I did this one at our quilt retreat in March, did I put it on yet? It was a paper pieced pattern and I don't think I will do another. Took me the whole weekend to finish the top. I'm not crazy about the blue corners, think I'll change those out. Not in too much of a hurry to finish it. ha But it is pretty I think.

nana2 08-01-2009 12:14 PM

Actually, the picture shows the blue to be just perfect. Of course I am a fan of blue. I love this pattern.

Shemjo 08-01-2009 12:15 PM

I like it! And I love paper piecing. I find my points are better with pp. If you change out the blues, what color are you going to use in exchange? I wouldn't change them out, but if they make you unhappy, change them.

I love it! That look is just so amazing. I saw one hanging up in a LQS by where I work and knew I needed to make one. Now that I've seen yours, I really want to make one. I have got to stop looking at pictures here!!!!

It was a kit from Connecting Threads, they might still have it. Just a wall hanging size.

I was thinking maybe a brown and blue 4 patch or something similar. I love the browns.

Baren*eh*ked_canadian 08-01-2009 12:38 PM

I absolutely love this pattern!

sharon b 08-01-2009 12:47 PM

Love the pattern and colors. It looks different from every direction and seems to flow in either waves or circles. Will have to go look at connecting threads !

I see the blue corners but they aren't bad because they help pull the light blue color out into the borders. so think on removing them a bit more. perhaps you could make the blue into a sq within a square? I'd still like to see that blue out there somewhere. or maybe just use that blue for the binding.

BlueChicken 08-01-2009 02:05 PM

That's gorgeous!

I agree about the blue corners though, the colour is right but the squares are too solid, too plain, when there's so much movement and pattern in everything else.

I would use the blue fabric still, but break the corners up into smaller pieces along with the brown. Mimicing (sp) some of the movement from the body of the quilt would be cool.

NorBanaquilts 08-01-2009 02:27 PM

I love the quilt, even the blue squares :D

wesing 08-01-2009 05:00 PM

My favorite pattern! We have to make one "someday." This is beautiful. I think the cornerstones would complement the quilt better if they weren't so solid, but the color is right on. Good job!

katier825 08-01-2009 05:30 PM

I think it looks great just as you have it! I understand how you feel though. I do look at the finished quilts sometimes and thought I should have used a different color/layout. I have not undone any though. I'd rather start over than spend that much time with the seam ripper!

amma 08-01-2009 06:10 PM

Very Pretty!!! Love those colors!!! :D :D :D

ScubaK 08-01-2009 07:15 PM

I love it!
It is one of those patterns that I wanna try...
You can always send it to me!!!!

Jim's Gem 08-01-2009 07:48 PM

Beautiful, I want to make on of those someday too!!!

Marcia 08-01-2009 08:03 PM

I love this quilt---I have always loved the way this quilt "moves". It is on my "to-do" list, too!!

sharon b 08-01-2009 09:28 PM

Does the pattern have another name ? I went to google and typed in Ocean Waves and it came up with another pattern :-o And I couldn't find a kit a connecting threads

I love this pattern. You did a great job of piecing. And I like the color combination. Is it the blue corners in the border that you want to change? I might do something different there also. I think the plain blue needs to be broken up a bit. Maybe use one of the square blocks with the blue corner. That would give it a touch of blue and also tie in the other colors. Just my 2 cents worth.

Yarn or Fabric 08-02-2009 03:12 AM

I swear I just saw that quilt in a magazine at the library book sale yesterday. I didn't buy the pattern though since I'm not a pp fan but it is really really sharp. I want to say it was in a Fons and Porters quilting mag. I did pick up a few of the magazines - everything was a quarter and there were 3 magazines with projects I felt I would make... but this one I don't think made it in to my pile. I kind of wish I did now :(

Bevanger 08-02-2009 04:32 AM

I love it. I really think the blue is perfect in it.

Knot Sew 08-02-2009 05:09 AM

It sure looks like water moving...i would leave it the way it is. I love it. It looks like a prize winner :D

Harmony 08-02-2009 07:17 AM

I love your quilt. The pattern fascinates me--I love the way you see curves even though it's all straight llines!

Iluv2quilt 08-02-2009 08:04 AM

Your Ocean Waves quilt is fantastic! What a fun thing to do at a retreat. I don't yet know how to paper piece. Was it hard to do? I think the blue gives the quilt a cool feeling and looks good.

It was very hard for me to do. I hate sewing upside down as you do with pp. I had only looked at the finished pattern when I ordered the kit and didn't realize it was pp. I knew that if I didn't do it at the retreat it would just sit in my sewing room and never get done. My friends at the retreat cheered me on until I got it done. Took me the whole retreat to finish it. There are 8 of us that go. But now that it is done I really like it, wouildn't do another pp though I don't thnk. I prefer foundation instead, you can see what you are doing. Soon as I figure a different block for those blue corners, I will put it together.

That is the name I know it as, try about.com, or, quilterscache.com and see if they don't bring it up. Connecting threads must have sold out, sorry.

motomom 08-02-2009 10:20 AM

I love this one. I have always loved this pattern and will do one someday! Thanks for the inspiration!

mathteacher 08-02-2009 11:48 AM

It looks like it could be Storm at Sea - or some variation.

Great job with your paper-piecing!

gaigai 08-02-2009 12:06 PM

Pat, I love the blue! I think it gives the quilt "motion" just like waves. Beautiful! But if you really don't like it, I'll be happy to take it off your hands! :D :D

azam 08-02-2009 01:39 PM

Very nice, I like it!!!

jacquemoe 08-02-2009 02:12 PM

Hi Pat, what size is the quilt? I think it's a really cool design. I think the blue is just enough. All your intersections look so perfect. Tell me why you wouldn't do another paper piecing? I haven't tried paper piecing so tell me why I might not want to try it.

wesing 08-02-2009 07:37 PM

Sharon -

The pattern is usually known as "Storm at Sea." I actually posted a question about the pattern when I first joined; if you click my name (wesing) you can find the thread and there are some links to other threads with more pictures of other quilts in this pattern. It is traditionally done in blues and white and looks like its namesake. I hope my wife and I can make one some day.

THANK YOU very much.. I just love this pattern and have never seen it before. And the colors it is done in are great . I think it adds to the wavy feel

shaverg 08-02-2009 08:27 PM

I think it is fantastic. But that is because Ocean Waves is one of my favorite patterns. Great job.

Martina 08-02-2009 08:56 PM

I think it is beautiful with the blue!! I love it :-)

littlehud 08-03-2009 08:27 AM

I think it looks wonderful just the way it is. Great quilt.

Quilt4u 08-03-2009 08:34 AM

Wow, this thing really has movement! I love it!

Alaskan lady 08-03-2009 10:25 AM

Love your quilt. I'm currently working on this pattern and I know it as the Storm at Sea....... Mine is a miniature and will be in scrappy blues and whites.
