The other day I noticed how badly faded the pictures over our bed had become [see first photo]. I happened to mention this at my last book group meeting, and folks looked at me with shock: "You have pictures WITH GLASS over your BED?!?!" When I looked back at them in surprise, they all quickly reminded me that we happen to live in [duh!] earthquake country and that "the big one" is due any day now....
Oh, yeah...... So... What should I put over my bed that doesn't involve glass?? Wall words? Nice idea, but my husband thinks they're dumb. [They aren't, but try telling him!!] Then it hit me -- I'm a quilter. I make quilts. I like making quilts. Why don't I make a quilt for over the bed? If that fell down, no harm done! So I started thinking about patterns and fabrics. [Colors were a foregone conclusion, since the room is blue with white trim and ceiling.] I couldn't make up my mind between about a half-dozen wonderful patterns -- when I had the brilliant [or so it seemed at the time] idea to make several small quilts, all different, and put them into a grouping -- much like I would have done with framed pictures. And so, ladies and germs, I present my former and faded bedroom wall, and my much improved and much more colorful wall! All five minis are made with most of the same fabrics, just rearranged and shuffled around. I know I should have waited to take a photo in daylight like I did the first one, but I just had to share. Hope you like 'em. I do! :P Faded and boring...... [Forgive the weird angle; I was trying to avoid glare from the flash on the glass and from the window to the right.] Ta-daaaa! Not boring now! They'll probably keep us awake at night! :-D |
What an improvement! They look great!

NICE JOB - I'm going to have to consider something like that. I'm not big on pictures hanging anywhere - they require dusting.

Wow Quiltinlady, I LOVE that - do you mind if I steal that idea? I've got stacks of blue and white fabric I got in Holland and was trying to think of a pattern for one large quilt. Now I think I'll make lots of small ones and group them like that! IF you don't mind me copying! Great idea! AND an excellent way to try a LOT of patterns! :D

Goodness! What an outpouring of support and praise! I'm overwhelmed...! Thank you all!! :-P
To answer your questions: ~ They're hung with clear pushpins at each corner. ~ The majority are just a single block of something I liked. Found my ideas in books, online sites, here (!), etc. ~ I'd seen someone make single blocks and frame them, which looks really cool, but then I'd be back where I started. I'd also considered making the final border much wider and then putting the block on stretcher bars. But that seemed like too much work  and I wanted to make everything from what I had on the shelf. ~ Now that I've seen them in daylight, I still like them, but I'm having to get used to their "flatness." [The old frames were about 1-1/2" thick.] I was pleased to see that they look good in daylight, too. 8) Thanks again for your compliments. I don't get a lot of visitors to my bedroom ;), so not many folks would be likely to see them otherwise. |
That is great! I love it. It looks so much better and your work is beautiful.
|
Bee-utiful!!!

Very nice.....love all the blocks and the color is so pretty....you go girl....:-)
|
You clever girl! That looks great!

It looks great. I like your idea of a grouping. We don't have anything over the bed for that same reason (earthquakes) I started a quilt to hang over my bed about 6 years ago. It has been waiting 6 years for me to quilt it!!!! Maybe I will finish it and add a couple of smaller ones to hang with it.
Of course we have large bookcases on either side of the bed, full of books. We only have earthquake straps on the tallest one. If we have a bad earthquake, I will be hit with a bookcase full of books!!! |
Those are fantastic!!!! I love everything about them!!!! Definitely no boring going on there now!!!!! And if they do keep you awake, what better to look at when you cant sleep than those gorgeous little quilts!!!!! Well done!!!!!

Very refreshing and what a great idea to do the grouping!!! Good job!

You know, I have lots of faded pictures on my walls if you would like to experiment some more ... They look fantastic, and they would win out over anything the pros could come up with on the HG TV network. I never considered the threat of earthquakes in your area, which makes the whole concept of soft wall hangings even more ideal. You might really start a new fad out there. (Here we just worry about floods and hurricanes -- no biggie)
|
What a great idea, and you picked great patterns that go togather nicely.
