I like 1 1/4" for center strip. The other strips can be any size and don't have to be cut straight. I prefer strips 1" - 2". Less is hard to sew (remember you will have about 1/2" for seams) and over 2" gets a bit clunky. I hope you make one, you will just love it. Be sure to post a picture.
