I recall years ago a friend of mine had attempted a Trip Around The World quilt for her first one, and she had to pick out like 20 different fabrics. I don't think she ever finished it, and we've lost touch since. I'm currently working on a Lover's Knot quilt (with really BRIGHT colors for my 10-year-old daughter), and I'd love to find something totally different for my next project. |

So gorgeous!!!! Great job Karla!!!!!
|
Absolutely gorgeous, I wasn't too sure about all the colors, they do look great.
|
I love to be able to see the progression. Thanks! I'm not close to being able to do something like that yet but maybe some day I hope.
|
Love these kind of quilts, you are very brave, I should try one someday. Just picking the fabrics is a real job. You are doing very well, looks great.
|
Beautiful ! Awesome quilt ! I am going to have to stop looking at these gorgeous quilts and wanting to make them all. I do want to make a Bargello if it is the last thing I do. You did a great job barnbum, and you have motivated me to give this one a try.
|
Beautiful, awesome, marvelous, majestic! I read the last pages of the post looking for your progress report. Closed the post and notice in the title the finished quilt is on page 8. It is wonderful. Excellent job on the fabric choices. You mentioned you have another one in the works? Didn't I see that in one of your posts? Love your work.

Barnbum, if this were my quilt, I think I'd add about a 2 1/2" sashing in black or even dark green. Then I'd do a piano key border with colors matching the rows it lines up with but one row down so it kind of looks like the pattern is continuing behind the black sashing. But it sounds like you may not have enough fabrics left.

Here are the colors I'm thinking for the border--I want it to blend and frame without distracting. Of course the widths would be different.... |
Karla, those 3 colors look good to me!

Oh you have me wanting to run out and buy fabric and start making this quilt!!!! I do need a project that I can stay with tho so maybe that is not such a bad thing..... Bad thing is there is ice on the roads here today so Iwill not be leaving anytime to soon.. Your quilt is simply georgous...

I've been reading a lot about these quilts, and see that there's a strip method & one that makes a 'tube' from the fabric after the colors are sewn together. I'm wondering if one works better than the other one. I found a nice, simpler smaller one on the download I got last night. It's more of a 'wave' and uses the fabric tube technique.
Just have to say again the wonderful job you gals did on your quilts. They are just awesome!! I told my hubby I'd like to take a trip to a fabric shop in Lancaster & pick a bunch of fabric for a bargello, maybe all smaller floral prints to make it look like a wildflower garden. He looked at me like I was nuts & said I have too many projects started already. Funny thing is, I only have like 2, and one's almost done. |

Anybody know if there's too many seams in a bargello to hand quilt easily? |
I love to see it all come together. It looks awesome.

Well, I can't say that I'm READY to show mine, but it may help others who try their hand at a Bargello.... I think (I hope!) I learned some things about fabric selection. As you'll see, there are a few fabrics that I should not have used, they don't flow well. But until I tried it, I couldn't really see it. This is part of a quilt called "Free Falling" from the Oct. 09 Quilter's World Magazine. There will be maple leaves on top and one side and I am using a cocoa brown border ... I think. The leaves are made from 9 of the fabrics from the Bargello. My next one will be better! :-) There are about 3 or 4 fabrics in mine that do not blend well. The pattern, when cut up for the Bargello doesn't flow and it ruins the continuity of the whole design. It seems to jerk my eyes away from the "flow" of the pattern. Next time, I will choose all fabrics with an overall "even" design or coloration. I hope that makes sense! |

I was gonna say Bargellos look best without borders, and then you came up with the perfect border. Way to go Karla!!!!
|
Oh my, is that gorgeous!!!!! A twisted bargello, or possibly even a links bargello, if I can find a pattern, is on my to-do list for 2011. I've never done one of any kind at all yet, so, whaddya think, should I start out with a simpler one than the twisted? The simple ones just aren't as stunning, though!!
Love your organization, and totally understand why it is key!! |

You did a wonderful job of fabric/color selection. Can't wait to see the finished product. |
Stunning!! I think I would use a narrow border of the gold and a wider one of their of the others. I think I like the middle one best for that. All of your fabric choices are marvelous.
|
So glad you posted this "in process", shows how the double curve gets in there.
|
Wow, that is beautiful.
|
I have always been a little afraid of the Bargello quilts but you make it look easy. Looks like your good organizational skills are key.

I must say it looks a lot better in a photo than in person!
There were two sections that didn't go together well--too many seams were off, so I ripped it apart and sewed it from the other direction and it went together much better! Now to decide on borders. I cannot figure out how anyone can design these Bargellos! The directions say we might want to make it bigger.... Ha ha ha ha ha.  I couldn't figure that out if my life depended on it! My hat off to anyone who can!! I'm thinking about danmar and her Swish!! :-D I've decided to use the extra strips for either an easier Bargello pattern (Surf Song) OR for more log cabin squares--like are in my most favorite quilt ever. Your Bargello is stunning!! Gorgeous! |

The math is the easy part. The sewing is much harder.
|
Your quilt is magnificent! Thanks for all the pictures.
|
It's beautiful! Love the colors.
|
I like these 3 too!! Nice choices!!

Such organized people make me a bit jealous.
The quilt is nice but your work space looks like it is to die for. |
Going to be beautiful! Can't wait to see it finished!
|
OOOH that nice. Love those colors!
