The diagonal cuts are made in different directions. You can cut the two squares into triangles and sew them back together (the A to A and B to B). Or you can sew the two squares together in the usual method of making HST blocks first square, right side up, yellow, orange purple Second square, right side down, purple, orange, yellow. You have to make sure the middle seam, between the orange and yellow, are nested so they match up nicely when you sew and cut them apart. You use the same method for the orange and blue HST blocks (background squares) - just check your orientation when either cutting the diagonals, or placing two squares together. |

What am I missing here?? The only one I see is your 'B' on the right side of your diagram. It is just turned different ways. I don't see where the other pieces fit at all???
Maybe you make 2 sets and intermingle the blocks for 2 finished blocks.??????????????? |
Using the measurements of 4, 2, 2, would give you a 32" block.
Using the measurements of 2, 1, 1, would give you a 16" bock. In either case you would make 16 blocks of the star color and 16 of the background color then cut in half diagonally and use half for one block and the other half for another block. 2 finished blocks like the top picture. It's very pretty. |
Love this. Can't wait to try it.

make a block using 3 strips: 1 is 1/2 the block + 1/4" seam....the next 2 are 1/4 of the block adding 1/2" seam
cut them in 1/2 diagonally....arrange to make the pattern shown. or is it 4 strips, each 1/4 of the total width???can't quite tell. the block, if using 4 same size strips would be the 'Fence Row"....then cut in 1/2 diagonally. |
Sorry looks great, but can't help you.

I finally found time to try this block . I sewed the strips 4"-2"-2", cut in squares and tried to match A and A , and B and B. There is no way I can make that into a square that matches up. Could someone please show how to make A and A into the right square. Would so appreciate any and all help. Thanks in advance. Enjoy this board so much.

I thought I posted these way back then - I know I made them up that same night.
Sorry for the confusing 1st graphic - I was having a fight with (#&$(# Paint and EQ at the time, and I didn't have time/patience to go back and fix it. The warm blocks in the first graphic should have been reversed (so instead I put those diagonal lines so you can see which blocks get paired up). I might have changed the numbering from the prior posts - I'm not going back to check. But take a minute or two and it should make sense. For each star, you're only using one half of each of the warm and cool blocks. The block in the op is Layout #1 - I outlined the pieces in blue. The remaining pieces make Layout #3. If you make all four blocks and cut them as shown, you get all 4 layout colorings. Jeez. I delete one picture and now it's an attached image. How annoying. |
I love this site, so many helpful quilters. Sorry I don't have an answer for you, but I am taking advantage of the answers posted.

A picture says a thousand words. I like MST's explanation.
