Here's an OBW I just finished for a good friend in the UK who breeds dogs. I FMQ'd it and only my second attempt - far from perfect but I'm happy to send it! Thanks so much to Dunster and Jan who both showed OBWs a while back that inspired my choice of fabric and the idea of leaving a full block of the original fabric. I'm showing some close ups of the detail as well. :D

One Block Woofers - couldn't resist calling it that!

That is so cute! I never would have thought to try that type of print in such a quilt. Nice job quilting too!

Quilt4u 07-29-2009 01:05 AM

Very nice.

Mamagus 07-29-2009 01:09 AM

That's so beautiful! What a great idea! Love the fabric choice and the result.

Hi Katie! I wouldn't have thought of this fabric either but Dunster posted a pic a while ago using this fabric - same range but smaller dogs - so I 'copied'! Can't take any credit myself, I'm afraid! Thanks for your kind comment on the quilting! It's a bit like patting your head and rubbing your belly for me but I'm getting better! :D

Thanks mamgus and quilt4u! :D These are such fun - I've got fabric to make more - just got other things to finish first, but these are a REAL favourite! :D

Vickymomof6 07-29-2009 01:55 AM

That's so nice. I never really "GOT" the concept of 1 block wonders but they sure turn out beautiful quilts.

You friend is going to love it, looks great!

youme 07-29-2009 02:53 AM

K3n, I am planning to try one block wonder method and a stack of 6 layers of same printed strips has been sitting in my sewing room for a while. What is the length of the each side of regular triangle you used for a piece?

reneebobby 07-29-2009 02:58 AM

That turned out so cool.

sew4fun 07-29-2009 03:04 AM

Wow, who would have thought that fabric would turn out like that!

Iluv2quilt 07-29-2009 03:32 AM

You did wonderfully on this quilt! I just love the pattern, do you have the link to it?

Thanks :-)

STAR 07-29-2009 03:43 AM

That quilt is AWESOME!!! you did a great job, your friend will love it. It can be admired far away and up close.

I cut the strips 3 3/4 " wide here's a pic - the triangles are 60°

Suzie - as far as I know, there isn't a free pattern available anywhere online but I would recommend the book One Block Wonders by Maxine Rosenthal which explains the technique really clearly. Her second book One Block Wonders Encore also tells how to make the hollow cubes shown in one pf my pics above. It also gives an overview of the technique so I guess you could manage with just the second book but I'd say get both - the first alos describes the octogan method - these are hexagons.

Thanks Kn3. I really appreciate it, I've bookmarked this for later so I can look on Amazon for the books.

Chele 07-29-2009 04:40 AM

Very cute! I think you could stare at the blocks for days.

Very funky quilt!!!!!!!! Now that I have a dog of my own I want to make a special quilt for my little girl. Maybe Santa might bring her one!

dunster 07-29-2009 06:09 AM

I LOVE your placement of the blocks. And that is a great border fabric. These quilts are so much fun!

Sometimes JoAnns has the first OBW book, so check there if you're looking for it.

Great title too!

sewjoyce 07-29-2009 06:14 AM

That is so cute!!! I love the way the blocks turned out!

mytwopals 07-29-2009 06:30 AM

I love this quilt. And being a dog lover makes it even more special.

billswife99 07-29-2009 08:27 AM

Oh for fun! I love the woofers name! I have heard of a quilter using potatoe fabric to make one of these. Yes, I said potatoes. I haven't seen it yet but I bet it is awesome!

Yes, I was pleased with the border fabric - I took some of the original fabric on my trip to Belgium recently and found it in a little LQS there! :D So the dog fabric came from the USA, the border from Belgium, the quilt was made in France and now it's off to England! :D

Bevanger 07-29-2009 09:35 AM

That is so cool. I really love it. I sure wish I could find fabric with Pomeranians

Rhonda 07-29-2009 10:17 AM

Well K3n I feel really proud that i had a vote in the name! It is really terrific!! I love the way it came out! I really laughed when you first mentioned One Block Woofers it is so apt!!! I love the quilt!!

A truely well traveled, international quilt!!! I love it!! 8) 8) 8) I had never noticed one before with the original fabrics in blocks incorporated into it. Good Job!!! Very Inspiring, too :D :D :D

Moncia 07-29-2009 12:47 PM

WOW!

kd124 07-29-2009 02:23 PM

AWESOME!!! Good to know she put how to do the cubes in the encore book. Now I will have to get that book. I made cubes in my last one, I sat and played with them until I got what I wanted. I would post a pic but----Long story short--I forgot to take pics before I left it at her business (she was on vacation) and now she hasn't seen it. We live in different states and that was why I left it there.

Mousie 07-29-2009 05:15 PM

woof! woof! K! just think....you could take a picture of somebody's dog, and copy it on fabric, and make these blocks out of that! I think?
couldn't you
was it a flash of brilliance? or just a flash in the pan?
yours are great, know she will love it. :D

littlehud 07-29-2009 08:18 PM

Great job on the woofers,

I just picked up another piece today that I thought would do good for the OBW, Can't wait to see if it works.
