OMG! It's a Suitcase

Have been making quilted purses while my shoulder is giving me trouble...I have come to absolutely love creating the patterns from pictures but this one turned into a challenge...my grand daughter has me around her finger so I can't say no..she sent me a picture of a tote she wanted that was from Vera Bradley's Get Carried Away and of course Memaw can do anything.. yeah right! I asked her if she was sure she wanted one that big..with 3 kids, two of them toddlers, she needs it...just didn't realize how big it really was until I got it finished. LOL Made this prototype inspired by that tote. Far from a replica but that's good...Used material from my stash but had to get creative to come up with enough material that would go together since I didn't have the 1 1/2 yards of both exterior and interior to make it right. It didn't help that I cut two of the pieces wrong...She loved it and is off to find the material she wants hers made in... Then of course there is a pic of my product tester Ishi.
If you make it they will get in it.. The other pic's are the purses I was making before this...Bucket purses...Inspired by the $1,350 suede one on Nordstrom's site Used a bolo tie and grommets...and the Vera Bradley Cargo Sling but went a totally different direction when I started sewing...just didn't want to put the outside pockets on and cover up the material I just loved... Thought the diagonal quilting would be easy but turned out not to be...marking it at 1 3/4 in and keep it straight was challenging too.

Anyway hope you enjoy these.

I love them, is it me or do the "draw string" remind you of an owl?

Great bags.

The last photo is the best, & so like them. Thanks for sharing.

I love making bags. Yours came out very nice and I am sure that the new owners will love them too. I love the little kitty pic, it thinks anything you spent all that time on was for her/him. Typical...

Me, too! Great bags--I especially like the one with the cat embellishment. :)

Dolphyngyrl 12-03-2014 06:53 PM

Don't let the cat out of the bag LOL

They are very nice. I've not done purses but have made several rather large totes.

They are all lovely!

mea12 12-04-2014 03:26 AM

I didn't see the owl til you said something but it sure does look that way!! Memaw your bags are GREAT!!!

luvstoquilt 12-04-2014 07:25 AM

Yep! Looks like an Owl...all are lovely. Your granddaughter is right on target. Looks to me like you can do anything! Your work is inspiring!

Daylesewblessed 12-04-2014 08:09 AM

Your bags are great! I flew on small planes over Thanksgiving where all roller bag carry-ons were green tag checked - that's where you wait and pick up your bag on the jetway. I had one extremely tight connection and didn't want to risk the carry-on wait, so I packed my smaller purse and other essentials in a large tote. It worked great! If it fits under the seat, it can go on the plane carried by you. Your bags would be perfect for that purpose!

nativetexan 12-04-2014 08:25 AM

Very cute!!! yep, one of my cats got into a grocery tote I made. But then, she loves the large empty cardboard box down here too!!

IshtarsMom 12-04-2014 01:08 PM

Glad you liked them...If I just sit and think of all the things that hurt I go nuts so digging in and figuring stuff like this out saves my sanity during the bad times...I documented pretty well the patterns so will be happy to share if you pm me..Sharing is a big part of the joy for me....right now they are set for my 13x19 in printer but can be adapted and some you could just use the rotary cutter and measurements. And yep the two bucket purses looks like owls...much to my chagrin. The fabrics are all scrounged from the local thrift...(the little bucket) I fell in love with this little bitty piece of fabric not knowing what I would ever do with it...the purse really is too small for much... Thank you for looking...

AngeliaNR 12-04-2014 05:40 PM

I love that they look like owls--fun!

Fotoula 12-04-2014 05:48 PM

That's what I thought too when I first saw it. Very nice

Diane K M 12-05-2014 03:42 AM

I also would like to now how you made the plaid one, in particular. I have made all my own purses for several years now. I cannot remember when I bought my last purse in the store. Also understand about your recovery. My shoulder was repaired with a patch 3 months ago. I have another 3 months before I can even lift it from the shoulder joint. Long road and very boring!

AnnT 12-05-2014 04:09 AM

Great bags! My kids and grandkids (and a few friends!) also think I can do anything. I so hate to disillusion them. I enjoy the challenge of making something from a picture. There are far more good ones than fails!

Texas_Sue 12-05-2014 05:37 AM

Great job!

Susan

P.S. I'm a cat momma too. Love them!

Charleen DiSante 12-05-2014 05:48 AM

Great job coming up with the way to make these bags!

callen 12-05-2014 06:17 AM

Wow, terrific bags & I agree the drawstring does resemble an owl !!

quilt1950 12-05-2014 06:17 AM

That was my first thought.
