Just a quick look at the "bright" quilt I'm making right now! I hope you have your sunglasses on! Sorry for the weird photo - the topper is laying against the chesterfield so it's not very neatly displayed. I'm thinking about adding a dark blue/black border like the fabric in the nine patch blocks. The second border I'm considering a piano type border with longer strips of the colourful fabrics or perhaps 2" blocks alternating with blue/black 2" blocks. Your thoughts?

ManiacQuilter2 02-20-2015 01:09 PM

It is difficult to tell but you made a VERY attractive 9 patch. I certainly would use the inside border as the fabric in the 9 patch, but I am one who usually prefers softer darker borders that won't distract from the beautiful fabrics in your quilt.

playswithcolor 02-20-2015 01:22 PM

You asked, so I will throw out my opinion, which is only a suggestion. I would add one border of the dark fabric used in the 9 patches, cut so it will finish the same width as the size of the 9 patch squares. Then I would audition bindings. Maybe use the dark fabric for binding too. If you need to add a 2nd border to make the quilt bigger, I would choose one of the green, blue or gold fabrics.

Beautiful quilt. Wonderful example of fabrics making the quilt.

Thanks to both you and ManiacQuilter2! Some good thoughts and very welcome to this "learning" quilter. I have yardage in the blue/black so can easily make a border and binding as well. For the other fabrics though, I have 5" squares and some strips about 8" long (enough to make a second border). I need now to try the quilt on the bed and see how much longer it needs to be. It will help narrow down the ideas. Thanks again for all your thoughts!

Very pretty quilt!

wow love it ...........nice job

katier825 02-20-2015 03:16 PM

Pretty! I don't think it needs sunglasses. :) I like the idea of a dark inner border. For the outer border, I'd want to audition before deciding. Maybe make a small section of one pieced like you are considering and then see what you think. It's a lot of work to decide after if you decide you didn't like it.

quiltmouse 02-20-2015 03:22 PM

That is so pretty!!!

What in the world are the plain (not plain at all!) blocks made with? Are those motifs in the batik fabrics? or did you paint them yourself, or applique???

Quiltngolfer 02-20-2015 04:20 PM

Beautiful quilt!

earthwalker 02-20-2015 05:52 PM

Lovely, great fabrics.

jenOSU 02-20-2015 08:42 PM

Lovely quilt! I think the piano key border would distract from the quilt. Can't wait to see what you decide!

I love your quilt!!! I have the same question as quiltmouse about the blocks that are between the 9 patch. They're so pretty. I like very wide borders and I have one quilt that has 5 on it. Lay the top on the floor and fold and lay your fabric for the borders against the side until you find something you like. Can't wait to see what you decide!! :)

I don' know what she used in this quilt, but there are some out there - search batik tiles. Here are some I found by Hoffman.

I agree with the above but I don't think it needs a second border. It is lovely.

Quilter 65 02-21-2015 05:48 AM

That is a wowser quilt. Simple pattern, simply beautiful.

nabobw 02-21-2015 06:07 AM

very pretty

MYWR 02-21-2015 06:12 AM

love it ! what pattern did you use? Did you fussy cut your square blocks ? As to you request for borders, I agree with the dark border and then would consider using 4-patches of all of your 9-patch blocks (does that make sense?) for the outermost border and bind in black. But you did marvelously with this quilt - you should make the decision !

Homespun 02-21-2015 07:03 AM

So very nice...I don't think it is too bright!

joyce888 02-21-2015 08:25 AM

Very pretty. I like the idea of a darker border with another border of the alternating blocks.

BerninaGirl 02-21-2015 08:47 AM

Oh my gosh I love it.

Thank you! Those blocks are Hoffman Bali Batik Fabric Squares - Volcano. They came on strips of four that you fussy cut apart. The other fabrics are coordinating Volcano fabrics from Hoffman.

Thanks for all your great advice! Everyone is always so positive in this group! I didn't use a pattern but I did see a similar quilt on display at a local quilt shop. It was done in blue and white - very beautiful. I had the Volcano strips to cut apart so I just needed to figure out how to make everything the same size. A very easy quilt!

I just looked online to see if I could find the pattern that was used in the blue & white quilt I saw at the quilting shop. It's a Laundry Basket quilt pattern called Snow Sparkle. The blocks are done on point so it has a bit of a different look. http://www.abbimays.com/Quilt-Patter...LE_p_2222.html

I love the colors. I guess I like sunglasses quilts!

border decision made

Thanks everyone for your ideas and suggestions! I laid the topper on the bed today and it turned out that I only had room for one border. I added the dark blue/black fabric that I used in the 9 patch blocks - same size as the pieces in the 9 patches and I think it will look fine.

jmoore 02-22-2015 04:09 AM

I happen to like bright so I think your quilt is fantastic. I'm sure you'll find the proper home for it.

Texas_Sue 02-22-2015 04:17 AM

Batiks are wonderful - aren't they? I really like the snowflake materials and your 9 patches are really pretty.

mea12 02-22-2015 05:00 AM

I've never seen the batik fabrics w/ the pretty center motifs? What is it called?

quilterpurpledog 02-22-2015 05:07 AM

I think your quilt is beautiful. Since you are asking for opinions I will add mine. I think a small inner border of one of the colors would be lovely and I think a solid dark outer border would cause the eye of the viewer to concentrate on your lovely pattern and wonderful color combination. I think a pieced border would be distracting. I would also do the binding of the same fabric as the outer border. I will be anxious to see what you do-you have lots of suggestions.

solstice3 02-22-2015 05:10 AM

I am terrible at suggesting for others. I must say so far ... Beautiful. I definitely would frame it with the blue/ black, maybe a bit wider than a 2.5 inch strip before adding color then bind with the blue/black

coopah 02-22-2015 05:37 AM

I would use just the black to frame it.

Momala24 02-22-2015 05:44 AM

I like the idea of the dark inner border and then the piano keys. It will be stunning!
