OBW on the front, hex on the back!

It's my first OBW, an Asian fabric and the many colors made it a challenge to arrange. I rejected a lot of blocks. Instructions (this was a surprise to me as I was hoping to have great fun rearranging) said the straight of grain had to be on outside of the hex so there was no option to rearrange the triangles. The back is a huge hexagon. I mainly outline quilted the back and meandered around the hex center points to avoid the seams...and because my quilting skill is limited.
Now for an octagon!

It is beautiful. I love the fabrics. Great job!!

Grandma Bonnie 05-20-2013 05:40 AM

Beautiful ~ front AND back!! You did a great job!

vivianv 05-20-2013 05:44 AM

Very pretty indeed! Love the fabric. I would have trouble deciding which was the front.

feline fanatic 05-20-2013 05:48 AM

I really like this. The back is ingenious.

mighty 05-20-2013 06:21 AM

So beautiful!!!!!!

QuiltE 05-20-2013 06:46 AM

Beautiful!

Only one problem ... you can't see both sides at the same time! :D

alwayslearning 05-20-2013 06:53 AM

WOW! I think that says it.

ruthrings 05-20-2013 07:10 AM

I just bought fabric for a OBW and now I wish I had brought extra for a back like yours, but the shop is too far away. Really neat. I understand the logic behind having the straight grain on the outside of the hex, but I've made several of these and never heard that before. It really is fun rearranging the triangles. You just have to be careful not to stretch the bias.

MartiMorga 05-20-2013 07:15 AM

Interesting and lovely. Good Job!

Treasureit 05-20-2013 07:17 AM

That is really nice...next time I make one I am looking at the Asian fabrics!

PaperPrincess 05-20-2013 07:26 AM

Wonderful job! As the book states, you will get less distortion if you arrange the triangles so the straight of grain is on the outside edge. if you rearrange your blocks a lot, this helps keep everything from stretching, especially your first OBW. Having said this, however, if you are careful, you really can arrange the triangles any way you want. Just handle gently. Starch helps. Can't wait to see your next one!

I love the look of your oriental fabrics.....unfortunately I don't have enough yardage in my stash of orientals to do one.

I did purchase enough of a Hoffman Christmas print.....now need to get cutting!

crafty pat 05-20-2013 08:45 AM

That is so beautiful. That fabric is just right for that pattern.

Quilter 65 05-20-2013 08:45 AM

That is very pretty fabric and a pretty quilt. The back is also amazing. Truly a reversible one and trouble deciding which side I like better.

Diane007 05-20-2013 08:59 AM

very nice....

mom-6 05-20-2013 09:04 AM

Beautiful quilt!

When I made my OBW / kaleidoscope ones I only read the instructions as far as how to do the cutting so I was not inhibited by the requirement to keep the straight of the grain on the outside. Lol!

I do agree that it does probably make it easier to join the hexes together, but I didn't experience any major difficulty except when I tried to add a border and had trouble with getting the setting pieces right.

Jingle 05-20-2013 09:10 AM

Absolutely beautiful. Love the colors.

QuiltnNan 05-20-2013 09:19 AM

very nicely done

quiltstringz 05-20-2013 09:36 AM

that is wonderful - I love both sides. I am with Ruthrings, I have done several and turned my any way I wanted with no issues. You have to deal with bias on 2 sides so not sure it really makes a difference, just need to be careful

SulaBug 05-20-2013 10:52 AM

It is absolutely gorgeous. I have always been fascinated with this pattern. Hopefully someday I will give it a try myself. Thank you for the inspiration!!
:D :D :D :D

dilyn 05-20-2013 10:54 AM

I Love both sides! Now that is gorgeous!

Cris 05-20-2013 12:15 PM

Completly fabulous!!!

SueSew 05-20-2013 04:43 PM

Thanks for the comments - I will try an octagon next and adjust the tirangles as several of you suggested. It will give me a better shot of having more of the blocks acceptable.

And fess-up time .... I had a fear the front would be dreadful or I wouldn't have wracked my brain to make a good-looking back 'just in case'!!!

Pollytink 05-20-2013 10:58 PM

That is SO beautiful, front and back!!!

MissBarbQuilts 05-21-2013 12:54 AM

This is such a beautiful quilt. I have not been brave enough to do an OBM yet.

coachmatthewsvhs 05-21-2013 03:10 AM

I love your obw..... I never paid any attention to the grain, just watched the stretch. Your arrangement is perfect. Really find the fabric to be outstanding.

SewFarBehind 05-21-2013 03:16 AM

sew_Tracy 05-21-2013 03:27 AM

It came out really pretty! I started one and ended up shelving it because I hated the color arrangement.

AlienQuilter 05-21-2013 03:55 AM
