blue piping if the red is too much for you? Could still use a black and white check if you like. Oh my, so many choices ... good thing you have more corvette fabric. I just put some with a light blue background on the back of a small wallhanging made for my husband's birthday. He looked at the back more than the front!!!

Iluv2quilt 11-21-2010 11:40 AM

Very nice!! I think to add a gray, then a black border, possibly binding w/red.

Yes.... a thin (1 inch finished) blue inner border and a black outer border would be great.

TexasSunshine 11-21-2010 01:40 PM

I agree with others, gray and then black.

nanamoe 11-21-2010 01:47 PM

Hi, great quilt. How about a black border and then a black and white racing check. Nanamoe

Ditto - I like your idea. That was exactly what I was thinking.

ngabrielle 11-21-2010 02:15 PM

Hi, luv it, looks great. I would like to propose a black and white checkers (squares) for the bindings. I would love to make one for my dh. He has a corvette. Can you tell me where you found the fabric? Much appreciated.

I like the blue border idea too. Then add black on the outside.

gramquilter2 11-21-2010 03:58 PM

I am a corvette owner too, and my suggestion is a small red border and a larger black. Sports cars after all should be red!!! LOL
