This is a quilt that I am making for my daughter. The lady bug blocks that I created myself did not end up the size I thought they would be. I used quilters grid and I do not think I will do that again. I think I would piece them together with out the girid if I had to do it again. Anyways I had to add extra borders because of the blocks being shorter.

Ok long story short after I do the braided border on the ends should I add another border and if so what color or should I just end it with that?!?! I will be using the red for the binding.

tlrnhi 05-27-2010 06:55 PM

My opinion?
I'd put a border about an inch wider than the braid using that polka dot fabric. Then use the red binding.
I think it's really cute!

I do have to agree. It would give the quilt a beautiful finished look. I do love your quilt. Those ladybugs are so cute. Great job. Thanks for sharing.

wvdek 05-27-2010 07:03 PM

I agree with Terri. Really cute.

Leota 05-27-2010 07:04 PM

i agree with Terri
Cute quilt

bjaayoung 05-27-2010 07:05 PM

Are you talking about the fabric that almost looks white with the red dots? It did not turn out well in color it is actually green with lady bugs on it. Guess I need to take better pics:)

I also did not mean for it to turn out as such a dark quilt but the black patterned fabric had lady bugs in it so I had to have it.

Then I decided to do the braided edge and wanted to do it with 3 colors so now it is a little dark.

That would be perfect! I LOVE this quilt.

I'm kinda fond of ladybugs :-)

grammyp 05-27-2010 07:09 PM

I think I would use a narrow border of the darker (black) with the bugs then the red binding. I think it would give it a nice symmetry.

sueisallaboutquilts 05-27-2010 07:16 PM

What a darling quilt! Thanks for sharing :)

amma 05-27-2010 07:23 PM

A border with the lady bug material would lighten it up
I think this quilt is adorable!!! :D:D:D

cjomomma 05-27-2010 07:29 PM

I have no suggestions for you but I love the quilt.

ctack2 05-27-2010 07:41 PM

I would put a narrow black border on the outside of the braid like the one on the inside of the braid.

I would put a black binding on the braid.

Because it would pick up the black of the ladybugs in the center, and the black in the braid.

Depends on how big you want it to be and how much fabric you have available.

Lori B. 05-27-2010 08:02 PM

Love the quilt!

Linda B 05-27-2010 08:16 PM

Ditto what Ctack2 said.

dkabasketlady 05-27-2010 08:30 PM

I agree with Ctack2 and gorgeous quilt!!

I think repeating the smaller black border next to the braid and then the light green lady bug fabric the same size of the braid would lighten it up. Then bind with the dark fabric.

Example of what I'm saying.

I would put pale green corner stones & just add the braid to the top & bottom, binding it in the red as you'd planned. Beautiful quilt, love ladybugs!

Jim's Gem 05-28-2010 08:54 AM

Sounds you have some great ideas from everyone. The quilt is quite cute.
Welcome to the board from Southern California!
I take it either you or your DH is in the Marines!
I grew up in South Orange county and have been past Camp Pendelton many many times!!!

bjaayoung 05-28-2010 09:24 AM

Yes my husband is in the Marines!! I am a proud Marine wife and a Former Air Force Reservist.

franie 05-28-2010 09:28 AM

It is an adorable quilt--very attractive. Will you put the braid all the way around? If so something to end the process and in my opinion should be something dark. This way the inside with the lady bugs pop. I think anything would look good because it is a good looking quilt as is.

i agree w/ ctack 2, also. very cute quilt

Tcharlie 05-29-2010 05:09 AM

I would also like to suggest a black border; but I would also add some black antlers on each lady bug at their head. You could hand embroidery them on with several threads or use the satin stitch on the machine.

mimee4 05-29-2010 05:38 AM

I like the idea like Ctack2 said. No matter what you do, you can't miss. This is soooo cute.

quiltingfan 05-29-2010 08:26 AM

Would add the braided look at the top and bottom and finish it like others suggest. Love the lady bugs, you did a great job.

amorerm 05-29-2010 10:13 AM

I would ad another 1" border to mirror image the fabroc on the other side of the braid border, then a wider black border. Which fabric are using for the backing? You can bring it up around the front edge (maybe)

I agree with this suggestion - it keeps your braid from bleeding into the border - you could bind in either the red or black.

See why envy appliquers. I never noticed the antenia missing. It would make a great touch to lady bugs.

maryb119 05-29-2010 11:15 AM

I would use a border of the pokadot the same width as the one there now and then add a border of the black and bind it in red. Its a beautiful quilt. thanks for sharing.

I finished putting the borders on! I had bought the red fabric for the back but I am starting to think that I should use the green with the lady bugs. What do you think?

Farm Quilter 05-29-2010 06:44 PM

I'd put a border about an inch wider than the braid using that polka dot fabric. Then use the red binding.
I think it's really cute!

I agree with this idea!!

canmitch1971 05-29-2010 06:59 PM

I would use a narrow strip of the red and then a border made out of the black fabric with the ladybugs same as the sashing.

sandpat 05-30-2010 05:52 AM

Very cute quilt!!! I love it finished out with the braid...I'd go with the green with the bugs on the back. :D

iltoaz 05-30-2010 06:22 AM

Love the quilt - the ladybugs are soooooo cute!

cbuchanan 05-31-2010 08:08 AM

I don't think it looks dark at all because of the contrasts. I would put a black border and bind in red. Love the braided border.

Sewnique 06-01-2010 08:11 PM

How did you do the braided borders? Do you mind sharing the size you cut the pieces? Thanks, in advance!

roseOfsharon 06-01-2010 08:13 PM

That is going to be one cute quilt once you have finished! the suggestion (first) sounds very good to me!

I agree totally. I love using the braided borders but for stability always add another wider border as the borders get a lot of tugging and pulling and the braid may or may not tolerate it. Hopefully you have enough fabric to do the above as it's a beautiful quilt. You've done a great job on it as is.
