Once I was telling my mother that I wanted a featherweight and she was surprised because it was so small. She said that was the machine people bought that didn't have any room for a full sized machine or a person that didn't really sew but wanted a machine to do mending and nothing else. My grandmother had one (she hated to sew) and she gave it to my aunt when she could no longer thread the needle. My aunt said she has never gotten the machine out of the case, so not sure what it is. I have 2 now - both were bought from strangers.

Now don't chop my head off! I bought one several yrs ago, thinking I really wanted a FW......well I don't! I prefer the newer machines that have more bells and whistles...and really my " new" machines give me just as fine a stitch as FW does.....so " she" sits in her case...maybe I will sell it at our upcoming garage sale.....

Be sure to give your mother in law a big hug for that wonderful machine. She must think a lot of you.................

Geri, I can understand not wanting a featherweight. I never cared one way or the other, either. I think they are cute, but I would have never bought one. I tried this one out on my BOM. It worked great, but it won't become a daily used machine because I don't have room for 2 at a time and NO ONE is moving my Brother 1500 out. :D

I have a friend who has one something like this which came to her from her grandmother. She doesn't sew, but uses it in her scrapbooking hobby. I only saw it once, when we were doing a project, before I even knew about the little featherweights. Later when I asked her about it she said it wasn't a featherweight, but it was an early portable, and sooooo cute!

You are soooooo fortunate. My sweet baby girl paid $500 for my 1936 FW. It looks like new and has all the attachments and the case doesn't smell & is in perfect condition. 1936 is my birth year.

Looks just like mine. It had been my MIL's and she hated it. She preferred to take her mending back to the farm and do it on her old White machine because it was heavy. When I received the machine after it was necessary to move her to our home it still had the first lint in it. I doubt that it had been used enough to empty one bobbin. I love it and carry it to classes and in our camper. I hope you really enjoy it. It does only one thing but does it magnificently well.
