I have finally created a quilt from the large print of Corvettes that I have been puzzling over. Now I am wondering what type of border to put on it. I thought I would go with black, but now I am not so sure. And what size??
This quilt will be auctioned off at a charity auction at our next Corvette car show. My last one, a baby quilt, sold for $240. I am still a beginning quilter, and that quilt looked like a beginner did it. I want this one to end up looking much better. All of the folks at the auction will be Corvette owners, not quilters, if that makes a difference. Any suggestions? Thanks. (I think I have attached the picture correctly. You will have to ignore the quilt examiner. He just would not be moved, and I was too soft hearted to forbid him to be there, as he is part of all my projects. :) ) |
It looks great. I think I would go with two border, gray and then black.
i agree with grannyW5....that is a nice corvette quilt !
I agree.. a narrow gray border then a wide black border. perhaps with the word corvette quilted into the border repeatedly. Or maybe the word corvette alternating with chevy logo..
What about a tiny black streak between all the squares? Seems to me it would make them pop!! Then gray and then black all around the quilt itself. Perhaps a thin black and thicker gray.
It's a lovely quilt and I'll bet some owner of a much loved Corvette will outbid anyone else and take it home and love it forever. |
Neat quilt. My husband and I love corvettes and belong to a corvette club. Where did you get this material? I agree with the others, narrow gray border and wider black.
Nice quilt, and a huge inspector you have. Both are so pretty.
I agree with everyone else. A Grey and Black borders. Nice quilt.
I am going to go a different way... blue and then black :D:D:D
How about checkerboard, like the racing flags?
I appreciate all of the responses. JT, I got my fabric on ebay. I actually found it with red and gold backgrounds, as well as the black. I bought all three, as I will be the "quilt lady" for this yearly auction for years and years. :)
I actually have some blue fabric, Amma, so that might work as well. I have gray and black too, so tomorrow I will do some experimenting and see what I like best. Thanks for all the suggestions. I wouldn't mind more, if anyone else has an idea. Yes, my quilt inspector (named Hot Rod) is a big cat. He weighs 16 pounds. Once upon a time he was a feral cat, but no more. He makes my 50 x 70 inch quilt top look small. |

I agree! |
Your quilt is awesome. I love the pattern you went with. Sets them off perfectly. I agree with a gray and then a black border. Great job.
I also think some blue will bring out the cars.
I agree with Amma! I think a touch of blue would just set it off so well.

piano keys in black and white, with an orange sashing.
I didn't read all the replies so this might be a dup. What about three borders - the first black, the second black and white to look like the white stripes on a road, then the third black. So it looks like a road??? Well, it looks nice in my head...LOL
Narrow black, then wide blue with a black binding. Gray doesn't do it for me. You could do a checkerboard just before the binding with the red, blue, gray and black + white? I did one on the quilt I just posted because the quilt came out too small. It wasn't hard and adds a nice touch.
I would do 1 inch blue, than black outer boarder, a sharp quilt
How about the checkered racing flag fabric? It comes in both wavy checks and the straight checks. You can find it at JoAnns and Hancocks. Then a second border or binding of one of the main colors in the quilt.
I would add a thin red border and then to make this really pop I would make a black and white checkerboard border. It would look great with squares no larger that 2 inches. Make 3 rows of squares for the checkerboard. Sometimes you can even find this type of fabric if you don't want to actually piece the checkerboard.
I have used black and white checkerboard borders around a number of quilts and they have always turned out special. |
I totally agree with Pegleg...I was reading and thinking...why has no one said Red??? I think that would make it explode with life and then the border that Peg suggested would be great!
You seem to have gotten enough suggestions that you can make several quilts and try them all  |
You are right! I have many ideas floating around in my head right now! I love this. I can't wait to have time to play with all the ideas. Thanks everyone!
Very nice quilt!
Where is the quilt? All I see is cat......LOL
I agree with several here, a nice grey and black border. |
I agree grey and then black but also the race flag of checkerbord would be good too.
How about a narrow border in either the blue or red, and then another of the checkered flag?
that is exactly what I was thinking!

Hi, luv it, looks great. I would like to propose a black and white checkers (squares) for the bindings. I would love to make one for my dh. He has a corvette. Can you tell me where you found the fabric? Much appreciated.

I am a corvette owner too, and my suggestion is a small red border and a larger black. Sports cars after all should be red!!! LOL
