I've been caught up with the Military Barracks Quilt Project almost since joining the board and have been seeing many of your quilts first hand because of it. But somehow I never thought to share some of mine with you until I got to playing around in my files this morning.

And a few more.
My Floral garden was made during my cottage chic period a few years ago, but is now on my bed and keeps me cozy during the winters which are so cold in my old cottage on the farm.

The Dancing School quilt was a challenge: design must be on the diagonal; must use hearts and bowties; must have black; must use Mary Ellen Hopkins piecing techniques. The hearts represent the girls - notice two who always clump together and whisper. The bows represent the boys, one of whom always flies in the face of the dress code. The shapes in the middle are the "couples" demonstrating the dance steps.

The Patriot Quilt, went to the VA hospital in Richmond VA this July.
These are all my personal designs.

Beautiful quilts. When I first looked at the Log Cabin I though you had used lace on the blocks--it's just your fabric placement. Very nice!

Beautiful log cabin! I'd like to take your class if you were closer. I have a lot of pink and red squares to use up. Love the floral garden, reminds me of an impressionist painting. All of your quilts are great. Nice work!

Jan in VA 10-11-2010 09:15 AM

Gosh, I'm so touched by your replies!

The log cabin seems pretty popular here; it was my DD's going-to-college quilt. -- "When the Sun Goes Down, The Stars Come Out"
It's the inspiration for a graded color study/log cabin construction class, a 2-in-1 class where I help the individual student pull their fabrics, if they wish, as they will be using from very light to medium on one side of the block and medium to very dark on the other side. Ten fabrics in all grading from light to dark....try it at home with your stash, it's great training for pulling fabrics for virtually any quilt. And then teach my never-fail method for always keeping your LC blocks straight and true.

The pink hearts are actually NOT squares!! It's a trick. The colors are ALL the hues in the red/maroon/pink/rust/purple family, as many as possible. For the greatest interest, since *you* are not doing the work (in fancy piecing), the *fabric* has to! It's an interesting class to teach because it makes the student think outside the box during construction. Sometimes one has to "nudge" them like a stuck record player needle, LOL! I do have a pattern for this one, and another assembled the same way with stars, that I might be willing to package for sale. (Or you could just hire me to come to your group and teach it, LOL!)

The Patriot Quilt was one I drew on graph paper years ago, started to make it using a solid white background, outgrew my use of solids phase, put it aside for over 15 years, and thought I'd never complete it...it would be one of those "even though your quilt isn't finished, you're finished with your quilt" things.
Then I helped start the Patriot Quilters of Virginia. I finished it with same-fabric scraps I'd managed to hang onto for years (what a stash!) and it became our "banner" quilt as we felt it had too much white in it. It was donated long-armed with variegated patriotic thread and we ended up giving it to a precious soldier who fell in love with it at the VA Hospital in Richmond VA.
