I agree with you,,sorry daughter. Sounds like she has a great teacher!

black backing gets my vote
I'm going to split the vote here: I like her quilting idea but your idea for grey on the backing.
I would not like a black backing - catches every hair and speck of lint. But I do think it needs to be softeded up with some quilting that is swirly and fluid...not just straight lines.
So far.. its grey backing.... all over design, but, I want grey thread, Lisa likes the idea of yellow thread, with the bumble bee's... i like the butterflies... might have to throw in a couple of those bumble bee's and butterflies in the plain blocks.. so its just not lines going through them...
And I do agree about the black backing every piece of lint would show. I might have her do the all over design and I will do the little critter's... !!! wow this has been so helpful and a great learning experience for my daughter. Thank you to everyone who has commented .. :) |
Gray back with simple quilting.
I'd like to see something wavy like the fabric in the block. I would go for gray backing as well. I like neutrals, and black may fade through to the colors when it's washed. Love your design.
I like the idea of a grey backing and an all over design is perfect with such a busy pattern on the top. I love the quilt though - don't give it away, keep it, it's beautiful.
light gray backing would be my choice
I say grey backing with all over simple design. It is a very attractive quilt top. Good job!
My lip is zipped ... up to YOU to decide, LOL.
Well, I agree with you that the design is so busy that a simple, overall quilting might be the best choice. As to the backing, black would be nice but I don't typically use black solids because they pick up so much lint. Someone suggested grey, which would be nice--or perhaps a black and white stripe?
I'll take it - but I think grey on the back and a meandering would be best - my taste at least - any more would be a waste of effort and not be seen for the dynamic changes in the design - YOU WIN !!
I won't waiste the time to do feathers. They would be lost in the design of the fabric. Either of the other 2 choices would be great, but I prefer the FMQ myself. I think a black binding with yellow piping would set the quilt off nicely, so either backings would work. It's a beautiful quilt.
Sorry GramyX7 but I agree with your daughter, curves to soften all the straight lines, she wins in my most humble opinion:-) Gray backing with gray thread. Beautiful quilt.

I'm a grandma a few times over. That lovely little girl in the picture needs to have flowers in the large blocks and swirls and stuff where she wants them. She should settle for a black and white print for the back, to help hide any quilting errors, prints are so much more forgiving.
I also think she should be doing some chores while the quilting is being done. If she has some skin in the game, she'll take better care of her new quilt. FANTASTIC quilt, by the way. |
I am by no means a quilting expert, in fact I probably would be considered a newbie, but I agree with you. It is a very busy quilt to start with and I'm thinking that her design would make it more so.
I am no expert but I would make it a bit more modern with straight line quilting (keeping it simple) .. or something like this:http://www.filminthefridge.com/2011/...lting-pattern/ and for the back I'd do plain gray (if your daughter likes gray)

Pls don't hate me :-( any of you...lol |

Very nice quilt! I think you should be the judge!
I'm afraid all your work would be lost on the busy fabric, so I like your idea better. And I also like the gray backing.
Yep I agree with you as well.
all over and gray
ditto. I agree with Lori. Love it
Okay vote is done.. all over design.. with gray backing, but we have to put in some bumble bee's and butterflys in the pain blocks or some flowers... i will let her have that .. :)
thanks to everyone.... trying to teach her to read a pattern, on how to quilt it... :) |

I just think the quilting needs to be round and curvy. There's so much square, sharp corners etc. it needs some round in the quilting. Mostly round. IMHO
