"New" Machine

1 Attachment(s)
From the serial number, I think this was manufactured in 1954. It looks almost as if it has never been used. The box is still very sturdy and has almost no blemishes on it. It seems to sew perfectly fine. I'm going to try to make my BOM on it this time and see what happens.

My MIL gave it to my husband the last time he visited because she doesn't sew "anymore". I've known her 23 years and had no clue she had EVER sewn. She has farmed it all out to other family members as long as I have known her.

I just bought one just like yours. It too looks like it has never been used. Maybe I
will try it out soon. Good catch

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 06-18-2014 02:10 PM

Beats me if it is a blue centennial badge, but I don't think so.

Stitchnripper 06-18-2014 02:11 PM

What a pretty little machine!

QuiltingVagabond 06-18-2014 02:19 PM

That's the very best way to get a Featherweight, from someone in the family in mint condition!

Congratulations on your unexpected baby! "She" is a beauty!

NUTMEG10 06-19-2014 03:08 AM

How lucky are you. I have the same year machine and just love her. Yours looks like it was never used. You should have maintenance done on it before you use it (needs to be oiled). You will love the performance of the machine and how quiet it is. Enjoy her.

BerninaGirl 06-19-2014 03:35 AM

so wonderful for you!!!!

gabeway 06-19-2014 04:20 AM

coachmatthewsvhs 06-19-2014 03:54 PM

you are very lucky... The auction here gets $300.00 almost every time one shows up!!

quiltingcandy 06-19-2014 04:11 PM

Once I was telling my mother that I wanted a featherweight and she was surprised because it was so small. She said that was the machine people bought that didn't have any room for a full sized machine or a person that didn't really sew but wanted a machine to do mending and nothing else. My grandmother had one (she hated to sew) and she gave it to my aunt when she could no longer thread the needle. My aunt said she has never gotten the machine out of the case, so not sure what it is. I have 2 now - both were bought from strangers.

Geri B 06-20-2014 04:57 AM

Now don't chop my head off! I bought one several yrs ago, thinking I really wanted a FW......well I don't! I prefer the newer machines that have more bells and whistles...and really my " new" machines give me just as fine a stitch as FW does.....so " she" sits in her case...maybe I will sell it at our upcoming garage sale.....

trolleystation 06-20-2014 05:09 AM

Be sure to give your mother in law a big hug for that wonderful machine. She must think a lot of you.................

Sew Freak 06-20-2014 05:26 AM

oh wow!!! !!!!

roserips 06-20-2014 07:25 AM

SCORE! You must be favored DIL nice machine, so enjoy.

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 06-20-2014 07:50 AM

Geri, I can understand not wanting a featherweight. I never cared one way or the other, either. I think they are cute, but I would have never bought one. I tried this one out on my BOM. It worked great, but it won't become a daily used machine because I don't have room for 2 at a time and NO ONE is moving my Brother 1500 out. :D

JoyjoyMarie 06-20-2014 08:07 AM

What a beauty of a machine. Lucky you!

I have a friend who has one something like this which came to her from her grandmother. She doesn't sew, but uses it in her scrapbooking hobby. I only saw it once, when we were doing a project, before I even knew about the little featherweights. Later when I asked her about it she said it wasn't a featherweight, but it was an early portable, and sooooo cute!

Lady Jane 06-20-2014 08:11 AM

What a pretty Girl !!!

misseva 06-20-2014 09:29 AM

You are soooooo fortunate. My sweet baby girl paid $500 for my 1936 FW. It looks like new and has all the attachments and the case doesn't smell & is in perfect condition. 1936 is my birth year.

quilterpurpledog 06-20-2014 10:15 AM

Looks just like mine. It had been my MIL's and she hated it. She preferred to take her mending back to the farm and do it on her old White machine because it was heavy. When I received the machine after it was necessary to move her to our home it still had the first lint in it. I doubt that it had been used enough to empty one bobbin. I love it and carry it to classes and in our camper. I hope you really enjoy it. It does only one thing but does it magnificently well.
