sigh....

speaking of giving quilts to charity....

this groups of 'ladies' and I use the term loosely - ahem..... proper southern belles every last one of 'em... yea right, ok...

anyway....

they make quilts and 'raffle' them off to raise money for the group - we can't use 'raffle' because that's gambling and have to use another word only I can't think of what it is but it really is a raffle...

so I picked up the Christmas material after the holidays from walmart for $1 a yard and made this quilt top (74x87) and gave it to the group to finish (they do that) and then sell....

several of the ladies wanted to do it by hand but it got nowhere, plus a few said 'oh it's too small'
so I said well, would 2 more yards of material be enough to make it bigger? and was told, sure

one of the ladies has a long arm and generally finishes the quilts for the group so I didn't have any problem with that...

so this is how she finished it - she put one (ONE) wide strip down ONE SIDE and that's it.........

let me tell you, that quilt is ALL HERS - do not even mention my name in the same breath as that quilt!!

 8)

http://usera.imagecave.com/Mavican/hm2.jpg

this REALLY goes to that "once you give it, they can do ANYTHING with it..." and boy did they ever...

buwahhahahahaaaaa

one?? at least opposite sides? ya think? or maybe even three sides for a drop? or none or all four sides? but one side??

am I the only one who thinks that was taking cattiness to an extreme?
couldn't she have given it back to me and said, "make it bigger"?

oh well, live and learn...
I told the president of the group not to ask me to do any more sewing....

ps you can see that she did a BARE minimum of sewing on the longarm....

Shadow Dancer 05-19-2008 10:12 AM

Ummm .... maybe she had a senior moment and forgot the other sides??? I know I'm grasping at straws here, plus I'm laughing so hard it's difficult to think, let alone type... LOL

Perhaps this is the new style that is coming out and we just haven't heard of it????

I really don't know what to say except,.... distance yourself from that one for sure! :)

beachlady 05-19-2008 10:14 AM

I still have a quizzical look on my face! Why would anyone do that? No answer for you.

purpl7 05-19-2008 10:17 AM

Oh, I definately think you have reason to be..... ummm.... peeved in the extreme. I can't even imagine that they would not finish to look as wonderful as when you started it. I would have said more than a few choice words to them, but you probably handled it better than I would have.

It's amazing to me that some quilters can be so helpful and wonderful and others so disturbingly disgusting. How irritating.

I am very sorry that they did that to you. I love the look of the quilt otherwise. You must have put a lot of work into it. Also, I love the Christmas fabrics, and the dark blue to balance them. You did a great job.

Izy 05-19-2008 10:24 AM

Is this the 'new off-set' look then, maybe she has started a new trend there...no seriously I would be absolutely fuming...I find it so hard to imagine 'catiness' to this extreme, to spoil the effect of a beautiful quilt, donated for charity.....unreal!!

Chele 05-19-2008 10:41 AM

Well, even a lopsided border treatment can't make that pretty quilt ugly! You did a fine job! And for charity, too! Kudos to you on your beautiful and cheery quilt! Make more!

Shadow Dancer 05-19-2008 10:53 AM

I want to add, your quilt is gorgeous, I love the fabrics and the pattern. :)

Lisa 05-19-2008 11:05 AM

in the pic it looks like it is one 3 sides and nothing on the left side?

Janeen 05-19-2008 11:16 AM

I changed the picture so you can see the ONE side better...
top, bottom, left side ends at red and blue binding, right side has VERY WIDE blue strip added then binding???????????????????

isnthatodd 05-19-2008 11:34 AM

Ok, so it was designed to go on a bed with the narrow border against the wall and the wide one on the visible side!

kathy 05-19-2008 11:45 AM

she probably said, oh well, it's for charity, who cares?!
glad my name aint Charity, I'd be mad!
If that's not a slap in the face I don't know what would be. You should stick here with your friends and let them have each other.

I'm sorry for you because I know it had to hurt too.

Lisa 05-19-2008 11:50 AM

well the other girls are right, it's very pretty! do you think she had a senior moment? Did you ask her about it?

Janeen 05-19-2008 11:56 AM

oh believe me, I do not even want to go there :!: :!: :!:

quiltnana 05-19-2008 12:04 PM

You made the quilt for the right reasons and your part was beautiful. I don't think I would go there to ask what the hay either. Sometimes you just have to say no accounting for taste and leave it at that. Someone will still cherish it and see all the love you put into it. :) :) :) :)

Harmony 05-19-2008 12:04 PM

Your quilt is beautiful. If she'd finished it, it would be even more beautiful! Maybe she's dyslexic??? Or maybe just stupid....

Diamonds 05-19-2008 12:05 PM

I would be upset too... :(

pocoellie 05-19-2008 12:10 PM

I can't believe anyone could do that. It is a beautiful quilt though, and I certainly wouldn't have anything more to do with that group. Maybe it's a good idea though, that your name isn't mentioned, that way, no one asks you what you were thinking.

Cordelia 05-19-2008 12:24 PM

You know what I'm thinking? It looks shoddy. It looks like someone couldn't be bothered to do a proper job. The strip on one side offsets the center and it's just awful what she did to your quilt.

There's NO excuse for that one strip. You did the right thing in telling those ladies off. I wouldn't sew a single thing for them after that. That is so inexcusable, it isn't even fit to give to charity the way she altered it.

patricej 05-19-2008 01:00 PM

the answer is clear. the poor woman had obviously dived face-first into a big bowl of super-spiked after xmas eggnog. about 3 times a day for every day in the week before she added that strip.

she's probably still suffering the hangover. (well ... we can hope she is, anyway.   )

amma 05-19-2008 03:34 PM

I think your quilt is beautiful :D For whatever reason that woman did this to your quilt, I hope the quilt police come and get her soon! :x :x :x

Knot Sew 05-19-2008 03:48 PM

Sounds like maybe she didn't want to quilt any more for everyone....and this was her statement....tell them to give it back you want to fix a few spots. it is very pretty :D

tlrnhi 05-19-2008 06:48 PM

It's a very pretty quilt and I'm still trying to figure out WHY she did what she did. It's starting to give me a headache, so I'm not going to think about it anymore except to maybe think she thought she made a NEW pattern?

LovingStitches 05-19-2008 09:06 PM

I would have gone for the Jugular!

Celeste 05-19-2008 09:10 PM

Bizarre!

I couldn't possibly state it any better than anyone who already has posted!

barnbum 05-20-2008 02:34 AM

Wow. Strange. That was my "see something new every day" for today.

It's a gorgeous center--I just love those stars. And the colors. :!: :!:

Hey, Janeen how did you get the photo in the middle of your text?

reneebobby 05-20-2008 02:56 AM

Wow what a nice quilt but I figured out why they did that  That is the side that little ones will grab and hold on tight with there hand while sucking there thumb. Yeah, that's it. Okay not really but I tried. Otherwise such a beautiful quilt.

DazzleMe! 05-20-2008 02:59 AM

I am sorry for the inconsideration of the woman who did this to your beautiful quilt. Sometimes people act out in a manner that is odd to us...............I believe she is jelous of your quilting ability and feel inadiquate to yours. Maybe this is her way of weeding out the best of the group!

abacus 05-20-2008 06:13 AM

It's amazing to me that people will do "for charity" what they would not dream of doing for themselves. I have a client who works for a thrift shop, and he says that half of what they receive in charitable donations has to be thrown into the garbage.

Your quilt is beautiful -- even as it is. I just hope that this woman is not doing quilting for others (i.e., a business). But remember too that you had the joy of making a beautiful quilt, and the pleasure of giving it for someone else to enjoy. Sometimes we do things for the pleasure it gives US, rather than for the pleasure that someone else will get from it.

Also, don't discount the other ladies. THEY didn't do it. However, I would not allow this quilter to have access to any of my work.

Deb G 05-20-2008 07:23 AM

I can't imagine why someone would do something like that to such a pretty quilt. Did you ask her about it? She has got to be a french frie short of a happy meal.
Is it possible to take off the binding and add the border to the other side or are you out of fabric? I know it would be a big job to do that but just thought I'd ask.

Janeen 05-20-2008 09:15 AM

I don't have the quilt - it's in the hands of the 'group'

Believe me, I gave serious - very serious, consideration to doing just that - getting the quilt, taking that side aberration off and just binding that edge... but you know what? The more I thought about it the more I decided that, no, I'm not going to... why should I have to fix what she messed up?

This group has been around as a 'service' group for over 50 years and we are in the deep, deep south... and I guess they just don't want me and mine around.... (I have an adult handicapped daughter who also goes to the meetings - she is mildly mentally handicapped and is not obviously impaired - but is)
I talked to one of the women yesterday and asked her, "how am I supposed to react to this?" and her first words were 'don't let it run you out of the group'

well up until then I hadn't even thought about it like that, but ya know, sometimes I can be extremely naive and maybe that was the whole point???

if so, it's probably been very effective and successful :!:

Katrine 05-20-2008 09:34 AM

Silly, silly ladies - their loss.
There is a group about 30 kms from me. A couple of years ago I went to their annual exhibition. I spoke to their "leader" admiring all their work. When she found out I machined and didn't do everything by hand she physically sniffed at me and turned her back! (Not a french lady, but English)

vicki reno 05-20-2008 09:42 AM

I'd would have had to tie my hands behind my back so I wouldn't smack her! Some people obviousily believe that if it is for charity its not worth putting your best effort in it. I think what she did was hameful :!: :
I think it is still pretty but its a shame that she just tacked a piece on on one side!

Moonpi 05-20-2008 10:42 AM

I've never sentquilts out for quilting, which accounts for mt quilt-top collection. I don't mind giving stuff away, but to have it ruined by a stranger, then returned, would break my heart.

Missi 05-20-2008 12:42 PM

Janeen,
The quilt is soooo cute. At first I thought maybe she wanted to make one side the top, but counted the blocks are realized if that was her intention she put the strip on the wrong side :P

Hard lesson learned is all I can think of. If you stay active in the group you know to be careful and wary. We have a guild in town and they are rather particular about who they will let join. I got an informal invite but don't know if I even want to bother with them. You all are so much more fun :) :) :) :)

zyxquilts 05-20-2008 01:03 PM

You did a great job on it Janeen, for all the right reasons :-)
I think it would work perfectly on a day bed, with the extra blue border to the front of the day bed - what do you say? At least it's a little 'lemonade' from her lemons!

purplemem 05-20-2008 01:09 PM

I agree, that was very rude of her to do whatever? to your quilt.
Can you remove the added part?
Send it to me, I'll fix it.

I just love this quilt.
Mary Jane

quiltwoman 05-20-2008 01:11 PM

It is such cute fabric--why would they do that?

I feel your pain. Honestly, I doubt I would help out this group again. Besides, there are many other charities that would have loved to get your quilt.

Julie

estherblair 05-20-2008 05:25 PM

Your quilt is beautiful
All that work , :D :D :D

doowopddbop 05-22-2008 07:31 AM

I know, she added the large border so that it can be tucked around a pillow..... uh....

Sandi 05-23-2008 04:49 PM

Wow what a beauty...! even with the 1 wide side(???).. sturannngge.. :hunf: I'm sorry you went through this,, but I really LIKE this quilt..

You have given me an idea as to what to do with some of my Christmas stash!
