I have been working on this for a week or so.. it was from a wall hanging pattern my daughter saw.. I need to make it twin size.;( SO far it is about 36 wide and 62 long..) i just added the trees on bottom yesterday and NEED TO APPLIQUE THEM.
Daughter... wants to add the same up on top............ but I need a lot of width as the over hang is about 14 inches.
Also I need to know.... when you applique it all down do you machine quilt over it all or need to go around the pictures? Never done applique before.

QuiltingIdaho 05-20-2010 08:11 AM

If you have a good machine quilter- you can just have her/him quilt it down- but my preference is to machine appliqué them before quilting it.

I like to put a "blanket" stitch on the edge. But there is... a satin stitch or a zig zag too.

It is easier to do the appliqué prior to piecing it to your quilt top.

I think putting your little trees on the sides would be really cute. do one per block and add to your sides...does this make sense? You could even add another canoe or a few fish. Good Luck!

I love it!! You might think of doing a few simple animal appliques also.. or maybe some simple flowers. I applique with the needle turn type method.. then you can outline quilt the shapes and do some quilting inside or not as you like.. also depending on how close you want the quilting.

hard to see in picture but all but the trees are already appliqued with a couple different stitches,. the blanket being one of them... and I plan to rip the bottom tree panel off and put it on top so willapplique it then.. daughter thinks she would like it on top ( day and have another scene at bottom ( NIGHT) with stars and moon type thing.. sounds cool. I like the tree idea on sides too but have a lot of width to get she was thinking maybe some fling geese as well? it needs to be 39 plus 28 across + 67 across.

It is my first attempt at appliqueing I tried to do a needle turn thing last week .. with no instructions and it was a nightmare lOL>( this seemed easier.. HMM @@ I like the animal idea.. like a bear or a moose ;)>.

sylslight 05-20-2010 10:19 AM

if it were me, to add width, I would add a large brown border, something with a pattern

I need something else in between since it need to go another 30 inches..across that means 39 for bed and 14 or so down each side.. a 15 inch border is too much but I sure plan to make at least an 8..

bearisgray 05-20-2010 10:28 AM

You could use a a four-inch border around the top (in a fabric that reads as one color) - what goes on top of the mattress - and then make 15-inch (or so) borders from one fabric that picks up on the themes of the center of the quilt.

janice4 05-20-2010 10:41 AM

My daughter has asked me to move the trees to the top.. and make another panel across the bottom that is a night scene as opposed to the day scene. and that sounds cool..( stars, moon ?

that would be very cool. So for simplicity sake, maybe add another two rows of the log cabins and the on each side of the trees do mountains? mountains connect with conoeing(sp?) and trees and the color sceme. or maybe rivers all the way down on both the sides?

just trying to inspire you!

martha jo 05-20-2010 11:48 AM

You are the artist. Don't get too carried away with trying to please someone who isn't doing it. Let her make it. That's why I quit making things for others. They have no idea what they are asking. Sorry to preach but it is your work of art.

amma 05-20-2010 01:01 PM

How about a row of tents at the top? Or a couple tents and a couple of trees?

I blanket stitch the appliques down. You can do that as part of the quilting, but it means a lot of manhandling the quilt to go round the appliques. I don't like to quilt over the appliques, just around them in the blocks. It can be a lot of layers to try and quilt through also sometimes, if you were to try and quilt through them.

MamaBear61 05-20-2010 03:10 PM

You can add a blocks with a simple tent or cabin, a dock into water, or birds (geese, ducks) or even a hiking trail and rocks.

QuiltingIdaho 05-20-2010 03:19 PM

ooh, I like the hiking trail, you could be really creative with this.

The pattern is from a wall hanging that is about 12 x 16 I wil go find the book adn tell you more PM me K I had to renlarge it to do this to a twin size. lOL

Delilah 05-21-2010 08:17 AM

My first thought was to add more trees on the sides. How do you feel about putting a first border of flying geese next to the trees before putting on the final border? That way you wouldn't have such a big final border. Sounds like the finished size needs to be at least 70 x 90.

That's what I was thinking. Super job so far. BTW, I would shadow (echo?) quilt around the appliqued pieces and not do an over-all quilt pattern.

Even if it is going to get a lot of use ?

Wow, that really picked it up a notch. Fantastic. You're working it kind of like a round robin. It's ganna be a real masterpiece, Have you thought of trapuntoing the special things like the bears and moose, canoes. I just tried that forthe first time and really was pleased with the results.

kwiltkrazy 05-28-2010 01:05 PM

Trapunto- it's kind of stuffing the pieces you want to stand out.

wildyard 05-28-2010 01:19 PM

Wow Janice that quilt is going to be amazing. I love the night scene you added. And my reaction was exactly like yours.. trap-whating? lol.
We never cease to learn on this fantastic board.
