Orphan QAYG King Sized Crumb Quilt

This quilt sat as an orphan in a box for 5 years. I cut it into a thousand pieces to make a winding ways quilt, but two things were wrong. One, the pattern was too small and hard to sew the tiny curves, and two, the fabric was part of a collection that had no contrast and you could not see the "wheels". I was so disappointed. So I added some contrasting fabrics and made this crumb quilt and added this twisted snowball block. It measures over 120" x 120", quilted in strips on my Sashiko machine, and I then pieced the 6 strips together. It is kind of busy with 4.5" blocks, but better than sitting in a box unloved. My daughter claimed it for her bed. Hope you like it. I'm just glad to get it done, and have a nice home.

A beauty!!

I'd claim it too, if it was offered! Such a nice one. I love the combination of what looks like crazy quilt squares with the snowball block. What a great finish.

I love the twisted snowball block. Did you quilt in rows and then add the backing last? Lucky daughter to have your lovely quilt.

I love the scrappy look of the quilt. Nice Job

QuiltnNan 07-25-2018 02:46 AM

nicely done... interesting that you quilted it on a sashiko machine

Great save. I like the scrappiness of your quilt. I am glad it is finished and claimed by someone who will love it. Better than being left in a box.

I really like the interaction between the crazy quilt squares and the snowball blocks. Very nice! I'd claim it too.

Very nice, better a quilt on a bed than hidden away in a box!

Wow, that's beautiful, Jane quilter! You did a wonderful job. I don't think it's too busy at all. I love it.

I think it is a wonderfully beautiful quilt; I love those crazy little blocks.

Love your quilt and especially love how you put snowball blocks in there. I think it breaks up the crumb blocks and makes it look lovely.

You did a great job in salvaging a problem project. The quilt has an antique look to it. Your daughter knows a treasure when she sees one.

I am not a creative crumb maker. I found some paper-pieced ideas and copied them onto that clear "wash away" film with a black sharpie. Then I paper pieced the crumbs on to the film. Then washed it away. I hate tearing paper off crumb blocks. I am so lazy.

No, I sewed 5 rows together (about 20") by 120". Added batting (22" x 124"), added backing by splitting a 124" of quilting fabric on the fold line to get 2 pieces of backing 22" x 124". Then I sandwiched this section and quilted it on my sashiko machine. I washed and dried each section in my laundry machines. Then sewed each of the 6 sections together.....by sewing the tops together, trimming the batting to match, and handsewing the backing to cover the seam and match the backing. ( a little more complicated than that, but I don't want to bore you with the details). But I did not sew the pieces onto batting or backing. It looked like a regular flimsey, just in strips so I could handle this king sized monster). But thanks for asking......Jane Q
