I bought some buttons at an estate sale and this one looks interesting but I am not sure what it could be made of. It looks like it is a carving that has been placed on a backing then brass wrapped around it. Any ideas? its about 5/8" wide

Mariposa 06-18-2011 05:55 PM

Not sure, but it's interesting!

fleurdelisquilts.com 06-18-2011 05:56 PM

I don't know, either, but I would love it! It's just beautiful. Can you imagine carving that center part?

nlgh 06-18-2011 05:56 PM

I don't know either, but it is beautiful.

Linda-in-iowa 06-18-2011 05:57 PM

It's very pretty. Too bad there is only one.

shawnemily 06-18-2011 05:57 PM

HMMMM
I dont know either but I am sure there is someone on here that will have the answer!!

sueisallaboutquilts 06-18-2011 06:16 PM

Look at the detail!!!!!!!!! Very nice.

feline fanatic 06-18-2011 06:25 PM

What a beautiful button. The carving would be a stunning quilting motif.

running1 06-18-2011 06:44 PM

ooooo... so pretty!!!

quiltingnonie 06-18-2011 06:45 PM

Beautiful! Old buttons are so unique. Just can't find that kind of craftsmanship in the buttons of today.

KathyAire 06-18-2011 06:57 PM

It looks like an ashtray.

Some time ago I was reading a book about the wealthier yachting crowd who made it a point of honor to wear the most expensive and lovely buttons they could find on their yachting jackets.
Could this be one of them?

wvdek 06-18-2011 08:10 PM

Maybe a tin press set in the brass(?) or backing.

Looks like it is from the turn of the century to teh 20's to me.

Wish I had it in my button jar. Sure pretty.

slk350 06-18-2011 08:48 PM

No clue, but very pretty

JanetM 06-18-2011 09:23 PM

Is that a button or is it a wax sealer used to seal envelopes?

It's a button for sure-----------you can tell by the 2nd picture. Just a very nice button would be my guess.

blueangel 06-18-2011 09:28 PM

Pretty

Tippy 06-18-2011 09:39 PM

It rather reminds me of Lapis.. I know it can be carved into interesting shapes, but would have to see it in person. Does it feel smooth, or does it feel like pottery? also rather reminds me of jasperware.

TacoMama 06-18-2011 09:40 PM

Have no clue what it is, but it's quite unique!

No clue, but it sure is pretty, hope someone figures it out....love to find treasures

SueDor 06-19-2011 03:38 AM

Is it a mold for wax or buttons?

Didn't see JanetM answer.

quilt3311 06-19-2011 04:12 AM

It could be valuable to a collector. Not sure where one would look to find a collector though. There should be sites online about buttons.

coachmatthewsvhs 06-19-2011 04:13 AM

my oval picture frames have the same kind of relief on them.... I think they are a kind of plaster

quilter68 06-19-2011 04:17 AM

Jan in VA,

Thank you for posting these sites. I could spend an hour just looking. There is so much more that I don't know.

Don't know but it is GORGEOUS!

twinkie 06-19-2011 06:18 AM

My DH says he thinks it is ceramic center with the brass front edge and backing of the button crimped over it to hold it in place. I myself have no clue, but it sure is beautiful.

maryb119 06-19-2011 06:47 AM

I don't know but it's sure pretty!

Oh, I just love it, but, as a new collector, I have no clue what it is. I'd love it if others would post photos of their favorites, too. Here are a couple of my recent very inexpensive finds in antique stores. The cream colored ones are bakelite and are 1.5 inches across. And the card with pink heart centers are about 1 inch. I just love them, but have no clue what I will do with them. I'm open for suggestions!!!

This board is such an enabler - I love buttons and now I have bookmarked Jan in VA's suggestions and others showing their collections - I am not getting any quilting done today!

those are beautiful...I buy buttons and resell them on ebay. I currently have the one in question on ebay for 14.99. Since I dont know what it is made of and haven't been able to find anything like it, I also asked if anyone knew what it was or more about it to please let me know. So far no bids.

hobbykat1955 06-19-2011 07:26 AM

After yrs of antiqueing and having tons of buttons from my grandmother who was born in 1903...It's just a nice button probably from around 1910-20 era...

SharonAnne 06-19-2011 07:52 AM

Oh gosh. I should start selling my stuff on eBay, too. Have tons of things, but no time to figure out how to sell. But I sure know how to BUY!!! Is it difficult to get started selling?

Blinkokr 06-19-2011 07:52 AM

Have a Blessed day

not really difficult, just do some research as to what your item might be worth and post it accordingly. It is fun to watch and see what happens.

I was given a gallon jar of old buttons, wish I found something like that in it. But I am happy with what I do have.
