New to quilting! WV quilt

Good Morning Everyone. I am so excited I finally have completed a quilt. WV quilt at that. Now I want to get started on another one but I am not good at picking out matching fabric. Quite overwhelming to me.

Great Mountaineer quilt! Welcome to the board from a Texas Tech fan from the Big 12!

alleyoop1 01-07-2015 05:11 AM

If you have a local quilt shop, the staff there should be helpful in picking matching and contrasting fabrics.

Welcome to the board and congratulations on your first quilt. I like to recommend sampler quilts to people just learning. You will learn loads of different quilting techniques with a sampler so you will never be afraid of any pattern in the future, I am living proof. Since making this I have tackled Lone star, Tumbling blocks, Mariner's compass and am now delving into applique (which I have avoided for most of my quilting journey since starting over 20 years ago!). If one of the blocks in your sampler is too difficult you can always substitute with a different block. I am self taught and learned with this book:
http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Quilt...rning+to+quilt

I have since taken classes to learn specific techniques.

Here is a link to the photo of that quilt:

Great job!!

Judyth 01-07-2015 06:03 AM

Looks like you did a great job with this one. Your points match up beautifully and these colors go together perfectly.

flytyingdiva 01-07-2015 06:55 AM

Jenny Beyer has a free class at Craftsy.com She goes into color theory. at the beginning. Shows you how to hand piece. I'm pretty new to quilting my self this is a Block of the Month. Every month you make one block. This quilt is just beautiful. I have see a lot of BOM quilts but just didn't like them. I'm making this one my self you can order the kit or use your stash. She shows you how to pick your color pallet. Check it out costs nothing.

Welcome to the board! Your quilt is great and sure doesn't look like a first one to me! I, too, have trouble with matching fabrics and that is the reason I like to buy kits. Connecting Threads has reasonably priced quilt kits (usually several on sale) and they give you plenty of fabric in their kits. Keep up the great work!

QuiltnNan 01-07-2015 07:05 AM

very nicely done, and welcome to the QB

Homespun 01-07-2015 07:11 AM

Welcome. Great first quilt!

tessagin 01-07-2015 07:15 AM

Welcome to the board! Great looking quilt. Small tip; Look at the selvage edge of the fabric, most of the time you will see a guide bubbles for coordinating colors for fabric. Cyber space is full of ideas and this QB is also.

Basketman 01-07-2015 07:23 AM

Before I gained any confidence about color, integration of scale and a host of what seemed to be insurmountable intangibles that go into making a well thought out quilt; I found that if you pick a designer that you like and buy fabrics within their collections that most of the fabrics will integrate well. I gravitated to Jo Morton and used a major amounts of different fabrics in my first quilt and when it was done and quilted, I can still stand back and none of the fabrics scream MISTAKE! The biggest error is to doubt yourself; after all it is your money, time and talent that will transition your purchases into a finished quilt and unless you dress yourself daily to the horrified stares of others, you probably have better color sense than you think.

Welcome from Northern California. Looks like you are well on your way. First quilts are special and it looks like yours is super. BrendaK

From another mountaineer... I love your quilt. I live in Charleston.

gramajo 01-07-2015 10:45 AM

I second the suggestion about buying a quilt kit from Connecting Threads. A sampler is also great since you will learn a variety of techniques. Missouri Quilt Co. also has a number of tutorials to help you.

FabStripper 01-07-2015 11:13 AM

You did a great job on your first quilt. Did you do the quilting yourself? I really like this quilt.

Dina 01-07-2015 01:22 PM

What a beautiful quilt!! Well done.

Dina

KSue 01-07-2015 02:58 PM

nice quilt. I'm sure you have some WV fans out there that like this. (I grew up in WV)

jenOSU 01-07-2015 07:33 PM

Great start! You can always buy some kits when starting out, but you are probably not really as bad as you think you are at picking fabrics :)

JuneBillie 01-08-2015 02:35 AM

coopah 01-08-2015 05:15 AM

Looks like you're well on your way to being a top notch quilter. Half square triangles and the colors are fantastic! You're doing great! Keep sharing your quilts with us, please.

Daisy Dew 01-08-2015 05:43 AM

Welcome! So nicely done. I love hst.

Billi 01-08-2015 06:04 AM

Your quilt is lovely great job, you should be quite proud. I would no more have shown the first quilt I made to a group of strangers than fly to the moon. You would have had to be on the moon to not see the hot mess it was and yet my neice loved it and I kept it up.

I also struggle with colors and fabric patterns I don't think it will ever be easy for me but I am getting better.

twinkie 01-08-2015 06:13 AM

You did such a great job. Each time you will learn something new.

Ariannaquilts 01-08-2015 07:16 AM

Welcome to the board you did a good job on your first quilt. I take it you had it quilted by someone else or did you do that as well? You will do fine and until your comfortable with picking out fabrics find one that you love and just pull colors from that you can't go wrong doing that.

quiltingeileen 01-08-2015 07:21 AM

Welcome from Massachusetts! When I first started picking fabric for a project, I would go into the quilt shop with the pattern and ask one of the gals if they would like to help me pick out fabric. The gals are more than happy to assist you in "playing" with fabric. It can really be quite fun! Thanks for sharing the picture of your first quilt. It is very pretty.

Greenheron 01-08-2015 07:54 AM

Welcome from another 'Mountaineer.' Look at loads of quilts and be inspired by the ones you love. (Our quilting forebears assembled quilts from clothing scraps and recycled clothing.....you might choose fabric for a quilt from colors you like to wear.)

Caswews 01-08-2015 07:56 AM

Very pretty for sure ..Its hard to pick fabrics..I bought a color wheel to help me out. Sometimes I get it right and others ..well lets just say the furbabies have lots of quilts !LOL :-)
