It's lovely to be back, thanks for your lovely compliments and although I can't spend the time I used to, I do check in and have a good nosey around to see what everyone is up to fairly regularly now

It is a similar process, but only uses triangles to form hexagons, which you sew together in half hexagon strips so no inset seams to deal with, the stack n whack is formed with triangles and rectangles to form a square I believe
 :D

Lovely to hear from you Jan!!

I actually got 'nearly' eight in one piece, as the last one had been cut a couple of inches short, so after using six for the hexagons I have one full panel left for the back and the slightly short panel that I may use to make a cushion to go with it as I think this will only turn out lap size anyway

:D

I have been lurking, but not enough time to post like I used to :(

Hi Val :D

It was a case of getting what I could, we only have one fabric shop which has a small collection of craft fabrics, I have no idea how long it will take me to find fabrics to finish it, I may just have to do a bit of on line fabric searching

Izy 06-29-2010 11:58 PM

Thanks all for your lovely comments, I will keep you updated with it's progress when I get time :D

Just to let all my friends know, John is coping really well with his chemo, has his last dose in a couple of weeks, so we are just trying our best to get on with our lives and making the most of what time he has left which the consultant now believe is likely to be longer than what they first predicted, all your positive vibes are working, thanks!! :D :D :D

What an exciting idea!

Butterflyspain 06-30-2010 12:58 AM

Next time you come over, you get the Tutorial sorted and I am in, so at least you have one to teach LOL.

I am sure lots of our ladies will be interested.

Psychomomquilter 06-30-2010 03:57 AM

Beautiful, much later, I will create one like it

lallyann 06-30-2010 04:31 AM

I'm sorry to hear what you and John are going through. I will be keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers!

I know this is a stupid question, but do you rotary cut the triangles? or do you trace them and then cut them out? My daughters and I are learning to quilt, and so far we've only done projects with strips or square shapes--ones that are somewhat easy to rotary cut. I have learned to buy extra when possible, because it never fails, I always manage to cut something wrong!! LOL!

BTW, I am pretty new to this board but I love it. I enjoy learning from others, and seeing their beautiful creativity!

Oh fantastic! I would never have thought to use a panel! Just awesome!

Thanks for your well wishes, it means such a lot to us both

Very simply, you use six pieces of identical fabric, using a panel means you have no hassle of finding the repeat pattern on the fabric. Next, you cut strips 3 & 3/4" across the width of the whole six layers together, then sub cut at 60 deg angle using the template, each stack of triangles forms each hexagon, every one different!!

Do a google search to see just what you can achieve with the right fabric!!

I joined this board as a novice too and have gained lots of lovely friends and learned so much from everyone too, but life gets in the way sometimes

:-D :(

Light bulb moment for me!! I don't know what I was thinking....you stack six panels together!! LOL! Thanks so much for the clarification!! I am definitely going to put this on my to-do list. I have to compete with my girlies for sewing time, and since they are 9 and 13 years old, I like to help them with the cutting and stuff like that. Everyday I plan to work on my quilts after they go to bed but by that time, I am too pooped to look at a sewing machine!! I do love that my girls enjoy sewing, so I don't really mind. Quilting has become our summertime activity this year. The temperatures here have been extremely hot, although it looks like we are in for a bit of a cool-down for the rest of this week--YEA! So we may get some outdoor time :) Thanks for taking time to explain that to me! I really appreciate it!

It's my pleasure to help!! I understand all about trying to quilt in high temperatures, as we have not long returned to live in the U.K., after spending nearly 4 years in Southern Spain, which is where I learnt about patchwork and quilting...here's a link to our group website:-

How sweet that both your daughter's having taken up quilting. I only have son's but my youngest son's girlfriend has caught the bug too, it is so lovely to have someone to share your passion with, Jess is in the process of making her first bargello and has become addicted to fabric too!!!

Good luck !!

I love it Izywhizy!!! I tried my hand at a OBW border and I just love the technique...I can't wait to clear some UFO's to do more. I hadn't thought about a panel...leave it to you to be so creative!

I like the subtle colors that result from this one..you know you could add blocks around the edges to enlarge it if you want

Izy, I have the same panel in pink, only one though. It will be a quilt for my DGD (4) who said, "Gramma, I NEED a new blanket." Your blocks are stunning. I would have never thought to use a panel.

Thanks for sharing. Very pretty.

kwilter 06-30-2010 11:43 AM

Please, I would be happy to learn what "OBW" stands for. There are so many of the acronyms I don't get! Thanks.

Oh I am so sorry...there has been so much talk of this I forgot that there may actually be newbies who haven't a clue!!

It stands for ONE BLOCK WONDER...It's a technique mastered by Maxine Rosenthal, who has a few books out about it :-D

Ninnie 06-30-2010 11:50 AM

I love the muted colors, and the way the tiny black outlines some of them. What a great choice . Still on my list of things to learn. One day I will get brave enough to cut one LOL.

I must admit, I was so scared of cutting those panels, but no pain - no gain Ninnie!! I wasn't sure if the black outline was going to be a help or hindrance...but it does create a lot of interest on each of the blocks, I have been playing and rearranging the blocks on and off all blinking day...STILL not sure how to lay them all out, any help would be appreciated

 :-)

grammyj 06-30-2010 12:09 PM

OH I don't know how you could cut up that cute little fairy.
But it does make a nice obw

Butterflyspain 06-30-2010 12:10 PM

I will answer you quickly for Izy-- OBW stands for One Block Wonder.

Izy, Welcome back.
That is adorable. Who would have thunk it?

Rhonda 06-30-2010 03:43 PM

Izy I love the one with the faces!! I didn't see that one before. I would have a hard time cutting the panels up too! My granddaughter would love the panel just the way it is before you cut it. It makes me think of fairy stories I read as a child.

sandpat 06-30-2010 05:16 PM

Hmmmm Izy..you are doing the right thing..arrange..walk away, come back, re-arrange...I did that for the longest time on the border that I made. The panel really made for a hard one to arrange, but it is very unique too...I love the faces..the one next to it..the darker orange looking...it seems to need to go somewhere else though....its too dark next to the faces I think. :D

All Thumbs 06-30-2010 05:45 PM

Hello Izy - glad to meet you. I am fairly new here and I gather that you have been absent for some time. Blessings to you and your husband for the cancer that has stricken will surely be on its way out soon. Both my husband and I have had cancer within the last two years. My radiation ended this last March but I am still fighting a bacterial skin infection. As you well know, it's a long row to hoe.

However, quilting has eased my way and I love your OBW. I would never have thought that panel would turn out such a beautiful, calming quilt top. The hexagon with the child's face is outstanding. Like I say, I would never have chosen this for OBW. Congrats on the challenge and giving a bunch of us further ideas. I already have in the back of my mind my LQS's panels which will surely go on sale soon. lol

KGoodhand 06-30-2010 06:21 PM

Izy, welcome back! You are doing an amazing job on those blocks!!! I can hardly wait to see the finished project!!! I have to work up the nerve to try this technique someday soon!

quilting librarian 06-30-2010 07:13 PM

Wow - I never thought of using panels for a OBW! What a great idea. I look forward to seeing yours completed!

amandasgramma 06-30-2010 07:15 PM

Whod've guess that would make such a great OBW!!! COOL! good job!

Sheree from Chicago 06-30-2010 08:12 PM

It's going to be a beauty!

Gwyn 06-30-2010 09:56 PM

You are making a beautiful quilt. I don't think I could have cut the panel up. It is so cute. Could you 'see' what it would look like before you cut it?

trif 06-30-2010 10:05 PM

I've never seen obw before, I'm so impressd, looks like a puzzle, fitting pieces together. Is this your first one? Am I the only quilter here living under a rock, where have I been, I feel so left out. I need to put this on my attempt to make list (which keeps growing). Thanks for sharing

I love the panel and how it is looking so far. (ok you asked for an opinion so...here goes) I would lay out the hex's next to the 7th panel that you got for the back and "work it into" the whole top. Of course if it does not look too good, you can scrap the idea before "cutting", etc. etc. Hope to see the whole thing finished.

I started an OBW a couple of summers ago, but was only working on it at a yearly retreat so haven't finished it yet. Yours is getting me to thinking of picking it back up and finishing it. Hope to see the final quilt. Ellen

deirdre ann 06-30-2010 10:48 PM

absolutly gorgous quilt, izy!! excuse my quilting ignorance, - but whats an 'OBW'? : ))
