I need an opinion on which fabric to use for the border on this quilt.

Dark green diagonal stripe, Choice #2

This is the whole quilt

This fabric will probably be the backing, I have plenty of it Choice #1

lfw045 02-03-2009 10:41 AM

Definitely the first one.....in my opinion. It makes it pop!

One more choice

I have enough of this to do the back in as well. Choice #6

collettakay 02-03-2009 11:29 AM

I think I like #3.

ruthie 02-03-2009 11:31 AM

I think I would go with the last blue one. It really ties the whole quilt together and makes it brighter too.

Scottie 02-03-2009 11:32 AM

I like the first one...it gives the quilt a special wow...

FancyFoot 02-03-2009 11:43 AM

I like #1

sewjoyce 02-03-2009 11:52 AM

I think I like #7 the best. The blue really makes all the other colors pop

redquilter 02-03-2009 11:57 AM

Gorgeous quilt. I like #3

Izy 02-03-2009 01:17 PM

I like the last one...but I prefer it when the border doesn't match any of the edge pieces  :D What about the colour of the stars??? :D

Edit: Just been back for a second look...I defo think a light inner border using the same light fabric of the stars...then a dark one to finish :D Just my personal choice of course....you go with what you think best :D

Barbm 02-03-2009 01:27 PM

How about a skinny border of white and then #6?

patricej 02-03-2009 01:30 PM

either #1 or #5

Mousie 02-03-2009 01:33 PM

I agree with Izzy about a light border, then i would put #6 on the outside. I had to look and look at first, leaning toward #1, but when i saw the blue...and with a lighter border first to bring out the lights in the center...YEAH! that's my 2 cents

Evelynquilts 02-03-2009 02:01 PM

I agree with the others who said a small border first~color of stars~ then the last one :-o

lyndawn 02-03-2009 02:15 PM

I like #4 the reddish colored one.

Lynette

mary quite contrary 02-03-2009 02:17 PM

I like one of the darker colors it frames it and makes it look finished. I always like a thin inner border followed by a wide outer.

Mary

Mousie 02-03-2009 02:20 PM

two more cents...you know, to help the economy, lol...
maybe print out your choices...tape in a circle at eye level. Leave the room, and walk in, head down and when you look up, the first one that 'jumps' out at you.
A lady I used to work with gave me a very good piece of advice one time when I was stumped by two choices:
pick one and if you keep feeling uncomfortable with it, you know you really wanted the other one.
I really use this as a rule of thumb, and it has worked for over 30 years. I was five then, LOL!!!...and I have some beachfront property cheap too!!!

Jim's Gem 02-03-2009 03:30 PM

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try to get a picture of the lt tan narrow border with #1 and #6, when I get home from work. I usually use a narrow border on my quilts but the pattern for this one didn't use the narrow border, just the one at 5.5" unfinshed. I could also pull a fabric that is not in the quilt and see how that looks too. But too many choices makes it harder to choose!!!

Mousie 02-03-2009 03:40 PM

I know what you mean by having too many choices. The last one looks great as is! but in the end you will know what you like, we are just the cheering section...sometimes making a lot of noise, lol!

Jim's Gem 02-03-2009 03:44 PM

Lynette, that color is purple. The colors are purple, blue and green with lt tan stars. Purple is my favorite color, but I don't know if I like the purple border that much. I may contrast my choice in the binding, we'll see, I'm still undecided

Here is a picture using a narrow border with the lt tan as well as a picture of the pattern

Choice #6

Picture of the pattern. Sorry the flash makes a blob on the pattern. Took several pictures and they all turned out this way

sewjoyce 02-03-2009 05:42 PM

Oh wow -- they are both just gorgeous. I really like them both!

Mousie 02-03-2009 05:56 PM

well, now that I see it with the tan border...going to change my mind. I like the first one. The tan border just goes with both. To me, the tan goes with center, and the blue goes with center, but the tan goes better with the purple print border. that's my vote. good luck. btw, yours is prettier than the pattern. :D

patty48 02-03-2009 06:45 PM

I think you really need a narrow inner border to frame the actual quilt pattern because some of your border choices are also in blocks that touch the wider border and then they end up bleeding into the border.

Did that make any sense? I keep reading it, and I know what I mean. If anyone knows how to explain this better, please feel free to help me out! (LOL)

Anyway, I vote for the tan inner border with the number 1 larger border.

sunflower 02-03-2009 07:43 PM

I like the black or red borders. I think the others are too busy and detract from the beautiful center.

Caroltee 02-03-2009 09:00 PM

 I agree with the small border maybe 2inch and then bind with the last blue. What are you going to back it with? The light color will make it very pretty with the blue binding showing on the edge

Caroltee 02-03-2009 09:02 PM

Choice # 6 looks great

quiltykitty 02-03-2009 09:10 PM

I agree with Izzy about it needing a smaller, lighter colored inner border. Then your choice for the outside border. If you do make the inner border, it just might make your decision easier. It might make one of those fabrics look so good that you will automatically pick it over the rest.

If you still can not decide after putting the inner border on the top, then just come back with updated photos and ask for opinions again.

I can back it with either the blue/green fabric in Choice #1 or the blue "stones" in Choice #6

Lisa T 02-03-2009 11:25 PM

I vote for the color of the stars with another one after that, too.

Izy 02-03-2009 11:51 PM

Gayle, I love the lt tan inner border with a darker border, it's very striking that way :D Are we being any help at all

Lucky Patsy's 02-04-2009 12:16 AM

I'd love the narrow tan border with the #3 wide border.

k3n 02-04-2009 12:29 AM

I like 5, I think it makes the cream stars really shine, maybe with a cream inner border as well?

sewhappy57 02-04-2009 12:59 AM

I have to agree with Izy on this one. :D

k3n 02-04-2009 01:16 AM

I agree with Izy as well (but then I have to keep her sweet so she gets on with her mystery block tute :wink: );

Seriously, I think the tan inner border is a must - I agree with the earlier comment about blocks the same fabric as the border bleeding into it being a bad thing;

I think a darker outer border makes the tan stars pop more!

Can't wait to see how you do it - sure to be great whatever you decide!

Jim's Gem 02-04-2009 12:13 PM

Thanks everyone, I will try and get some work done on it tonight after I get home from work.

pal 02-04-2009 03:25 PM

I'd use the color of the stars for a border, double width of what you've shown and then use the same width again in the dark green.

Joan 02-04-2009 03:31 PM

I agree--skinny border then #6

lass 02-09-2009 06:02 AM

I like the first one. The idea of a smaller inner border than the first border is a good one. I like the first because it adds sparkle and movement.
