We have one shop in the main town of Torre Del Mar, it is not a dedicated quilt shop but she does have a limited selection of fabric and notions etc..Its about half hours drive from here. The next one is in Malaga city, about 45 mins drive away..we have to pay between 14 and 18 euros a metre...way too expensive for my meagre quilting budget

k3n 02-11-2009 01:10 PM

Prices are about the same here, so it's mostly online for me. My nearest shop is in Jarnac, near Cognac so I can always kill 2 birds with 1 stone!!

Looks great and your son sure looks happy to have it!!! Hope your batting gets there soon, nothing like a young man to be breathing down your neck to have it finished!!!

Butterflyspain 02-11-2009 02:25 PM

Wow K3, didnīt you shift on that one. No wonder you have a happy smiling little one.

Nice quilt. Wish I could get into the hang of those but its just too much effort to sort out that great heap I get. I think Izy loves me cause I give them to her to sort out :D

Looks like you have the same problem in France as we do here in spain its a bummer trying to find nice fabric in a hurry. I buy of the net as well. found a nice one the other day have you tried Fabric Depot in the USA, good service and good quality fabrics, they had a sale on when I bought last week. Can recommend them

Oh, K!!!! I just checked this thread again today and found out that you have finished your son's quilt!! It is fabulous! And nothing is better than that great happy smile on his face!!

I hope your batting arrives soon so that you can get it finished for him.

butterflywing 02-15-2009 09:58 AM

quick!!! come to my house and cut my scraps into strips for me too.

i'm only a hop, skip and jump away.

Mousie 02-15-2009 08:47 PM

k, I'm saving strips for a someday string quilt.
Yours is fantastic. Kids did great and they are sooo cute. what a big smile when you finished top.
How do you know which order to put the strips in?
Or do you just go with what looks good? I'm like you, I will want strips to be same width too. I see pics in my qu mags with wonky squares etc. that ppl do that way on purpose and I think, that's fine for them, but makes me cringe...I do it all too easily not trying to, lol.
Boy, when you make your mind up to do something, there's no stopping you girl. I need some of that tonic. What's it called...love of a child?

I'll be on the next plane  :D

I just let the kids pick 'em, quiltncrazy, although sometimes their choices made me cringe! :? But it's SOOOOO scrappy it kind of works!

I'm wondering what do you do with the blocks after you finish? With the muslin on the back, do you still sew together like regular blocks, then batting and backing? Won't it be too thick to sew the blocks together? I'm looking at my strips and wanting to one too! Terri

k3n 02-16-2009 08:13 AM

Terri, the muslin I used was very light weigght and loose weave so I just joined the blocks right side together, 1/4" seam in the normal way. The machine did 'grumble' a little here and there but I think this was more to do with all those seams than the extra muslin! It is a little thicker of course and I haven't batted and backed yet so i don't know how the quilting will work. I'll probably machine quilt the blocks maybe along the 'common' orange strips that give the sashing effect then hand quilt the border, which is only single fabric thickness. I'm waiting for batting to come but I'll let you know how I get on! My view was it's only scraps and a couple of days work so lets just wing it!

K x

PS My son is insisting on a piece of (thick) plaid flannel for the back - to add to the potential problems!!!

LOL, butterflywing! can't volunteer to chicken-sit, got allergies, but I agree, k. while your looking for a chicken-sitter, don't ask one person after another...will you chicken-sit?...will you chicken-sit?...will you....

Ms Grace 02-16-2009 07:26 PM

Very nice. I must try this!
Thanks! :-)

ScrapQuilter 02-16-2009 08:06 PM

love string quilts........ have made a couple and they go so fast.
Good way to use all those strips of leftovers.
Will you do this as a quilt so you go quilt???????

kd124 02-16-2009 11:47 PM

K x

butterflywing 02-17-2009 08:47 AM

think fertilizer and wonderful veggies in the summer. and hold your nose!

k3n 02-17-2009 09:26 AM

Absolutely butterflywing - it goes straight in the compost heap and makes lovely stuff!

K x

butterflywing 02-17-2009 10:14 AM

okaaaay. we can call it stuff if you want to.

k3n 02-17-2009 11:02 AM

my kids call it pooh - shall we leave it there?! lol

K x

butterflywing 02-17-2009 11:35 AM

that's okay with me. personally, i'd leave it right where the chickens left it!

   LOL!

k3n 02-18-2009 01:12 AM

butterflywing 02-18-2009 08:15 AM

like i used to tell my kids:

you make the mess, you clean it up.

tell it the chickens. who knows? might work.

k3n 02-18-2009 08:54 AM

Could TRY that I guess but the neighbours already think I'm nuts as every morning I say 'hello, girls!' as i let them out. If I start giving the chooks commands as well, they mght call the funny farm!

K x

butterflywing 02-18-2009 12:03 PM

(i'm using my whisper voice here)

what with cats and dogs and poopy chickens, isn't that already a funny farm?

Mousie 02-18-2009 12:05 PM

...ummm, just a lucky guess. figured you'd be checking out our number sooner or later...might as well beat the neighbors to it, lol!!!

k3n 02-18-2009 12:05 PM
