I have been seeing all the great finds that people have posted from thrift stores, so I decided to give it a try myself.

I went shopping over the weekend and stopped in at a fairly new thrift store.

I found a package marked material for $3.99 and it was full of calico fabric.

Imagine my surprise when I got home, to find that it was an estimated total of about 12 yds!!!!

what a find. Enjoy!

Man I really need to find one of these thrift shops. You are all so very lucky to have shops with these kinds of treasures.

AAHHhhhhhh, another one joined our bargain hunter group! I've got to go grocery shopping today and thought that a trip to Goodwill wouldn't be that far out of the way. Then if I go to Goodwill, Salvation Army thrift store is nearby...... Our Goodwill sells their fabric for 42 or 72 cents a yard. I've often wondered how they came up with that price.

Looks like you got a marvelous bargain. Congratulations.

Bevanger 05-03-2010 07:25 AM

wow, good for you. :-D

dkabasketlady 05-03-2010 07:50 AM

when I go in the junk shops I look for large skirts that are cotton or large dresses. They can cut up into a nice size piece of fabric. I also check out the bedding. I have found lap size throws that are one piece of cotton print. Sheets are great for backings on a quilt or for piecing if the sheet is 100% cotton. Larger size blouses can be a source too of good piecing cotton fabric. Also watch for the sales they post. Our Good Will will mark stuff down on certain days.

Well, I'm collecting blues for a blue and yellow quilt, but I don't know about the browns yet.

Lilaciris 05-03-2010 05:45 PM

The place was called the Community Thrift Store and there are a whole bunch them located in about 8 states, FL, NJ, PA, LA, CO, CA, MI, and OR.

Me Too. I don't generally find much at the Goodwill but at Community Thrift I can usually make a good haul.

I love thrift shops, but I've never looked for fabric. Guess I'll need to make a trip.

Gayle 05-05-2010 07:14 AM

Great find! Lucky you! I sometimes find fabric in thrift stores too but not at that price!

borntoquilt 05-05-2010 07:34 AM

Well! the "word" must be out at all my thrift stores, cause all I ever find is polyester KNIT in some pretty strange colors. I WILL keep looking....

aussiequilter 05-05-2010 05:05 PM

Wowsers! A find like that would just about pay for the plane fare.
I've never seen anything like that in a thrift shop here; though one day I just know that's exactly what's going to happen to my entire stash: somebody is going to get lucky -unless I make it clear to DD that I want to take it with me. Now there's an idea.
I hasten to add, my preference is to get through it myself and I still have a long way to go.
Well done. Great find. Enjoy it.

adrianlee 05-05-2010 05:46 PM

:P

seabolt22 05-06-2010 09:59 AM

You have to be a frequent shopper at thrift stores and yard and estate sales. I sometimes go to several each week for several weeks before I find a good deal. Persistance is the answer.

JJean 05-06-2010 10:24 AM

Lucky you! I'm happy for you! :-D

kacy 49 05-06-2010 10:33 AM
