I'm posting a NOW picture of my sewing room in the hopes that it'll shame me into getting in there and cleaning it up so I can get going on some birthday blocks and a wallhanging I need to get to right now. As you can see, I have fabric, newly purchased and stuff I took from my stash to find what I need for some not-quite-yet WIPs. Need to wash and put away fabric, patterns, general stuff before I can even think of sewing. It's an embarassment. I'm hoping that posting this photo will act like a public stockade. Look for an "AFTER" photo from me in a few days. I hope.

NOW (or BEFORE) Sewing Room

What a woman!! Such courage, such passion, let me know how this works for you!! My husband is a neat freak, I'm not.....my sewing room looks a whole lot like yours in fact. He thinks that I am the only person on earth with a unkempt sewing area! 8-)

CarrieAnne 07-27-2010 06:51 AM

Aw, Puffin, it REALLY isnt that bad!!!! I bet in just a few hours itcould be beautiful and organised, and I cant WAIT to see the pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a pretty rug....sure is a pretty room! NOW, get going...I cant wait to see it!

QBeth 07-27-2010 06:53 AM

You consider your room a mess? Whew, is my room in trouble!! :-)

Rebecca VLQ 07-27-2010 06:55 AM

But Ginny, look at it this way: you LOVE to sew, right? You LOVE to quilt. You LOVE fabric. We take care of things we love. And so, you will be attentive and take care of your things today and give them a proper spot of honor, whether it's fabric stacked nicely on a shelf, or tools all happy and together. And if there's something staring at you that you DON'T love...put it in a box to go to another home.

No shaming here...just support!

sharon b 07-27-2010 07:12 AM

Have you tried chunking up the work ? 15 minutes here, 15 there, that way not so overwhelming

But either way , you are way ahead of me  LOL

b.zang 07-27-2010 07:15 AM

That's not so bad. Do you want to spend your time organizing or sewing? Make some room and sew, organize later!

I have to comment on your Ohio Star block on the board. I made a Christmas tree skirt from them in exactly the same colour combination. :)

littlehud 07-27-2010 07:27 AM

I'm sure you can do it. It's not that bad. And when you finish will you come and do mine.

Rachel 07-27-2010 07:30 AM

You can still see the floor, so I think you're in good shape. tee hee

Melinda in Tulsa 07-27-2010 07:37 AM

What's wrong with it??? It looks about like mine!

jlong 07-27-2010 07:39 AM

We can all see your carpet. So, it's not that bad.

redkimba 07-27-2010 07:48 AM

It's not that bad. Just break it down into sections & a little at a time.

tlrnhi 07-27-2010 07:53 AM

It looks fine to me! You really DO NOT want to see mine! I have a path to the sewing machine and that's about it!

CarrieAnne 07-27-2010 07:57 AM

LOL, nor mine! Actually mine is the kitchen table! Right now, we eat outside on the deck!!!!!!!!!(REALLY, and the kids ARE complaining!)

amandasgramma 07-27-2010 08:03 AM

Actually -- yeah, it's a mess........but it's an ORGANIZED mess!!! At least, that's what I tell MY husband!!!! LOL

Oh NO you are not!! We are all human and occasionally things get our of hand in any room!

Grama Lehr 07-27-2010 09:22 AM

Thanks! After reading these posts, I feel so much better!

pamesue 07-27-2010 09:36 AM

if you can find what you need when you need it...then it is not a mess...

I love the windows....natural light is the best

indycatcarol 07-27-2010 12:24 PM

Looks a WHOLE LOT BETTER than mine. Like the onle person said, a path from the door to the sewing machine.

Ritzquilts 07-27-2010 12:39 PM

I have a friend that oraganized and never got anything done....So sew sew sew...Really I clean up when I just can't stand it any more but just to put things back I need to know where they are...If I need an idea on what to start next then I clean up more and find something, then I sew sew sew again

That's what Im sayin!!!!

Kathy N 07-27-2010 01:50 PM

You should do like my mom used to do for me in my bedroom when I was little. She took wide ribbon and broke it into quadrants and told me to clean 1/4 of the room each day until it was done. It wasn't so bad then!!! (My sewing room looks just like yours :)

thequilterslink 07-27-2010 02:39 PM

LOL, mine looks worse and i just "cleaned" it

jljack 07-27-2010 02:45 PM

I know how you feel...I spent 30 minutes in my sewing room last night cleaning up remnants of my and DH's latest projects so that I can think about the next project. Whew!!! Still some cleaning to be done, but at least it's organized clutter!! :-) You can do it, girl!!! Just turn on some music and go to it!

Luv Quilts and Cats 07-27-2010 02:46 PM

OK...take a deep breath, organize the fabric into washed and unwashed, begin washing what needs to be washed and you will have made a huge first step. I hope you get your room the way you want it.

janiesews 07-28-2010 03:51 AM

Makes me feel at home! Mine is in need of a good cleaning and organizing day (or week).

Mona Marie 07-28-2010 03:54 AM

Do you know where every thing is? Then it is not disorganized!!!! Mine looks like that also and some on the floor being auditioned.

sewnmom 07-28-2010 04:06 AM

my first thought was that the rug makes it look cluttered.. your room is not as bad as it could be. you can have that room in good shape in no time. i love all that light coming in.. molly

gaigai 07-28-2010 04:09 AM

Hmm, looks completely fine to me! I'll bet you know where everything is, and that's what counts! LOL

PuffinGin 07-28-2010 07:05 AM

Thanks for all the support comments and gentle nudges. I'm taking your advice; I just pulled out of the piles the five fabrics I need for the first projects I need to get to: birthday blocks and wall hanging. After that I'll focus on decluttering the cutting area just enough so I can use it comfortably.

Bobbinchick 07-28-2010 07:14 AM

I track threads all over the apartment and such. Mine is always messy and I know where things are for the most part, but I can clean it up and once I get it cleaned up,,,,out comes the fabric! You'll be fine, Just do a litle each day and you'll be fine. but beware, the fabric could end up comming out just like me. Huggies, Fay

Nana Coop 07-28-2010 07:23 AM

Well, I bet you know where everything is "exactly."!!

Wow.. I wish my sewing room looked that organized. Mine is a disaster right now. I keep starting new projects before finishing others, so I have chaos right now. It doesn't help that I have to share my room with my pantry and my laundry.

(I did take the time to hang the pretty doll quilt from Sapdoggie, though!)

Someday, I will organize all this

Counter space... what counter space?

Scary, huh?

Sewing rooms are hard to control!!! Aren't they!?

Better even than that, don't wash the fabric at all. Works very well for me. If I had to wash fabric before using it, I would stop quilting immediately!!

I only wash if I am doing a swap. Otherwise, everything is unwashed. I only wash fabric that I know is going to be used for a swap project within a day or two of taking it out of the washer.

watson's mom 07-28-2010 07:45 AM

If you clean it up and put everything away...how will you ever find anything you want when you want it. Don't fix it if it ain't broke..it's still manageable the way it is.

nana15 07-28-2010 07:48 AM

My husband thinks I am the only person that can make such a big mess, in fact last year we had our house on the market and he and MY daughters took all of my sewing stuff and put it in storage. I am slowing getting it back but still have storage units I would love to have back in there , but will just have to show him I can do some what better now that I have a brain.
