New Basting Table and Linen Sampler
7 Attachment(s)
I bought two used folding tables for $30. I keep them in the garage when not in use. When they are set up side by side I have a flat surface of 60" x 72." Bed risers on the legs raise the table to a comfortable height. I was thrilled how quickly I was able to pin baste this quilt. Then I turned it over and there were puckers! Oh no!!!
I decided to take the pins out and try out Elmer's School Glue basting now that I had a large surface to see if that worked better. It did! I couldn't believe how easy, fast, and effective it was. I read where some people have a hard time squeezing the bottle. I put one of Sharon Schamber's fine tips on the glue container (purchased through this website: https://purpledaisiesquilting.com/) and then put the glue container in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes. OHMYGOSH! The glue came out so thin it was like liquid spider webs. I don't think the whole quilt took more than 15 minutes to baste. The quilt stayed competely flat the whole time I was quilting. I'm sold on this method. The quilt is made from linen fabric samples that an interior decorator gave me when he cleaned out his closet. I put Pellon 906F interfacing on the linen blocks since they were stretchy. |
Very Nice, like your setup

wow, beautiful quilt!

Your setup is great and I love your quilt. The shadowing is wonderful. Thanks for the tip about putting the bottle of glue in warm water for a few minutes too.

Beautiful quilt and quilting.

This really appeals to me....really soft and warm looking with your color choices. Beautiful! Your quilting is top notch and love when quilter's are just so wise and creative with their solutions. Good job on the tables!!
|
Great way to problem solve. Your quilting looks like perfection! (Is that hand quilted?)
|
Wonderful result. Everything about that quilt was well executed!
|
Looks like you’ve developed a great way to baste your quilts...and it obviously works wonderfully for you. Love your quilting too.

What a great quilt! Really adore your shadow box setting of the fabric samples. Great quilting too.
|
Your quilt is beyond beautiful....stunning. The balance of your shadow's around each block really sets everything off...and the way you set the blocks makes everything unique.
|
Wonderful quilt and quilting!

The warnings on the can say "NEVER use in confined areas or areas with little or no air movement. Provide adequate ventilation (fresh air movement) to keep vapor concentrations below OSHA recommended exposure limits." Outside spraying is the only safe way to use it. If one did wear a respirator inside when using it, the overspray would make everything it touches sticky. Elmer's School glue has none of these limitations, and it was really easy to use. |
I've never tried glue basting, am always leary that it would gum up my machine when quilting it but may have to try it. I wonder if it would work to make the glue thin enough to use in a spray bottle. Guess I could try it to see if it would work. By the way, great quilt.

I love the praying mantis on the quilt.

An absolutely gorgeous job you did on this and I love how you figured out to use samples and put them into a gorgeous quilt. One thing I will say about spray baste, as I use it all the time and don't use it outdoors...it's fast, very efficient and if used carefully there is no over spraying. Since I use hairspray in greater quantities that spray baste, I'm not too worried about the occasional quilt. Just finished one that I had lightly basted and half quilted, folded up, pushed into a basket, manhandeld and took out again to work on...the baste held beautifully...no pins in it ever btw.
What I AM very pleased to see was you use of warm water to thin the glue...that was very smart and something I'll try in the future. But spray basting, for me is the only way to go. One must be careful, take your time and do the lightest of applications...it holds and can be adjusted in the case of wrinkles, and not need to be resprayed.. for edges, push the quilt to the middle of the table and spray there...if there is any overspray it will go onto the table to be cleaned up. Once again, beautiful job on your quilt. |
Love the idea about the bed-risers on the tables. Thanks for the tip! Your quilt is gorgeous!

Beautiful quilt. I dilute the Elmers about 1/3 water, 2/13 glue, and use the regular nozzle, but I don't squeeze very hard. That works well for me. I gave a class in basting with Elmers, which we started to call Elmering :-). Someone suggested just warming the bottle with their hands for a short time, and then it flowed rather nicely too.

Very, Very Pretty both the quilt and quilting...wonderful job and thanks for sharing all the pictures.
|
Great ideas, thanks for sharing.
Not only that, your quilt is lovely! |
Very pretty quilt. Love the shadowing effect. You are very clever with the tables and the glue. Your quilting is very professional looking. Overall, a very gorgeous quilt! Kudos.
|
Good for you. Both your set up and quilt are terrific!
|
I LOVE the look of the blocks; I'm going to have to add that to my bucket list. (need a bigger bucket too!)
|
Wow, some great ideas there and a great looking quilt, too!
I made a quilt a few years ago using interior designer fabric samples. It's a great source for matching fabrics, color-wise. |
I always use it in my sewing room
and I just have my quilting friend help me sandwich quilts |

The quilt is very beautiful. I haven't tried the glue basting yet myself but I think I'm going to.
|
I also have those tips, and they work wonderfully. Thanks for the tip about the warm water; that is a great idea.

Fabulous quilt but thank you thank you thank you for your idea about the two tables and bed risers (available at my local Goodwill store!!) I have major problems with my back and trying to put a quilt together on my floor is excruciating! I'm going to get two tables and risers, thanks to YOU!!!

Love your idea about the tables & bed risers. I've gone to the local Senior Center & they've let me use their table for pin basting my quilts. The bed risers would make that even easier. Your quilt is absolutely stunning. Thanks for sharing all your info & talents with us.

Lovely quilt!
