What about in the first layout moving each of the two bottom hearts over one vertical column so the hearts are in the outside columns and the 2 middle columns? It would then be balanced.

How about just doing the blocks on the outside with hearts.

Then if you alternate diagonal rows, i.e. don't put hearts in the next row of light blocks, but then make another row in the following diagonal row, that will use up exactly 20 hearts!

i think i would use just 1 in the bottom corner with there names & the date on it.
of course, my applique isn't all that hot, so that could be why i like just one. |
