A New Twist (to me!) on An Old Idea!!

4 Attachment(s)
Many of you will have seen these wine glass coasters before ...
(the new twist is yet to come!)

So what if you made them larger?? ...

Guess most of us wouldn't need a mega-sized wine glass coaster ...
... but you might have use for a pot holder!!
Instead of the fruit compote, put your hand in the parting of the 4 strips.

And a look from the other side ...
(an orphan PC block re-purposed!!:))

Very cool!!

The only wine glass coasters I've seen look like little flip flops. I like yours better.

MamaBear61 04-19-2013 04:13 PM

Very creative QuiltE. Cute critter fabric.

mirabelle 04-19-2013 04:23 PM

Very cool! I got some of the wine coasters for my daughter for x-mas. She loves them.

QuiltE 04-19-2013 07:51 PM

Thanks everyone! I needed some new pot holders and this is the prototype.

Your wine glass coasters and twists, especially the potholder are awesome. I am a beginner quilter, and need a pattern for everything I do. Do you have a pattern, or know of any tutorials on how to make these? I looked on this board, but could not find any. Thank you.

Sorry ... I don't have a pattern, I just look and make!
Here's somewhat of a pattern which I think you can understand. If not, ask questions.

... Wine Glass Coasters ...
Cut five 4-1/2" squares (one for your backing, and four for the lattice; colours and # fabrics as you wish).
Fold and press the four lattice pieces in half.
Lay the folded strips creating a lattice onto the right side of the backing square.
Pin in place.
Stitch fully around.
Turn inside out.

* I have glasses that will not fit inside, so check first. If it's for yourself, you can custom-size, just by changing the square size.

* If I were making them again, I would add a little batting or flannelette for a bit of absorption, to catch those little spills and drips

... Pot Holders ...
Sandwich an orphan block (or just a piece of material) with thermal insulation and a backing fabric.
Quilt it (or you could do strip piecing, using scraps!)
Trim to size.
Cut four squares for the lattice, the same size as the trimmed "quilt".
Fold in half and press.
Layer and Lattice those strips to the backing of your quilted piece.
Pin in place.
Stitch all the way around with less than a 1/4" seam (so binding can hide the stitching).
Bind the edge as you would a quilt. (too much bulk to turn inside out, like the coasters)

* This one started with 11" squares. Change the size for what you'd like.
* Smaller ones are fine for just pot holders. This one will be multi-purpose as pot holder, and then setting hot bowls/casserolees on at the table.

Hope this helps!!!!!

And hope you will post your creations back to this thread, for all to see and be inspired.

Thank you so much for the instructions QuiltE. I plan to make some coasters for my wine drinking son and daughter, and some pot holders for my other daughter. Will be a while though, as I am getting ready to move next month. Thank you again.

You're Welcome!!
To try the pattern ... make a set of both for yourself first.
Sure would be a nice gift to have ready for yourself for your new home.

After all ... Mom needs to take care of Mom FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Why wait ... start now ... and take a break from the packing!! :D

mighty 04-20-2013 07:06 AM

That is a really great idea!!!!

DogHouseMom 04-20-2013 07:42 AM

Awesome!! Great re-purposing of an orphan block!!
Nice try making us think that second one wasn't your personal wine glass ... your secret is out :)

MartiMorga 04-20-2013 08:06 AM

Love them both as wine coasters and pot holders, nice job

:D Speak for yourself, Puppy! :D

Before I made it, I wasn't sure about the "pockets" for the hand ... but it works splendidly!

JenDale 04-20-2013 08:52 AM

what a cool idea....is there a tutorial for these please?

alisonquilts 04-20-2013 12:02 PM

Should be good for your purpose ... practicality and price-point perfect!
And to boot, work up quickly, without a lot of expense for you.
Likewise the wine glass cozeys! :)

Good thinking! As I am packing, I will pick out the fabric, and take a break. Thanks again.

jpmaroni 04-21-2013 03:32 AM

Love the idea.

jmoore 04-21-2013 03:50 AM

what a great idea... thank you for sharing.

RGAY 04-21-2013 04:15 AM

This idea solves a big problem for me! When we have a party, everyone always ends up with someone else's wine glass.... once I make a dozen or so of these, problem solved, as long as I make each one different! It also solves another problem - I can't get a couple of our friends to even use coasters on our antique tables..... with these they will have no choice! Thanks so much for the instructions!

solstice3 04-21-2013 04:44 AM

Very nice!

Elaine433 04-21-2013 05:07 AM

gramquilter2 04-21-2013 07:13 AM

Great idea, love wine so maybe the twist is what I need to be making! Would be cute to make one for a cake stand with a birthday theme.
