There is always more than one way to do things. But, if you were following a pattern such as you did and decided you wanted a wide border, this is one way you could handle that. Cut strips of the top border fabric as large as you want plus 1/2" for seam allowance. Cut strips of backing the same size. Cut strips of batting 1/4" less.

Lay top fabric right sides together over your top. Lay backing right sides together over the back. Stitch 1/4" seam. Without opening up your front and back yet, whip stitch the batting to the edge of the seam. Then open up your back and open up your top and smooth them all out flat.

Stitch about 1/8" from the edge to keep everything together. Do your other sides the same way. Then add a french fold binding, or whatever method you like. At this point you could be done or you could add more quilting in your border.

Confusing? Hope not.

Don't change anything. It is beautiful the way that it is.
